I ran a one-shot earlier this week just to see how tough it was. Turns out, it's CR was a little overrated. It was brought down by a Beguiler 20/Striped servant 10 (hereafter referred to as Player 1) using some energy substituted [cold]+admixtured [cold] fire seeds spells. It went down something like:
Prologue:
A deity warps the party in from wherever they were, basically says "I'm bored", and then warps them to a beach where the crab is.
Player 1 makes sense motive to get the gist of what's going to happen and has enough wits about him to cast superior invisibility.
Surprise round:
Player 1 makes DC 30 spot check to see crab coming out of waves, so does Player 2.
Player 1 casts several iterations of fire seeds
Crab charges and grabs player 3
Player 2 casts a quickened haste and lands small blow on crab (relative to crab's HP)
Round 1
Player 1 full attacks with fire seeds, missing once, deals something like 573 cold damage. Crab is an ice cube.
