I was paging through this in the gamestore the other day, and was sorely tempted to pick it up. Has anyone here had experience with the system? Would you recommend it? How well does it model the shambling hordes of, say, the original Night of the Living Dead or World War Z? If it turns out to be a good system, I'd be ecstatic - but I couldn't tell how well it would hold up under actual play just by looking at it.

Great, cool system. It models just about any kind of zombies - fast, slow, smart, dumb, infected, voodoo...

Definitely the game for zombie horror and zombie survival horror. Probably great for other kinds of horror too, at that.

I highly recommend this game. It leaves a lot of room for fun roleplaying, and the combat system is relatively realistic too. It is a flexible system that can be great for horror style roleplay or for more combat oriented games. Lots of fun.

Are we talking first or second edition? 2e is much better from what I hear. Me, being the poor fogey I am, only have 1e--still good, though. Very good.

The game is great and by far not limited to Zombies - the Zombie generator in the back of the book can be used for almost any monster, the
game mechanisms are extremely flexible - there are sourcebooks for almost as many genres as gurps and it works well for those. There are source books for western games, kung fu action games, Science Fiction games (works well for scenarios like X-Com or the Aliens Movie) or Fantasy games.
And I would contend that the Dungeon and Zombies splatbook is the better D&D... sometimes.
We use it for Dark Sun and Midnight and the conversion fits impressingly well to these grittier settings.

If you only want the core rule system (without the zobie specific stuff but with a very nice setting on its own, catchangers and a creative magic system, you can always download Witchcraft (http://www.edenstudios.net/witchcraft/WitchcraftCorebook.zip) for free.

Yes, I am a total Eden Games Fanboy.

Witchcraft is a urban fantasy game similar to the WoD: Magus games or the Harry Dreseden line of novels. It is about wizards and witches in the modern world. The game has a very well thought-out magical system and several unique elements such as the Bast, intelligent cats (some of them can shift into humans), the Elder gods out of Lovecraft's fantasy and werewolf biker gangs. It is sometimes like "World of Darkness vs. Call of Cthulluh" in one game. And in one book.

Welcome to the world of CJ Carella's WitchCraft Roleplaying Game. It is a world very like our own but with a much darker side. The monsters and horrors that fill our legends and "fairy tales" walk the earth, hunting and using us for their own purposes. The spirits and vampyres, demons and angels, shapeshifters and things unimagined, all move through our world just as they have since time immemorial. And we have helped them remain hidden for we no longer believe in the unseen.

Long ago our ancestors prayed to their gods for safety and life. They used magic for rituals and charms to bring them luck and to protect them from the creatures of the night. Today technology and science have replaced magic and faith as the tools we use to protect ourselves from the dangers of the world. The horrors of the night still walk, but we no longer believe in them. They are free to do with us as they will.

Of course you don't need to be a supernatural force to create mayhem. Humanity also creates monsters of its own. There has never been a shortage of regular men and women, Mundanes, that are willing to sacrifice their humanity for profit or chaos or power.

But we are not powerless. The dark and evil are not the only unseen forces that remain in our world. The noble and divine exist here as well. There are those among us who have not forgotten that the horrors are real. Some still have the ability to draw upon the Essence of creation to fight back for the side of Order and Light.

These are the men and women that you will play in this game, those chosen by fate or decision to walk the thin line between the darkness and the light. They are known as the Gifted for they have re-discovered the power and ability to fight back using the magic and gods that have never really left us. Some use magic to bend the world to fit their will. Some use the powers of the mind to see and know and do things to carry them through both the small battles and the coming war. Even among the Mundane there are those who have seen the truth and chosen to give themselves to the fight.

There are many different groups of Gifted and Mundane fighting the good fight together. They are known as Covenants. Each has different strengths and weaknesses as well as different beliefs. Some follow the One God. Some strive for a balance with nature. Others view their Gifts as a means to force the world into Order. Often the Covenants do not agree or get along, but they all know that the War needs as many soldiers as it can get. Be they witch or psychic or faithful they all fight on the side of Light.

And those soldiers are badly needed in this time of crisis. The one thing that all the Gifted agree on is that there is a Reckoning coming. The cycle of the ages is coming to a climax and the Gifted may be the only thing standing between our world and its destruction. Those on the side of Darkness know this as well. Some are hastening its coming. Some are trying to carve out as large piece of the world as they can before it arrives. Others have reasons and agendas beyond our ability to comprehend.

Welcome to the world of WitchCraft. It is not an easy or entirely pleasant world to live in, much like our own. The fight against the forces of Darkness is a noble one, however. With luck and perseverance your characters may be the ones to tip the balance and help to save the future of our world.

Witchcraft can be found here (http://www.edenstudios.net/witchcraft/index.html).

There is also a spin-off game, Armaggedo, which is more focused on the war in the open instead of the more conspiracy focused witchcraft. Where you can play an alliance of the Avatar of Thor, a powerful witch and an Angel, that fights against tanks with his flaming sword. And wins, most of the time.

Yes. Absolutely no problem. In the All Flesh Must Be Eaten Core Book is a whole scenario about a zombie epidemic in the Dark Ages.
I wrote a conversion of Dark Sun and Midnight, both D&D games (even though of the more grittier kind) and I think that the Unisystem (the name of the overall core system of all these games) suits better for it than the original rules.
The rules are very flexible and easy to adjust to many settings and ages.

Wow, i've always loved that sort of stuff, do you have a link to those conversions by the by? that sounds really cool and i think i have an idea for my next game

Wow, both of those games sounds pretty interesting. I think my GF would go crazy for the Witchcraft one, too.

Any chance they stock AFMBE at Hobbytown?

The amount of settings AFMBE will work for is ridiculous. Playing Night of the Living Dead or 28 Days Later or Resident Evil is trivially easy. The "scenario book" (more like campaign idea book) includes stuff like WWI zombie plane pilots (the Red Baron is a zombie!), Zombie-Richelieu taking over Paris, The 49 Gaki (zombies in feudal Japan), and much, much more.

If I remember right, they even have a scenario in which zombified Greys land in flying saucers. They really go all out.

Calinero
2008-10-17, 11:18 PM
Yeah, you name it they got it in AFMBE. And the mechanics are so flexible that you can pretty much make any scenario you want. My friends have run campaigns that are all about being awesome and killing things, and then run campaigns that scare you to death. You can run pretty much any setting you want to, as well.

Eden Studios is indeed awesome. I gamed at the shop where they're based (before I moved) and yet... I didn't play a single Unisystem game there! I regret this now.

I ran a Buffy game here, but it died out before we dealt with the mini-BBEG. Playing an AFMBE game over on rpol.net at the moment. Rather like it.
