No, not funny quotes, but the epic ones (AKA climatic quotes). If there was already a thread like this one, I don't care. My candidate, strip #105:

:elan: So, uh... run away?
:roy: Nope. Charge.

I'M A SEXY SHOELESS GOD OF WAR!!!:belkar:

Hey, Redcloak, check it out. I totally just conducted a job interview in the middle of a battle! :xykon:

Wow, that might just be the stupidest thing I've heard all day, but since I've been talking to Elan all morning, it might not even make the top ten. :roy:

I GOT A FOUR!:elan:

Oops, I thought this was a 'funny' one. sorry.

"Order every hobgoblin, zombie, ghoul, or whatever else we have to charge that breach in the wall, and not to stop until they can feel the ocean spray on their faces.
We're going to win this war NOW." - Redcloak

That always felt epic to me. I mean, it seriously made me root for the bad guys. Not seriously, but you know, made me go all WOW. Maybe it's the imagery. What with the ocean spray and all...

PS: I really don't care, it's a very good line.

:redcloak:: WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH ME?!? (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0451.html)

A long one, but needs to be quoted in full. (Xykon shouts "Energy drain!" throughout the speech when casting it)

:xykon::Hey, you know what really gets under my skin? Proverbially, of course? A century of wizards looking down their damn noses at me. I know people think I'm stupid. Because I'm not a wizard. Because I get bored easily. Because I have no interest in strategy or tactics or contingency planning. But see, I've learned a lot over the years since I died. A lot more than I learned during my life. And now I see that planning doesn't matter. Strategy doesn't matter. Only two things matter: Force in as great a concentration as you can manage, and style. And in a pinch, style can slide. In any battle, there's always a level of force against which no tactics can succeed. For example, all I have to do is keep smacking you with Energy Drains, and soon you won't be able to cast any of your fancy spells at all. Because yes, I am a sorcerer--and this magic is in my bones, not cribbed off of "Magic for Dummies". And I can keep casting the same friggin' spell at you until you roll over and die. You can have your finely-crafted watch--give me the sledgehammer to the face any day.

the last 7 panels, from "...I don't have many spells left today" ..... "Disintegrate" .... "What? I said I didn't have MANY spells left."

Made me realise [UK spelling] just how powerful Redcloak really is.

And the speech in the middle of that sequence, helps us remember that life, and OotS, are more complicated than just 'Good vs Evil':

:redcloak:"Your city? Oh, I'm sorry, I thought someone would have told you by now. See, this is MY city now, paladin! I figure you owe me one village plus 35 years interest, so this is a good start!"

"Oh.

My other two seconds (fifths?) are the ghost-martyrs of the Sapphire Guard sequence (I actually think the single panel in which Xykon is standing there dumbfounded as a result of the previous panels is the *most* epic moment) and "This one's for you, mom. Fire the cannons!"

FROM 657 (Xykon vs V)
:xykon:
Xykon: You seem to have an interest in power, so let me educate you a little while I search for you.
Xykon: It's sort of this thing I like to do sometimes, especially for learned wizards such as yourself.
Xykon: Power, it isn't something that you put on or take off like a jacket. It's something you just ARE.
Xykon: If you can lose it by blowing two Will saves, you never really had any power in the first place, see what I'm saying?
Xykon: Hell, the idiot paladin understands better than you do, 'cause he got every one of those hit points I burned off of him the hard way: he earned them.
Xykon: 'Course, now he's also earned an upgrade to Prisoner First Class for daring to touch my pretty little bauble.
Xykon: It's sort of the same as how we've already been treating him, only now we get serious about it.
Xykon: Anyhoo, where was I? Oh, right.
Xykon: Your soul shenanigans are real flashy, but they had one weakness: they were shackled to your lame mid-level ass!
Xykon: I used to think spells equaled power, too, back when I was alive. I've learned a lot since then.
Xykon: You know what does equal power?
Xykon: Power.
Xykon: Power equals power.
Xykon: Crazy, huh?
Xykon: But the type of power? Doesn't matter as much as you'd think.
Xykon: It turns out, everything is oddly balanced. Weird, but true.
Xykon: For example
Xykon: ...Right now, power takes the form of a +8 racial bonus to Listen skill checks.
Xykon: So, Uncle Xykon, what's the moral of the story?
Xykon: A big pile of spells isn't enough when the other guy has a big pile of spells AND the strength to crush your windpipe with his bare phlanges[sic].
Xykon: And they died happily ever after.
Xykon: The End.

THIS is what I make every character ive made based on since I first read this comic. Its amazing, and just jaw droppingly epic. Best set of lines in the entire comic.
If I HAD to pick one single line from this speech?
Xykon: Power, it isn't something that you put on or take off like a jacket. It's something you just ARE.

Some really good ones so far. I also like these two from Elan.

:elan: You're wrong. You're wrong about everything. You only think you know what's supposed to happen.

But we get to decide what sort of story this is and what role we play - hero or comic relief. Or both at the same time.

and also

:elan: [Nale] didn't understand why I did it. I told him it was because I was the Good Twin, not the Neutral Twin. ... But see, Dad, that's the thing. I'm not a twin anymore. And you're not the real villain.

Don't worry. You'll live.

Maybe not the most badass, but the Clan Cobalt head had this to say:

(Trying to disregard the fact that this thread has been resurrected from more than a decade ago)

I agree with the greatness of Xykon's two major monologues ("Power equals power" from his fight with V, and "Give me the sledgehammer any day" from the end of SoD) and that basically everything Redcloak has said from book 3 on qualifies as well. However, I don't think we've yet mentioned "YOU'RE NOT DURKON AT ALL!" (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots1009.html) or Elan's speech to break out of the illusion. Elan's speech to break out of the illusion. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0889.html)

What I found interesting about that segment is that the illusion has Nale acting like a down-to-earth version of Elan. He's also by far the most realistic, if only evidenced by the number of lines.

Elan's parents on the other hand are both cardboard cutouts trying to keep an illusion up.

:durkon:*: You are who you are on your worst day, Durkon. Anything less is a comforting lie you tell yourself to numb the pain. And that's who I am. Your worst day, personified. (#1007)

And later on, the rebuttal.

:durkon:: Ye told me b'fore tha ye are who ye are on tha worst day o' yet life. An' tha's true. Tha's 100% true. But ye know who else ye are? Ye are who ye are on tha next day. Tha day ye wake up an' haf ta decide: are ye gonna make this tha new worst day o' yer life, or na? An ye are who ye are tha day after tha, which can also be yer new worst...or na. Ye are who ye are on all o' yer days. Includin' tha worst an' tha best. Ev'ry single one counts. All tha way ta tha end. (#1130)

Yeah. It kinda puts the Godsmoot into perspective, the reason why they vote sound less like callousness and more like the words of someone who has gone fully numb in an attempt to distance themselves from this never-ending horror. And, on the other hand, it makes gods like Thor, who still maintain their principles after so long, seem even cooler.

ijuinkun
2019-07-02, 01:39 AM
Exactly. Each of the gods has seen countless worlds die, and the "destroy the world themselves" scenario is their contingency plan for "rescuing" all of the currently-extant souls from being destroyed by the Snarl. The only new thing of note as compared to previous worlds is the existence of The Dark One with a whole new Quiddity, which makes possible the plan to regain the use of four-Quiddity constructs.

I've worked in construction all my life, but eventually everything I've ever built will fall down or be demolished. Sometimes there is no winning option, and in that case how you lose says more about you than every win you ever achheved.

and immediately following:

:xykon:: "That eye? That's your individual Idiot Tax. That's what this fiasco costs you personally. I want you to remember every moment of every day what happens if we sit on our lazy asses and rearrange the furniture in a ruined city instead of moving on the the next target. If I ever see you with more eyes than *******s, I'm sticking one in the other and giving your cape to the hobgoblin."

Really serves to drive the point home that while Xykon may seem personable, at his core he's purified, distilled evil. He's epic-level for a reason, and these bits really underscore that.

After an exhaustive study of n- dimensional calculus and some freshman bull sessions over beer and other toxic substances I can definitively prove that the concept of perpendicularity is not possible in realspace which is always curved, and therefore the whole argument in favor of its existence is a chimera. Named Trigak.

However, with more beer and other toxic substances I am prepared to support the idea that n-dimensional calculus is unreal, and that everything is inherently perpendicular to everything else.

As for Personal...I rather doubt there's an official feat (to the extent I can doubt an official feat doesn't exist in a game system where "must have defeated a hippopotamus in single combat" appears as a feat prereq in a first-party book). The whole reason for the game to have a range of personal (instead of using the range of "touch") is so it can't be applied to just anyone (hence why potions, which can be used by anyone, can't contain personal-range spells (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/creatingMagicItems.htm#creatingPotions)).

"How could this possibly be a joke? Where's the punchline? I know you're the straight man around here, so telling jokes isn't really your area of expertise. But trust me, there's nothing funny about it. He just walked in there and saved my life, and got straight up murdered for it."

"This is it, isn't it? This is what us losing looks like. ... We don't have months, Haley. We don't have days. Hell, we might not even have hours. And as of right now, we don't even have any spellcasters!"
"Roy, I'm a spellcaster."
"YOU DON'T COUNT!!"

"Roy, I'm a spellcaster"
"YOU DON'T COUNT"
is one for the funny list though, if you take it with little context.

My faves-

“Give me the sword. Then run.”

“Disintegrate! Gust of wind! Now, can we please resume saving the world?”

“You’re... me.”

This, and also this in http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0881.html:

Belkar: Hey, uh, quick question:
Belkar: If I'm experiencing intense nausea right now, do you think that's due to the blood loss—
Belkar: —or because your whining is making me want to puke?

Panel 1, Page 2
Haley: Belkar, I don't think this is the best time for—
Belkar: No, no, I think I have something to say to Captain Wallow-Pants here.

Belkar: Do you have any idea how bloody useless we were while you were taking your dirt nap?

Panel 2, Page 2
Belkar: The redhead can't lead anyone out of a wet paper bag, and I almost vomited myself to death because you weren't there to keep me from doing something stupid.
Belkar: And the other half was just as bad, from what I hear.
Belkar: Elan couldn't see past some lame subplot, Durkon sat on his thumbs, and I think the elf almost went nuts.

Panel 3, Page 2
Belkar: So you're gonna ***** out now and "sound the alarm?" Sure, whatever.
Belkar: I mean, that bell got rung when a billion hobgoblins stomped up and down on Hinjo's face. I don't hear the cavalry yet.

Panel 4, Page 2
Belkar: The get-the-hell-out-of-here part, though I can get behind.
Belkar: Try to lay low. Bet you can hide on your ditzy girlfriend's cloud. Bring your sister, too.
Belkar: And hey, maybe some other hero will pop out of nowhere to stop this Snarl thing at the last minute.
Belkar: Who knows? It would probably make a better story than this one.

Panel 5, Page 2
Belkar: Of course, it would mean that your best friend got horribly killed for absolutely no damn reason at all.

Panel 6, Page 2
Belkar: Me, I'm a heartless little bastard. I can shrug that kind of thing off.
Belkar: But you seem like maybe that might bother you at some point down the road.

When Belkar rubs this in Roy's face, showing that he's still exactly him, but different, is amazing.

Don't recall the last one. Is that from Durkon's revitalizvamprizination?

The ultimate part of that is the best quote (and Belkar's "summary statement") - "Hurting people is the only thing I'm good at."
