Preamble

A doctor whom had met Shirou in the past sent the relatively old ninja a letter to come to the Shukketsu Iroi Temple for a bit of information and to do a favor for an old friend.

Shukketsu Iroi Temple

A large, rectangular and very traditional temple stands atop a hill with a small blue stream trickling down to a serene green valley below. The temple--ironically dubbed the Bleeding Hearth--existed as a small and low cost hospital for a little village just a half mile northwest. A dark dirt road lays at the feet of our protagonists leading up to the great red gates of the temple. The sun was slowing rising on the first day of their true adventure, their desire to begin their collective and personal wars against the shinobi world.

A pair of dark-robed monks stand guard armed only with quarterstaves and prayer beads. The two guards quietly watch the eight shinobi heading up the temple road, and opt not to question or stop their advance into the temple. A paltry few monks move about inside the temple, walking between the temple proper and a small off-building marked with a large red plus sign. Shirou can surmise that his doctor companion would be inside, or in the temple proper.

Nanami hid a small, private smile as the temple approached. She could see it clearly before her white-eyed gaze, but didn't let that stop her from tapping the ground ahead of her with the cane she carried. She tapped lightly, so as not to reveal the silver blade inside the wood, just as she put a look of serenity on her face to fool the perceptions of those who saw her. With her small, slight frame, hidden beneath the white kimono of a shrine maiden she'd once killed, and her apparently sightless gaze, she was used to attracting pity. One hand clutched a small earthenware bowl in which she collected coins from sympathetic strangers. The persona of the little blind girl was like a well-worn pair of shoes for her.

The better to conceal the hardened shinobi.

The fourteen-year-old's hair, covered in a black wig woven from the hair of the dead priestess to disguise her distinctive silver hair, bounced as she moved. She considered her new colleagues and the place they were going. Although she had left the false sanctuary of the Village Hidden in the Rain, she knew she was not yet strong enough on her own to enact the sweeping changes the world needed for its' own good. Allies were important at this early stage, and a group of other renegade and outcast shinobi made for good allies and good potential recruits. She would have prefered to find younger recruits, preferably genin-age, whom she could train in her philosophies as well as the shinobi arts, but one made do. That could come in time. Perhaps, when her following was strong enough, she would found her own Hidden Village, a base from which to tear down the feudal order and the foolish shinobi who supported them. A base that could perhaps become the capital of a new, better world order.

She checked a sigh. But such dreams were for the future. For the present, she needed to grow accustomed to her new allies, and to study her prizes. Another smile, kept hidden in her own head. The scrolls she had stolen from the vaults of the Hidden Rain were now safe with her. The knowledge contained within them, knowledge deemed "immoral" and "forbidden" by those too blind to realize their potential, would be hers, and then she would spread it along with the knowledge she had acquired through other means. A third smile checked, as she remembered Noriko, the Hidden Stone Jounin whom she had "convinced" to share some of her village's secret lore before ending her. No, in her world no ninja lore would be forbidden.

She tapped her cane, tilting her head as though to catch sound with her ears, and waited to hear what her companions might say.

Following the group from behind, Izumo can almost be seen by outsiders as a bodyguard or a mercenary, if his utter lack of interest couldn't be easily read from his face. He followed regardless, because he had nothing better to do, plus, this group seemed a good candidate to lead him into conflicts and pain.

Though he wasn't exceptionally long, the amount of muscle in his body and the way that he walked gave him the look of a large man, but he didn't care. He would like to be smaller and more vulnerable, actually, if it meant more people picking at him. Anyway.

A pair of dark iron gauntlets were adorning Izumo's already big hands, making them seem even bigger, though those hands were empty now, and relaxed, which meant that he wasn't in a fight. That was rare.

Opening his mouth for a great yawn, he waves a heavy hand at the building and mumbles.

"Why were we here, again?"

Beyond the gates, leaning against the temple wall, sat Shirō Mengichii. The aged shinobi's eyes were closed, and his head had sunken low from his slumber. His legs lay straight upon the ground, the heels of his sandals upon the earth as one of his thin arms limply laid at his side, while the other protectively clung to the flap of his satchel.

The medical ninja wore clothes unbefitting his shinobi nature; a sky blue commoner's robe, haphazardly worn so that it exposed a good deal of the body armor beneath. His eyelids fluttered for a moment, and Shirō slowly came to consciousness as the shinobi began to approach.

The medical ninja stiffly began to settle into a much more dignified position, running his hand through the sharp blades of greying hair as his sleeve slid down the length of his forearm; revealing not only his frailty of his form but the assortment of needles pressed between two bands of leather around his wrist.

"Hmmmmm." he mused, opening his blue, and then brown eyes to regard the newcomers. Shirō was suddenly seized by a convulsion, his narrow eyebrows furrowing as he cringed. With one hand, he held his jaw closed as he stifled a cough. The other frantically burrowed itself into his satchel and soon produced a small syringe. Shirō parted his robes and pulled down his flexible body armor, revealing the middle-aged shinobi's bare chest.

With a moment's delay in the hacking fit, the doctor plunged the needle into his chest, and his convulsions seemed to die down, eventually receding altogether. As the medical ninja removed the needle and let his body armor snap back into position, he looked up at his soon-to-be comrades and smiled, creases forming upon his face. "That wasss... a close one." He said, his breath a little bit quicker than it had been before.

Plodding along silently in the midst of the group, Takeshi made for a bit of an odd sight; he seemed to be bundled up as if for winter. His hands were jammed into the pockets of a faded brown calf-length coat. The hem was a bit frayed, and it was beginning to look threadbare on the elbows and shoulders. Underneath were a grey hooded sweatshirt and a pair of dark pants, both appearing only marginally better for the wear than the coat. A few strands of chestnut-brown hair poked out from underneath his forehead protector, which was worn cap-style. The plate bore the defaced symbol of Konoha. A mask covered his face up to the nose, upon which sat a stylish-looking pair of sunglasses--probably the only piece of his outfit that didn't look like it was long past the point of needing to be replaced. All told, the only sign that there was a person underneath all the garments were a pair of ears and ten toes sticking out of his sandals.

With his gaze fixed on his feet, the Aburame seemed blissfully unaware of his surroundings. Nothing could have been further from the truth. While other shinobi had only two eyes and two ears to rely on, Takeshi had hundreds of thousands. Every kikai insect in his body was on high alert, from the drones just beneath his skin to the queens nesting next to his organs. The kikai's senses were much more acute than a human's in many cases, allowing them to detect subtle vibrations in the air and changes in pheromone levels. Anything the hive knew, he knew.

Confident in the hive's ability to warn him of any threats, he allowed himself the luxury of relaxing, even in a strange place with seven deadly criminals for company. His mind had almost begun to wander when Izumo's question brought him back to the outside world. "I think we'll find out soon enough," he said, pulling one hand out of a pocket and gesturing in Shirou's general direction.

Another figure walked along the simple country road alongside the others, keeping mostly to itself and not seeming to pay much attention to what the ninja around it were saying, or the location that they all were approaching. It stood at a slightly above average height, and its arms hung motionless at its sides, slightly obscured by the long sleeves of its tunic. Just from first glance it had the air of a shinobi about it, and further examination only lent support to that impression; its stride was easy, but perfectly silent; its clothes were not fancy, but carefully designed for freedom of movement; the hilt of a Katana went almost unnoticed over his right shoulder, seeming to deceive the eye of the viewer into passing over the beautiful weapon without thought; and finally, a Hitai-ate, a ninja forehead protector, laid pulled down around its neck and partly covered up by the fabric of its neckband. However, there was something unsettling about his walk, about his expression. It was confusing to the senses, each of which individually could detect nothing amiss about this shinobi, but when taken in tandem found its demeanor to be somehow lacking.

The Chuunin walked along with the others around him, keenly aware of the sounds of their footsteps but at the same time almost forgetting that anyone was there. He stared off to the side of the road, seeming to be looking at something, but not seeming to focus on anything at all. As they approached the temple and the medical ninja that stood waiting for them, he suddenly re-tuned his attention to his surroundings with a nearly audible snap. However, he said nothing, and instead looked to his company for direction.

PC: Jalin

A white ghost, little more than sound and wrapped in an expensive looking white shirt that had more in common with a overly large coat. His sleeves draped well past his wrists to hide everything below but the tips of his fingers. A black cloak with a thousand interwoven sliver studs draped across his back and left arm to obscure it entirely from view. His legs were covered by a pair of white shorts which terminated in white linen bandages wrapped around his legs and a pair of dark black sandals over his feet. Those hidden hands coupled with the lack of visible weaponry sans a small wooden fan held horizontal to the ground in a hip-sheathe made Jalin appear to be more nobility than ninja. This image fit in well with the group's overall appearances.

His solid white eyes, and the absentminded hand placed on Nanami's shoulder made him appear to be little more than her older brother. Izumo's bulk and general disinterest made him appear to be little more than a family friend. Add to it the Takeshi's attempt to appear aloft coupled with the obvious shinobi appearance from their Chuunin friend and you had a recipe for a rich family on an outing with friends and their hired shinobi bodyguard. It was an easy lie that didn't even need telling, and found itself to be even more easily believed.

Jalin kept his eyes focused straight ahead, but kept his companions in his excellent perhipial vision. He reached up to brush away some of his jet black hair away from his ears before he spoke, mostly to keep up the appearance of being blind. "We're here because Shirou has a friend who may or may not have a job for us. But the better question is.. Will this be worth our time?"

DM: Shirou

A quiet cough draws the doctor's attention upward. A man too far gone to be called 'balding' but with enough fuzz to avoid being called 'bald' stood over Shirou with the shoulder-slumped dignity of old-age. His white coat is stained in places with red, and his dark blue eyes are sunken deep into his skull by many restless nights. A flash of slightly yellowing teeth from his smile followed by his hand jutting out to be shaken announces his desires well before he puts word to them. "Good morning Shirou-san! Boy do I have a story to tell you.. And, I might add.. I have a bit of information you may like. Juicy information about where a certain group may find a certain base stocked with a few supplies."

He didn't arrive with the others, they didn't have to travel quite as far as he did to reach this place, but one of the last members of the Bansenshukai was coming up the hill as the man began to talk to the shinobi doctor. Takabe stood out among the his fellows with his spiky dusty blond hair that had been cut close to keep it from becoming out of control, skin a light tanned color that attested to having being exposed to the sun long enough to become accustomed to it's harshness but not long enough to become leathery and hard. Piercing green eyes seemed unnaturally aware of the world around him, always seeming to be looking straight forward though some could could detect the subtle shifts when his gaze shifted before his head turned. Unnatural and almost lizard-like in it's motions. Twin scars curve underneath of his eyes, looking as if someone had attempted to crudely cut them out but they were old wounds.

It was odd to see somebody in the heavy robes that he wore, the sort one used to shield themselves from a harsh desert wind, colored in earthy browns and tans that'd blend in well against the ground but not quite as well against foliage. Over top those heavy wool robes was a magnificently crafted piece of ninja armor that was as black as night and seemed to draw in the light around Takabe to give him a vaguely shadowed appearance. The wide belt he used to clasp the robes tight around his light frame had multiple scrolls tucked into specially designed slots to hold them, each one adorned with a kanji character. There were few other items of note that he even possessed, let alone wore openly, but they were some of his most prized possessions. Like the gold signet ring on his left hand, a finely cut onyx embossed with the golden character for 'Monster" on the center-most and largest facet. The other was the surprisingly large scroll that had it's strap flung over one shoulder so it rested on one hip so his primary hand could reassuringly rest on the aged paper.

The scroll, like his demeanor, was...off. Again black embossed with a golden lining was seen again, but the longer normal people looked at it the more uneasy they felt, or so he had noticed. It didn't have the same effect on shinobi considering they dealt with more harrowing things then ordinary people, so it wasn't exactly surprising. Sandaled feet trudged up the hill towards the temple, even as his grimace only grew. Why on earth did he have to come out this far? It didn't make any sense but it also made him doubt his judgment in joining in the first place. Sure these...people offered security but they also offered risk and betreyal in equal doses. Was that worth it?

Of course he wondered these things every time they had to come together for something like this. It wasn't anything new and by the time he had reached the others the grimace had fallen to be replaced by an...empty expression that had neither irritation, joy, anger, or anything else in it. Just...void.

"What is this information?" He asked politely from the rear of the group.

Nanami tilted her head in Jalin's direction, tapping her cane idly on the ground as if she were considering something. She had a cheerful smile on her face, almost as if she recognized the touch of a beloved older brother. Her words were very soft, almost a whisper to the group around them. "Attackers near us, maybe sixty feet, in the bushes on both sides. Armed. A dozen or more." Her stance was calm, as if she was a little civilian girl, but her mind was already racing through options for what they could do or should do.

Takeshi casually strolled up alongside Jalin and Nanami. "Nanami is correct. They are armed with spears and crossbows, and at least one of them is a shinobi," he said, keeping his voice low. "They just killed the hive mother I sent to investigate, so I think we can assume they know we're aware of their presence. Shall we attack, or wait for them to make the first move?"

Of course at this point, the Chuunin's attention, while keenly focused and aware, was simply not focused on the conversation being held within his hearing. The Shukketsu Iroi Temple up ahead, and particularly its two guards, were the subjects of his scanning gaze, and the preparations and strategy being discussed mere feet from him went completely unrecognized.

Nanami looked up, a slight smile on her face. "Destroy them utterly. I suggest we start with the ones who bear ranged weapons and the shinobi. The rest can be decimated piecemeal from there, as long as one is left for questioning. Preferably the shinobi. We might gain useful information. Suggestions on their destruction?" Her voice never raised beyond her quiet whisper.

Shirō got up from his seat against the temple wall, groaning as his joints cracked from the exertion. "Give us a moment." he said, putting his finger up to his doctor friend to silence him.

The shinobi doctor stroked his chin as his eyes darted from place to place, analyzing their surroundings. As he did so, his fingers went to the assortment of needles upon his wrists, and the shinobi dipped three of them into a glass bottle he produced from his satchel, full of a clear, almost white, liquid.

"It seems one of you has been followed." He said shortly before making a series of handseals and dropping the poisoned needles into his throat.

"Already I find my-" He took a moment to swallow, "-myself questioning the wisdom of...such an association."

Jalin

The missing-nin barely restrained the desire to narrow his eyes at Shirou. "If you want to leave, then just say so. I would frankly be amazed if you made it past that ring of bandits before one of us killed you to keep our secrets though." Jalin then turned about, releasing Nanami's shoulder. There was little reason to keep up the charade any longer, and so Jalin simply let his chakra flow in ways unique to his bloodline.

The veins around his eyes bulge out to unsightly extremes as his Byakugan becomes active. Jalin smiled as he directe it's penetrating and unescapable gaze upon the would-be ambushers turned ambushees. "Eight men, two women, one kunoichi and one shinobi--Iwagakure markings on both. The kunoichi is surprised, and they appear to be moving toward us.."

The only outwardly obvious Shinobi of the group finally seemed to catch on to the imminent threat, and listened carefully to Jalin's description of their foes. It made no move to ready itself for combat, but observed its new opponents dangerously. Finally, it looked to Jalin, who was apparently taking lead of the combat situation for the moment, and waited for his command on the situation, its expression and casual stance just as empty as ever.

[roll0]

Utsuro will delay action until he comes immediately after Jalin in the initiative order, even if he is already after him in the lineup and would thereby be wasting a turn doing so. He's waiting for Jalin to tell him to do something, even if it is only as specific as 'attack'; he won't do anything until he is told to. Presumably Jalin is aware of this, and knows that he will remain inactive until he is instructed otherwise.

Jalin

"Go after the ones with bows first. The spear-wielders will be easy to finish off. The shinobi should be much easier to deal with once we don't have to worry about the weaklings."

DM

The individuals in question are as Jalin described them. Eight men and two women in poor quality armor with five crossbows and five longspears between them. They don't bear any village markings, so everyone reaches the reasonable conclusion that they are mercenaries.

The kunochi is a red-headed girl no older than fifteen and with a teenage body to match. She's wearing a traditional Iwagakure vest and uniform, plus the Iwagakure headband wrapped around her left bicep easily identified her village association.

The shinobi opposite his Iwa-nin companion is a dark-headed boy of matching age with the lower half of his face obscured by a black cloth mask. His eyes appear to have swirling pools instead of pupils. He too wears a traditional Iwagakure vest and uniform plus an Iwagakure headband in it's proper forehead shielding place.

Takeshi glanced around at the newcomers encircling the group. Ten mercenaries amounted to almost nothing compared to a skilled shinobi, and even so, two such individuals wouldn't be able to hold their own against a group of eight nukenin. Why, then, were they still going to attack?

Best to play it safe and get rid of them quick, I suppose. What a shame that they have to die so young. Removing his hands from his pockets, the Aburame held his hands out, palms down, fingers splayed. The unmistakable buzzing of angry insects filled the air as thousands of kikaichuu poured out of his oversized coatsleeves like water from a bursting dam.

Ignoring the flying threats between Shiro and Jalin, Izumo starts to smile at the sudden hint of a starting battle. He somehow cracks his knuckles over the heavy gauntlets, and his body assumes a sturdy stance, with the legs pressing hard on the ground, which in total belies his expectant and almost chaotic thoughts. He looks like he can dash right on in any second now.

"Leave the shinobi to me."

Ninja from the Hidden Stone and their posse of peasants. Unlike the others the summoner didn't write them off, eying their spears cautiously as he stepped back along the road towards these foolish people. Finally he did let his smile show, head canting to the side even as chakra began to flow within him. He'd be ready when the time came.

"Leave the girl, I'll handle her myself." He says softly to Izumo though he doesn't look away from the line of peasants. Likely they would attack quickly, try to get back the edge that they had lost the moment that they had been detected. Not that it would likely do them much good.

Utsuro

Utsuro crouched slightly, one hand lifted to the katana hilt peeking over his shoulder; the other hardened into a hand sign. Like a bowstring snapping back, the Chuunin exploded forward, almost too fast to be seen... Very close to too fast to be seen. Three footfalls threw up miniature clouds of dust between the 40 feet between his starting point and his target before there was a sudden flash as his sword darted from the sheath almost too quickly for the light itself to strike it...

Take 10 on Nidan Kousoku; now moving at Speed Rank 2.

Izumo

Changing his mind as the battle expands, Izumo decides to skip the overture and pass directly to the main event. He runs along to the male shinobi as if going to make an ordinary attack, but stops, his hand drawing a curious, slow arc, and the blow somehow changes into a soft palm strike that pushes the shinobi from his left shoulder, forcing him to lose balance and spin around.

"Taijutsu Ougi... Rendan Kidouki." His clothes slightly singed around the edges, Izumo almost spits the words.

[roll0]

No saving throw, if the touch hits, the enemy forfeits his next turn. Taking 10 passes the perform check. The jutsu is 3 chakra.

HP:97 Chakra:66

Edit: Added the roll in the OOC thread. By the way, he is in 11,8.

Gritting her teeth against the pain of the burns and ignoring the smoldering of her robe, Nanami continued to summon her Yomi Numa in hopes of swallowing all these insolent fools once and for all.

I stated the direction and the effects of the swamp's summoning in my last post. :)

Takeshi was able to maneuver his way out of the brunt of the blast, but letting this Katon-user hang aroung for much longer would mean trouble. Holding out an arm, thousands of kikaichuu poured from his sleeve and made a beeline for the attacker.
