You may notice that Shapechanger and Mount are no longer votable options. This is because I don't want another one. Please refrain from voting for these.

Also, Minion has been removed. If you really want a minion, just apply the minion math to the result of this contest. I don't want to spend a week on a VUAM only to have the resulting monster have a sum total of 1 hp.
EDIT: New vote added! By popular demand, the fourth Vote will be for Tier, followed by a fifth for level.

Aberrant Beast! (by quite a bit) Okay, so now I'd like you all to go ahead and vote on this creature's Subtype. You can vote for two subtypes max. Remember, please Bold your votes.

Swarm and Homonculous.

Because those evil wizards at the end of low-level dungeons never have good enough side-kicks.

Also, perhaps you should add in a Tier vote before a level vote? Just a thought, so voters could judge about where they might want the monster to end up before deciding on an exact level.

Votes Tallied. The contest for 2nd place is heating up, so I'll leave this awhile longer.

Also, by popular demand, a new vote has been added: The Tier Vote!

So, this introduces a new setup.
First, the Tier Vote is run. This will give us either a 1-10, 11-20, 21-30 or 30+ range. Then, the level vote is run. This will give us the second digit of the creature's level.
So, its sort of like rolling a d4 and a d10, and seeing what comes out.

Mando Knight
2008-11-02, 06:52 PM
I'll go with Paragon Tier--levels 11-20.

@ all ^: I'm sorry, I was just announcing that a new vote had been added to the contest. The voting for Type was still open, and voting for Size will be next. However, I've decided that the time to close the Type vote (as you all seem so impatient to get to this thing's power level).

So the winner is...

Blind Swarm!

So this thing is going to be an Aberrant Beast with the Blind and Swarm subtypes. Interesting...

So next, I would like you all to vote on this creature's Size (not its tier). Fear not, those who have already voted for Tier. Your votes will be counted tomorrow night once the Size vote is done.

Sacrath

Shadow_Elf

I think Large is a perfectly good size for the swarm itself.

Mewtarthio
2008-11-02, 09:07 PM

Mando Knight
2008-11-02, 09:09 PM
Let's make this one Gargantuan. There aren't enough of those yet. Let's make it truly an abomination--the most massive swarm ever.

Zocelot
2008-11-02, 09:11 PM
Tiny, because PCs either think size is directly or inversely porportional to power level. In this case it may very well be neither, so that'll throw a wrench in their gears.

Shadow_Elf
2008-11-03, 10:06 PM
The votes are in, and the winner (to my dismay...) is...

Gargantuan!

So this is going to be a Gargantuan Swarm of Smaller Blind Aberrant Beasts!

So next, I'd like y'all to vote for this critter's Tier. If you already voted (during the earlier mishap) I would like to ask that, given the Size result, you repost your votes. You don't have to change your mind, I just want to give the option to do so.

Remember, 1 vote per customer, and yer options are:
Heroic (1-10) Tier
Paragon (11-20) Tier
Epic (21-30) Tier
Epic+ (31-35*) Tier

*Please note that Epic+ is not particularly useful, and as such I will excert veto on the Level vote if Epic+ wins so that nothing above a level 35 can be created (as anything higher is simply unusable).

Mewtarthio

Mewtarthio
2008-11-03, 10:19 PM
If it's going to be gargantuan and aberrant, the only way to realistically fit it into a game is to make it epic

Not necessarily. It's a swarm, so it's not like there's a single, enormous monster destroying the city. These things could be minor pests in some areas that occasionally band together into something truly nasty.

Like the old "rats in the cellar" quest: "Excuse me, young man, but my cellar has been overrun by an army of hideous, eyeless, alien monstrosities that man was not meant to know; could you be a dear and clean it out for me?"

Shadow_Elf
2008-11-03, 10:28 PM
Heroic as well.
Then why include it at all?

Because sometimes you just want an Orcus.
But mostly you don't :smalltongue:

"Excuse me, young man, but my cellar has been overrun by an army of hideous, eyeless, alien monstrosities that man was not meant to know; could you be a dear and clean it out for me?"

If there was room in my sig, I would quote this :smallwink:.

Leliel

Beacuse it a Gargantuan beast doesn't sound right for Heroic Tier: Epic.

rayne_dragon
2008-11-03, 10:46 PM
Paragon

Because I'd like to see more of them than if it was epic, but I also can't picture Gargantuan Swarms of Aberrations running all over the place like goblins. Also, while I haven't played 4e, I hear swarms are brutal at lower levels.

Also: "Excuse me, young man, but my cellar has been overrun by an army of hideous, eyeless, alien monstrosities that man was not meant to know; could you be a dear and clean it out for me?" is the best quote ever.

Also, one question: is there a specific reason you have included all the

Shadow_Elf

Okay, so the votes have been tallied, and the winner (this one was a real nailbiter) is...

Level 14!
(I'm sorry about my absent mindedness, I left this vote open much longer than intended)
So this creature is going to be a Gargantuan Swarm of Blind Aberrant Beast. The swarm will be appropriate for characters of the Paragon, most specifically level 14.

So next, I'd like you all to vote on this thing's Role and Power Level.

To review (for those who are unfamiliar with the role system)

Artillery: "Glass Canon"
Soldier: "Meat Shield"
Brute: "Rager"
Lurker: "Assassin"
Skirmisher: "Hit and Run"
Controller: "Flamethrower"

Normal: Average Monster
Elite: A monster who leads a group, or perhaps a creature than hunts in pairs. (Worth Two Average Monsters)
Solo: One monster. Against your entire party. Good Luck (worth 5 Average Monsters)

Mewtarthio

As scary as I want this thing to be, I don't feel that Solo is really appropriate for a swarm. Additionally, my (admittedly limited) understanding of 4e is that the Soldier role is a sort of bodyguard: Shadow Elf described it as a "meat shield," which implies that there has to be someone it's protecting.

I'm voting Elite Brute myself.

I'm voting Elite Brute myself.

We concur.

Solo Brute

*drools thinking of a swarm of aberrant beasts*

EDIT: I just pictured it. A group of adventurers enter a cave and find themselves fighting a horrible thing. A swarm of aberrant things in the darkness, killing everything they can find.... and they can quickly engulf the whole party!

*keeps drooling*

Well, the votes have been tallied, and the winner (by some strange consensus) is...

Elite Brute!

So this is going to be a Gargantuan Swarm of Blind Aberrant Beast that... you get the point.

So, now I'd like you all to vote on its Attack Keywords. Pick two and please, Bold your votes! The highest voted keywords (my discretion) will be used as for its powers.

A swarm of mini-Cthulhus? Well, there seems to be a connection between the stars and Radiant power, and I like the idea of the "good" energy not always being so shiny and happy.

Also, for the sheer mind-destroying horror of a swarm of aberrant beast man was not meant to know, I'm going with Psychic.

Healing and disease? Really. That seems so very... random. I suppose that makes Chaotic a good enough vote as far as that goes. With the ability to heal and the ability to cause disease, we've got both potential good and potential evil in there, so I guess that balances out to Neutral. Looks like my vote goes toward Chaotic Neutral.

RTGoodman

Healing and disease?

Well, Healing doesn't mean that it has to heal others. Powers that let a creature heal itself also have the Healing keyword. It could just as easily be poisoning enemies around itself to heal itself up or something.

Chaotic Neutral seems the best choice. I think I'm gunna use this one in my game pretty soon, actually. The level is about right.

As for healing and disease, what about a healing disease? It actually gives you regeneration, increasing as you progress down the disease track, but it's extremely painful, or some other side effect. I'm thinking those worms from Futurama that made Fry smart and fit and such.
