Players are by admission only. Starting characters are Hands, Fang, Twitch, Skull, Gem, Eyes and Box Top.

Cold. So cold. Cold is nothing new to a dvergr but this place is cold as Skera’s breath. The Chooser of the Slain has been busy the past hours; you are militia, the last desperate survivors of a broken company. The Rada have come and laid waste to this city, your home, and though it’s the dying days of the Great War your lords back home have not yet admitted defeat. It goes on, and the death stalks you in the long twilight of pre-dawn.

Your breath mists and snow falls weakly upon you. Artillery lights the sky, it’s blasts sending long shudders through the earth. Rifle cracks and the chatter of machine guns echo along the many roads. Jordavic is barely a city anymore; it’s a ruined place of battered buildings, smouldering wrecks and hungry dogs. What’s left of your battalion is south along the river, through these old apartments and forgotten slums. The road’s but 20 yards across, abandoned wagon and bullet holed car the only things in it save yourselves, rubbish and a large crater in the road’s middle to your south. Shabby buildings, gapless and gaping lie empty to either side.

Then you hear it. The rumble. That horrid rumble, a diesel engine. You’ve learned to dread the sound – the war engine, the metal bull, the monster of men's making. A Rada tank is coming from the north, bastard daughter of human minds, it will pull onto your street soon. If it gets past you your battalion will be struck by it in the side and it is your job to hold this road… even as you hear it, still a kilometre or more distant, you know you must stop it!

Welcome to Warglory. This is a background mission for rules familiarization by learning the hard way. You face a female heavy tank similar to the British designs of WW1 and a handful of infantry, and must try to stop it with very crude resources.

All characters have a uniform, shoes, a 5 shot bolt-action rifle, some rations and bayonets. Between you there is also a jerry can of fuel, a roll of bandages, a hungry dog, two bottles and some wood. You are in the street described above.

Roll a D6 to see what else you have.

Twitch had been sitting on the ground, gently rocking forward and backward as he tried to keep warm and keep from thinking about the terrors of the last few days. But at the sound of the distant engine he springs to his feet in a heartbeat. "Is that... a Tank!" he says with a flash of passion. "We gotta get off the street!" Twitch stumbles towards the least run down of the nearby buildings before realizing how apparent their resting spot would be. "Gotta get this stuff off the street!" Grabbing the wood he starts dragging it out of sight.

Twitch has a mortar's barrel & bipod. If he's really, really lucky someone else has the rest. (another player rolling a 6 required.) I'll assume the wood is off street. The rest is up to you.

Fang stood silently and nearly motionless and the side of the road, looking down the road when he hears the tank, his head snapping into the direction the noise is coming from. Quickly he helps Twitch get all the stuff from the road, most likely into a hiding place in one of the apartment building alongside the road. Carrying the jerry can he says "Come here." in his deep, gravelly voice to the dog to also get it into a hiding place.

Stopping there for one moment, he looks at the road and all the things they have there. "Gotta stop that thing or the battalion will in quite a pinch. We need a plan. Maybe we could use the jerry can as a makeshift explosive in the crater there when the tank passes through it to destroy its tracks to catch it in an awkward position for its guns. If we make some Molotov cocktails we can scatter and maybe incapacitate some of them for a short time and ignite the jerry can. Then we could catch them by surprise by attacking them from both sides at once. But all of this would have to happen nearly simultaneously to surprise them and maybe we can get on top of that tank somehow and throw another cocktail in there." Fang says this in a very high speed, his ideas heavily influenced by the war tales of his tribe and resourcefulness with what little they have. Despite his calm demeanor, he doesn't want to lose any time and there is also uncertainty in his voice. "Additional ideas?"

Hands awoke suddenly from his slumber. He had been trying to get some shut eye for the past few hours, now it looked like he'd see some action before that was allowed to happen. Grabbing his rifle he made his way to the roof of one of the nearby buildings, to get a better view of the surrounding area. "Oh boy..." He said as he noticed a Rada tank and infantry heading his way. Hands looked across the street in the hopes of seeing his squad mates. He noticed Twitch and Fang talking, but couldn't make out the words. He also noticed the street was fairly clear of debris. 'Oh well.' He thought. 'I'll just follow their lead.'

Knowing tricks

I have no qualms with your characters knowing some anti-tank tactics. The war's been going on for years; you've likely heard things from old soldiers, the cripples from the front, the news and so on. Not to mention desperation's the mother of invention.

Just remember. It's a first world war tank. It has the same limitations, some of which you'll be aware of and others become more obvious when you get a look at it.

Hands and Fang both have entrenching tools. Hand shovels are good for digging and make serviceable melee weapons in a pinch.

Blockhead
2008-10-23, 07:46 AM
Hands thought about digging a trench to either provide ground cover, or cause driving hassle for the tank. But then realised that even with Fang as an extra shovel, the pair would make no more than a large hole in the time it would take the tank, provided it continued on the same course with the same speed, to get here. Hands decided to wait on the roof. He tried to signal Fang and Twitch by waving to let them know he was there, but he did it carefully so as not to attract attention from unwanted guests.

"We can't expect them to sit there while we take potshots, Fang." Twitch gave his own negative assesment as he discretely peered down the street. "Soon as we open fire they're gonna start blowing the buildings to hell. We gotta hit 'em and run. Take down their infantry and the tank'll stop. Maybe we can hit 'em from above..." Twitch looked around to see if his building had a functioning staircase.

[OOC: Because of being described as a female tank in the opening post, I'll assume we know the tank most likely doesn't have explosive rounds as it's female.]

"No one said that we have to make a final stand here Twitch, but the plan is still viable. If we take them by surprise, they will need a few seconds to react to the situation, seconds we can use to weaken their forces and their morale and maybe cripple the tank. After that we can always retreat into the city, regroup and use hit and run tactics. So, explosives and fire or not?" Aware that there isn't much time he gestures towards Hands to come down to the ground level and looks for a good position in the second or third floor for the ambush, so that he can reach the first floor fast and retreat into the city through the back door.

"We could use small parts of the bandages. We better use that before we start salvaging our clothes in this kind of weather. Should do it for the can and the two bottles. Alternatively, we could dig a hole in the crater, put the can in it, disguise it and ignite it with a cocktail to maybe take out the tracks, after we move the wreck and wagon to the sides of the road so the crater is the easiest way for the tank. Higher risk, maybe higher pay-off, who knows. Should we send the dog into the ensuing chaos or wait until we go for hit-and-run?" Fangs goes to get the bandages and brings them to Twitch.

[OOC: Where's everyone else? I don't mind being in a squad of 3 but about 6, 7 of us signed up?]

Hands saw the gesture made by Fang, but mouthed to him: 'I have a plan!' And remained on the roof, out of sight of the road and the tank which was getting closer with every passing second. He took off his backpack and put it down against the low wall, but left the safety on, on his rifle, not wanting it to go off now and give away his position.

[OOC: Really hope we get into combat soon, I have a plan! Sort of...]

Hands was restless, the tank was taking an eternity to make it's way down the street. Maybe it wasn't even heading this way... No, best to keep down for now. Hands began fumbling with a hankerchief he produced from a pocket. It was ripped and stained a variety of colours, but Hands used it more of a 'play-thing' than what it was supposed to be used for.

It's worth mentioning that at this stage, nobody has a light.

Due to the uses you have in store for it, i'm rolling a D2 to see whether the jerry can has diesel (1) or petrol (2). [roll0]

Twitch couldn't exactly make out Hand's intent but figured he had a plan and flashed the thumbs up at him. Then he thrust a bottle into Fang's hand. "Let's fill these up. It's probably best not to use up all the fuel anyway. We might be needing it later."

Fangs runs to the top with the bandages and the bottles, rifle slung over the shoulder. He tries to carry some pieces of wood in his free hand. "Guys, we need to warm the diesel somehow or else it will take some time to ignite with an open flame."

At the top Fangs says to Hands, "Maybe we can make a fire the old-fashioned way with this." He points at the wood. "What is your plan?" he asks while keeping low.

Hands smiled weakly, it was suicidal, but it just might work.

One of the buildings to your south was leveled by artillery days ago. The building opposite is riddled with bullets. This is some 100 meters south of your start position; the street meets a main road 100 meters north of your start position, which is the direction the sound of diesel engine is comming from. Still no sign of it or the infantry.

You only know it's female because of recent scouting by other units. You know it will have infantry because tanks always have infantry around here.

Pausing, Skull revalutes his battle plan. Neurons sparking, he grabs the pile of rags he was sleeping in, and moves them off to the side, and with one last glance at the sound of the oncoming, tank hides hmself in them, his rifle in one hand, and the grenade in the other.

Eyes

Eyes peers down the road to the north from behind a burned out car. Upon hearing the tank, he glances around towards the others, then back up the road. "Hands, I'm back in a minute." With that, Fang runs down to the street level and over the street to the others.

"Maybe we can improvise a small fire, but only if a small miracle happens, so we better not count on the improvised stuff, but if we manage we can chuck some stuff down there. I'm going to provide cover fire together with Hands from the upper floors on the other side of the street, someone could to the same from this side. I suggest that those in the upper floors open fire, you release the dog after that and hit them from the ground level with what you got. Apart from trying to take cover or keeping close to the tank to avoid its machine guns we could cover Skull so that he can throw the grenade in there and Eyes so he can give 'em hell with his K rounds. Start signal would be when everyone on the upper floors starts shooting or if something blows up. If the latter doesn't happen, the explosives are out. If someone has a better plan, great, if not, we should get on our positions now. I'm going to tell what's up to Hands."

If the others decide what to do, Fang will run over the road and up to Hands' position and tell him what's up and get in position.

Looking in the sensible place, you enter a house and walk to the gas stove. Sure enough there's a box of matches.

Labour time

The enemy is getting closer. You have until tommorow (real time) to prepare yourselves. You don't really know how far away the tank is. I will need confirmation on where each of you is placed by tonight, baring in mind that unless someone grabs or shoots the dog it is still running about doing it's own thing.

Mr.Bookworm
2008-10-24, 03:45 PM
Gem ran back to the wall, tightly clutching the box of matches. He proudly displayed the matches, and said "Look what I found!"

((How many matches? Also, how low are we on rations? I mean, the dog must be for something. >>

Also, maybe we should make an OOC thread for this?))

Shirocco
2008-10-24, 04:18 PM
Put OOC in spoilers if you have a lot to say, especially if it's directed at myself or a handful of others.

You have half a box of matches, should be plenty. Your rations include bully beef and someone might have a sausage, along with less appealing stuff where a dog's concerned.

Hands

OOC: If Ridai/Fangs doesn't come back online before tommorow, can we assume that he's come back into the building and told me what's going on? I'm on the second floor of a building opposite Twitch, Eyes and the rest of the squad. Fangs will likely take a position in the same building as I, but in a different location, probably a floor down.

Hands patiently waited for the impending doom to reach his position.

Eyes

Eyes glances over at Hands, then back at the others. "You guys needs to head over to the other side of the road. That way, when you open fire, the enemy will look over there. That'll give me and Skull a chance to take out the tank. And we need to figure something out about that gas. Maybe bury it in the road and use the bandages as a fuse?"

Ridai

Fangs

"Forget about digging, we don't have the time anymore. I'll get the diesel down here, figure out something with it, I'll get into position. And grab the damn dog!" Fangs runs back over the road, gets the gas, goes back to the others, leaves it there ("Good luck, guys.") and runs back up on Hands' side.

"Okay Hands, we two will open fire from up here at the infantry when the tank passes by. This will distract them and they will concentrate on us, so that the others can ambush them from the ground level. Eyes will use his K rounds, Skull his grenade. Whatever happens, we should keep shooting the infantry and only leave when the others retreat. Maybe we can get through this whole mess. We'll gonna mess 'em up good." Fangs goes into position a floor above Hands (as he apparently is one level above ground level), tests where he can lie his rifle upon for added precision and has a good view of the street and hides afterwards, so that he can't be seen from the ground level.

OOC: The times at which most people are active are kind of awkward for me because that time is around or after midnight here in Germany, so it may happen that I miss some of the "go time" the moment it happens. :smallconfused:

If the tank passes by when I'm not online Fangs will coordinate with Hands when to attack. He'll carefully aim and brace the rifle on a window sill and keep shooting at infantry, most likely those nearest to Skull or Eyes.

Hands made an 'OK' sign with his hand and released the safety on his rifle. He doubted he'd live through the next couple of minutes, but it was a solid plan and if he gave his life for the destruction of a tank, so be it.

I'll also brace my rifle against the window frame, since the road is 20 yards across we'll be firing almost at point blank range. Also, how much ammo we got? Also I'm from merry old England, so me and Ridai are in the same boat.

"Can't use the fuel, Eyes. Stuff diesel and heating it would be too much smoke." Twitch curtly informed Eyes of his skepticism without turning to face him. His attention was directed towards the dog, which he was waving a morsel of sausage towards in a bid for the creatures attention. "Come on boy." He gently called before whistling.

Whether he could attract the dog or not, Twitch would take position by a window or other gap in the wall a few feet way from Eyes. His finger rested lightly on the safety, keeping it off until right before he opened fire, not wanting to give anything a chance to go wrong.

Snow sprinkles down like rain in slow motion, the air bites and cold works itself in through your uniforms, skin and flesh to chill the bones. So cold. The engine sound is getting louder, memories of shell-shocked fathers, uncles and brothers come home from the front flash past in your mind... their silence, reluctance to speak of the war. The damning voice on the radio at the use of new and terrible machines, gasses that melt the lungs and pox the skin and murderous snipers that stalk the noman's land hunting the unwary.

You're brought back to reality by movement... something up the street, 100 meters... Rada. One, two... four of them cross the north end of the street, looking down it. One has binoculars.

((The tank's not here yet. Just infantry.))

The fellow with the binocs looks at the car... he shouts alarm in Rada tongue, Gem has been spotted! The four Rada hit the deck and raise guns. Gem can fire on them but they're suddenly small targets, roll two D6 dice to fire.

Skull can get out from under the dashboard and do the same if he props the gun - such as through the window or something. Or do something else. The Rada are well outside grenade range. Those in the east and west apartments can either remain in cover or lean out windows to fire, it becomes a pair of D8 dice for them if they do.

((5/7 have posted, dragging remainder.))

Twitch cannot move parallel via buildings because they are not linked, just build against each other. Side alleys would amount to another street.

The Rada rifles flash. Gem feels a bullet punch his belly before he hears the report - it went straight through the car, him, and out the other side! Pain lances through and doubles him over. Fang's shot has similar results on one of the Rada, pounding into a shoulder. The rest of the first volley are high, wide or fall short. Gem might be stunned by the hit but others frantically work bolts while the Rada do the same with well-drilled ease. They fire again... Gem is struck twice in the chest and conciousness is overrun with pain, he blacks out bleeding heavily. Another good shot from Fang snaps a Rada straight through the torso, killing him, while Eyes and Box-top both kill one - pity it's the same one.

The Rada infantry up and run, both heading right & back into the main street - one is obviously flagging after being shot by Fangs. They're upright but moving targets. Gem's Out of Action but Skull can fire, D10. Those in the window have a D12.

The Fallen

Out of Action means you're down until combat has ended, you can be revived after.

Critically Wounded means you're out for the mission. If untreated you will die. If treated your character survives (technically) to join in the next mission.

Dead characters cannot be revived; if they're not dead already they will be in a turn or two and may take no actions. Roll new character.

There is a throaty diesel growl and a squeel of metal from the north, something's happening. Rada come running into view again, one after another... two, four, seven... and then you see it. It takes a few seconds as it emerges into view. Big and metal and noisey, menacing and slow, the tank crawls into view from the main road. Metal screeches as it slowly brings itself around the corner to enter the street and the Rada infantry run forward jumping over picket and low stone fences to get ahead of the tank and check buildings.

You can fire on the infantry easily enough. D12 for the ones running in the street, no shot on the ones hopping over low stone walls to the right for those on ground floor (D12 if you're on a higher floor), D20 against running over and past picket fences on the left for those still on the east side of the street. Shooting is never compulsory; you can watch, hide or take other actions.

Bayonets

Bayonets are great. They count as decent melee weapons and cancel out an opponent's bonus for charging in melee. Best of all you can go from shooting, to melee, to shooting again with no mucking around.

They have two problems though. One is you can't shoot as straight with them on at targets >100m away, the other is they don't work well in confined spaces. If you get tackled and are wrestling on the ground don't expect much help from your bayonet - unless you detach it and use it like a longknife.

Bayonets are assumed to be off. If you plan to use one, Fix Bayonet takes one turn.

Something is shouted, the left group (3 rada) hop over a picket fence to advance south toward you while the right (4 rada) hold up and cover behind a low stone wall.

Left group in moving toward you hardly count as moving. From the 2nd floor they're a D8. From the ground floor they are obscured by all the picket fences between apartment yards & the odd bush or tree, making a D10. All apartments have 10m of front yard facing the street. There is picket fence before the road with most of these, right up the end there's one that has stone wall instead about 1m high. Yards are mostly dirt & dead grass, a handful of scraggly trees and feeble bushes are on this street.

Skull thinks for a bit, then comes up with a plan; His squad can pick them off if there is a divesion. Blowing up a tank=Diversion.

So setting off, he picks his way through the street, staying as low as possible and moving only when the Rada disappear inside to check a building.

Shirocco
2008-10-28, 09:37 PM
A moment after Skull creeps out the door a tank sponson HMG opens fire. Turns out the gunner was watching the building; not a surprise, considering the fire you put the scouts under earlier. It can't however see through picket fences - to the tank he is concealed. Heavy MG rounds wash past, obliterating fence posts, chewing up earth and cracking into the building. Skull is under fire; he may be in concealment now but not for long. The HMG will blow every fencepost between him and it apart within seconds.

At the same time it's forward hull MG opens fire on the car, sending clouds of big man-chewing rounds smashing through it's battered frame. The vehicle shudders and shakes, loose bits falling off, big holes blowing open. The tank's remaining sponson remains silent.

One group of Rada are always outside. Which group is the only thing that changes - it is now impossible to cross the street unseen.

*If you're not doing anything, say so as Maniac has done and mention character name. I will give Frigs a few hours to decide what he's doing with Skull.

Skull makes it to a crouch, shots flying very close, but gets not two steps from there before great big bullets tear into his leg, shatter his head, blast through his back and leave massive exit wounds in his torso. The impact of high speed air behind the bullets is what turns his organs to jelly; he's dead before he hits the ground.

The tank maintains fire for a few more seconds, then ceases. You hear Rada shouting something. The left group exit the house they just checked, all look at the West apartment that Skull just emerged from. You recognise a shouted word "Surrender!" in the local tongue from the Rada.

Fangs peaks out of the window to see what the situation is.

"We should send someone to warn the battalion. We lost the element of surprise and could only take a few of them down. With a half dozen soldiers and the tank fully aware, we can only try to take down as many as we can and maybe make a mad dash for the tank with the K rounds. But it will be a suicide mission for sure." Fangs whispers. "Twitch, go warn the battalion."

Other than that, Fangs waits.

Fangs sees the tank is now 30 yards out and parked. It's pretty damn close. The Rada troops are even closer they're in the next apartment's yard, D4 shots at this range... but you notice something in time to save your life. The tank has a sponson pointed right at you! You pull back like a whipcrack and heavy bullets thunder into the wall & window where you'd been.

((Nice save. Reflex, you got 20. Tank didn't.))

The dog, naturally, has been getting anxious with all the gunfire and this is the last straw. It bolts out the back door.

The Rada's first reaction is to look surprised. Not an effective responce. Your shots aren't too accurate but you near scare them to death in any case. While you fire, Box-top starts his match. He'll throw the improvised grenade next turn.

The Rada recover from their surprise and raise guns to return fire. The tank doesn't even take that long, with a great rattle of HMG fire it opens up on the windows but lacks the angle to kill you. You may keep firing (if you have any ammo left) or duck.

Bayonets are versatile things in this day and age. Detached they make good longknives, as handy on your feet as they are in a grapple. While you do that... there's a resounding thump outside as the improvised grenade goes off. Rada swear and curse, the tank opens fire with both sponsons (one on each building) and you hear it throttle up as it starts to move.

((Ok. I'm not sure what the idea with the blunt implement was but far as i can tell, you aren't going to kill the tank. More to the point the main game's moving onto it's next mission. Finishing up now.))

Slowly the tank creeps backwards up the street. Repeated attempts to breech it's armour with K rounds prove futile - most of them bounce off, the one that penetrated achieved nothing and with two left the gun fails. A K round broke the firing pin, leaving it jammed and useless. However, while the tank crawls away and one of it's escort infantry also escapes there are two key things that you realise. One - you held your ground, stopped the tank and forced it's retreat. Two - you have survived. Mission succesful!

Skull is buried where he fell. Though he died foolishly, there are none who doubt his courage.

Gem is critically injured. Though his fellows do eventually return and bandage him he falls prey to infection and dies three days later.

Hands, Twitch, Eyes and Box-top are all there when Battallion sends a platoon of tank hunters out guided by Fangs expecting a pile of bodies. They're surprised to find you. The concensus is you were tenacious but lucky; your defence action was very sloppy but better than they expected because when things were grim you stuck at it and refused to give up. You're taken back to battalion and given a hot meal.

Ipphli, mainiac, Blockhead, and Ridai - I'm offering you guys a chance to play in Warglory. PainintheEar, Frigs and Mr. Bookworm - thanks for playing.

Those taking it on can expand their Trial characters or roll new ones as follows. There is room for one radioman if someone is game to try the job; everyone else will be riflemen. If someone has a good background story to support it i'll allow a machine gunner as well. While radiomen can call in artillery strikes that leave the ground shaking for minutes afterwards, and machine gunners can lay swathes of fire that turn troop clusters into dogmeant, taking either class means taking a green character with no experience. Those taking riflemen get a hardy survivor with the seasoning of experience and the equipment to show for it.

Character Creation

Character creation is already part done if you're keeping the Trial by Fire character - though you can change his nickname if you want. Alternately you can roll a new one. Experience and kit options will be posted tommorow in the main thread, which i will link shortly.

Pick a name, then a nickname (typically something everyone else lumped him with when he did something stuipid like Slip, Wax or Stinky).
Comming up with a loose background is recommended but optional. I don't need a novel, it's as much as you feel like writing. Those keeping their characters have part of this pre-determined, as you fought in and survived the Great War.

For skills I borrow from D&D. You have 40 skill points, no more than 10 in any one thing. Hide and move silent are bundled together as the Stealth skill while spot, listen and search are all under the Awareness skill. It costs 5 skill points to learn extra languages, radiomen get a bonus language for free.

Kit options are discussed in recruitment threads. The most flexible characters are the riflemen. All characters receive upgrades if they survive a mission, the options are determined by the character you chose and sometimes by how it was played.

Playable Races

For race i suggest just rolling a dvergr of the Nagaard people, as this is a Nagaard mercenary army. Other options are below, including dvergr of other tribes and even humans for the brave player.

Of Men

There are many human nations, as men are now the most wide spread race across the known worlds. They are too short lived to learn their own magic but are quick learners, so work through ritual and bargains to cast the spells of others. Perhaps because they do not fear them, all other races are prepared to speak with at least some men. The following are involved directly or indirectly in this war.

Because men are viewed as weak among dvergr any who make the grade to join their mercenary armies (apart from being men of rare quality to begin with) are treated harshly and trained very hard. Truth is everyone gets that, but when men survive it they come out particularly hardened.

Human characters gain +4 in melee and have breastplates. They run much faster than dvergr and their long arms give +2 on throwing weapons.

Nacarfi: The battle is taking place in one of their colonies. Nacarfi are a people of a border state between the more temperate north and arid south in the core human world; they have a long history of mixing with all human nations and an eclectic culture results. They are deceptively wide spread, with colonies on many worlds - though not originally by their choice, as they were regularly taken as slaves in times past. Most of the colonies became independant years ago, but some of the home land still find themselves far abroad, where their love of dance, music and spices can make them easy friends. They are sometimes viewed as thieves, especially by their Houten neighbours.

Strevoy: Men of a more northern climb, the Strevoy were for the longest time planesmen. Long called Svaad by the dvergr, they were united less than two centuries ago into a vast empire are in the throws of revolution all across their vast and diverse land. They can be fatalistic people but are hardy survivors, the northern end of their lands forever buried in snow. Strevoy are more wary of the fae than most men for they have great trouble with them in their home land. Most fear fairies, some bargain with them. They have an uneasy truce with the fae because of their ancient fear that without them the world roots - the ways between worlds - would close up, and the Strevoy homeland has several of the manworld's majoy roots in it's borders. With revolution rocking their empire, many have fled as refugees to the far colonies and into other nations. For the time being, mercenaries make good money with the Strevoy.

Houten: A small mountain-locked homeland belies the great trade empire that are (or was) the Houten. They are politically a strange animal, having an elected leadership with three heads. Religiously open minded and militarily a bit dislocated, the Houten lost much in the Great War of ten years ago. They now hold a core of high value worlds and seek an ally with Strevoy to reclaim what they lost, and have ended up embroiled in it's civil war. There is talk of conflict within the Houten's own ranks, and it would hardly be their first revolution if it proves true. A faction arises there that calls for strong leadership behind one man, but it is largely unknown beyond the Houten's own borders. In peace they are a highly individual people, considering identity important and bickering over petty things, but are likeable and rich in personality.

Of Dvergr

Dvergr dwell in the world of Harthglome; a barren globe of air and cyclone with walls and sky of rock. It is a harsh place of bitter cold, all weather turning on a point in the centre that glows brilliantly after the Great Storm's climax when the wind stops and blizzards settle, letting a brief thaw before dimming and starting the slow build to crescendo again.

Dvergr, like most life in Harthglome, dwell for the most part below ground. They farm and hunt and survive often with no direct contact with their world's attempt at a sun. They are a grim people, aggressive and stubborn. It's no surprise to anyone who has seen Harthglome that dvergr range so far from it through the world roots. As a people, they are known for three things: Craft, war, and will to live. Dvergr are tougher than 10 men, strong as four, and born to the magic of illusion. Most dvergr start developing a skill for it by their first century, and by old age can be exceedingly powerful in this art. Sunlight utterly ruins illusion magic and wracks dvergr with pain, slowly turning their skin to dust and eventually they become stone. They are as near to blind daylight as men are at night, but have flawless (and near colourless) night sight.

All dvergr troops get +2 melee from intensive training, prior experience or great personal drive. This stacks with the following.

Nagaard melee +6 at night, no magic. No penalty in day.

Others melee +6 at night, illusion magic. Melee +1 in day, -1 shot die, -2 skills, shoot up to Mid range.

Djupr melee +6 at night, full magic. Melee -4 in day, bargained magic only, -5 skills, -3 shot die, shoot up to Short range

Nagaard: Nagaarn is the dvergr war-god, a merciless deity who accepts no compromise. The Nagaard are his people. In ancient times they were exiled to the surface and suffered terribly with each passing of the year, when the world was bathed in light. This changed them. They gained day sight, lost their fear of the light and became the hardiest survivors of the dvergr. The light exposure has stunted their magic, Nagaard have a weak grip on illusion by old age if they're lucky. Even today their society is nomadic, with few holdfasts populated year round. Their place on the surface and inevitable poverty made them mercenaries, able to deny passage of other tribes across the surface. Their eventual sun tolerance made spreading across other worlds easy, made them ideal as fighters to beat or hold opponents in the day so their fellows of other tribes could end it in the night.

If there's one thing Nagaard know, it is how to fight! They have been involved in every war brought upon the dvergr and most of the ones they started. This is a Nagaard mercenary army, and though they use archaic weapons and outdated machines they fight with a ferocity that can give pause to trolls... and love it every step of the way.

Bjartr: Dvergr of the hammer-crafts. Dvergr have a reputation as the finest craftsmen across all the worlds; amoung them, Bjartr are the great. They call the central mountains home, have strong trade and military ties with all the others, have colonies off world that never fell in the Rise of Men and are the leading political force of Harthglome. Their money buys the power of the others, the craft puts the tools in their hands, and their wisdom provides the leaders they need. They are philosopher warriors at heart and have been ruled for more than a two thousand years by the one titled Sindri in his golden hall.

Bjartr craft is highly prised. The finest weapons and armour come from their factories and their workshops. The best of all are made in Song Hall, an ancient place of smith-monks where things of legend are made to the song of hammer blows. You will find few of them in this mercenary army, but while most of them are clever and generous enough to make friends a few seem to forever be the butt of jokes amoung Nagaard.

Djupr: Bjartr philosophy is for the most part common sense; the Djupr, or "Deep" people have a different view on things. They dwell furthest from the surface of any Dvergr tribe, far down in the deep rock where a world root forms in their oldest city. They have less sun tolerance than most dvergr but are extremely sensitive to magic; a Djupr can expect to develop the Canny, their illusion skill, by their first half-century. Religiously they are occult; secretive and hidden, they study the magics of other races. Djupr are said to bargain with trolls, forbidden by the Bjartr since ancient times, but they deny such things and discredit accusers. They make their money through trade in the rare gems and ores that turn up in their deep mines, along with other wonders that defy explanation.

Djupr are hired as specialists in this mercenary army. There are very few of them. They must forever walk about completely covered up for fear of the sun, and on this world they curse the brightness of moons at night. Not even a cellar or inside a building are they free of this effect.

Rada: Known as the set, Rada were once many tribes but now are a nation. They work with other dvergr in many colonies off world, but the spiritual heart of their people remains in Harthglome. Their homelands are the western end of the great sphere, where ore is still rich despite millenia of mining. The Rada are slow to anger for dvergr, and highly organised. They are accused by others of making procedures for everything but nobody calls them unreligious; they are the people of Starfa, god of trades and cunning. When poverty strikes and all are hungry, Rada eat well and pretend they have not.

The Rada have a natural distrust of men, especially Nacarfi, and they hate fae more than most because they understand them not at all.

Fjarri: Dwelling far from the other dvergr of Harthglome and in colonies elsewhere, the Fjarri are as much benefactors as they are victims of geography. A lot of Harthglome's water runs through their tunnel-maze in the Thaw and it affords them an abundance of life rich underground lakes and the Hverth-Blatr sea. They have more food than most and it allows the Fjarri to be many. There are three tribes within their people who still bicker to this day, but are ruled by a fragile council of elders. The Fjarri are not technically a soverign state but they are hard to control, so pay a light tithe and apart from occasional assertion of Bjartr authority they largely keep to themselves. Fjarri place great importance on etiquette and good manners, as it's the only way to keep blood feuds breaking out at a moment's notice.

As unruly and unstable as the Fjarri territories are, Fjarri themselves appear polite and well mannered; however they love a good fight and a good meal even more.

Lastly, traits. These are intended to reflect character personality in game rules by applying bonuses and penaulties in equal measure. I suggest only one, you can take more if you're game or none if you arn't.

Killer’s eyes (+2 for melee attempts. Must always attempt to melee if enemy is within 5 meters)

Purposeful (Always does Steady shooting, but shot die is reduced by 2 rather than 1)

Victim of Bureaucracy (He’s from the artillery. Sure enough he doesn’t hear too well (-5 awareness, trouble hearing orders) but knows his way around mortars, field guns, and other heavy weapons (+10 on checks related to their use) and has a better than average grasp of angles (+2 on grenade throwing)

Wealthy background (starts game with an equipment upgrade, but everyone keeps stealing from him and playing pranks. Whenever he reloads or trys to throw a grenade, roll a D6 – on a 1 the grenade or magazine is missing, empty or a dud. Try again next round.)

Second hander (Your weapon is a hand-me-down and probably older than you are. +5 bonus on repair & maintenance due to loose and worn components, but -5 on weapon failure rolls for the same reason.)

Alcoholic (Even for dvergr you drink heavily, slipping spirits in your water canteen and bottles in your bergen. All skills and saves suffer a -2 penalty except stealth. Near constant disciplinary action from one officer or another means you find things in the APC in half the time (you packed it), your weapon is excessively maintained (+5 on misfire rolls). You’ve also become very shifty (+2 on stealth checks) and rather good at getting things you weren’t meant to have (+4 on scrounging).

Superstitious (follows superstitions by carrying charms and other odd behaviour, giving +2 on all saving throws. Is also obsessive/compulsive, making him a time waster – most actions take %50 longer. Will check suspends for one turn or action.)

Magic

There are three common powers dvergr develop around their first century of life. Whether it's determined by your ancestors, by parenting or by luck is a timeless debate with no clear answer but you only manifest one of them. Roll a D3 - a 1 gives Unseen, 2 gives Presence, 3 gives Fear. Djupr players should PM me for more options.

Unseen: When you don't want to be noticed you blend in. Like one of the crowd or a rock by a stream eyes just glance over you without really taking notice. To use this ability you must zone yourself out, totally emptying your mind of thought. In this state you can take only simple actions, to maintain this state in combat is a D20 15+ every turn. You must be out of combat for at least a minute to enter it again.

So long as it lasts focusing on you takes an act of will (D20) and stealth gains +10 with a reroll. Enemies who fail it just can't focus on you and can't attack you directly, their eyes slide off and other things occupy their minds. The more you do that would normally attract attention, the easier you make the D20 check for the enemy to be aware of you. Once your illusion is beaten the same enemy becomes immune to it for rest of the night.

Presence: You can affect how others perceive you. Like a scale you can affect how threatening you seem, appearing anywhere from terrifying to helplessly vulnerable with no physical difference in your appearance - it is as intangible as an aura, a power that lies to the brain. To use it you enter the mindset of something your target expects to find and play upon it, be that a foe of terror they cannot hope to defeat or a last survivor praying for your life. Those who see you have a D20 check to ignor this effect or fall victim to it and it only works at short range (<100 meters). A terrifying perception can break enemies in close combat very fast, while a vulnerable one can bait them into traps or holding longer in battle than they should.

When active you are a hard one not to notice, a -4 penaulty applies on stealth. The more far removed you make your Presence to what the target expects the more likely they are to see through it - to terrify a squad of draftees faltering in a melee is easy compared with frightening those same men after they've gunned down several of your squadmates and are standing strong behind cover.

Fear: You can influence the 6th sense of other people. That prickling of the neck, the eyes watching that are felt but unseen, the last second's reflex when someone approaches from behind. You can use this power at up to long range (<500 meters) and while the target may ignor the feeling (D20) if they heed it you can make them look away, pause, or hesitate.

While it is usually too dull for confusing opponents in battle, in close combat you can attempt to use this power to distract the opponent at a lethally inopportune time (automatically beat opponent if they fail check), but if the power fails utterly (opponent natural 20) the positions are reversed and you are defeated.

*Footnote: These are quite experimental. The magic system in Warglory is brand new so i'll likely be play balancing this as we move along.

I was going for the crazy idea of rushing the tank, bashing the gun barrels until they stopped working, then storming the cabin at gunpoint. Crazy idea and I guess Twitch's nerve just failed and he let it pass.

Twitch is gonna stay on as a rifleman with 10 points in stealth and awareness and 5 in survival, heal, handle animal and craft. No traits.
