Wow, so soon after the last awesome result. Okay, since it doesn't seem to happen on my VUAM threads, I'll vote for Giant. We need giants in this playground!

Yes, the bigness only makes the hate worse.

I, too, hate giants and Aberrations aren't my cup of tea, so let's see if Afro can do justice to the Fae - I'm sick of the Disneyfication of the Fair Folk.

afroakuma

Regarding whether or not I can "do justice" to anything, cast your verdict on the previos villain. I'm interested to hear what people thought.

We no longer doing the vote-for-three-options thing for type? If not, I'll go Fey. If so, my other two are Outsider and Construct.

Fey it is, I want Celtic fae!

Speaking of which, I have some work to do on that tonight.

2008-11-02, 02:03 PM
I guess I'll cast my vote with Fey and battle for medium size when it comes to that part. We have enough spritish things as it is.

afroakuma
2008-11-02, 02:07 PM
Sorry, Juhn, there's no size vote in this contest.

However, I will say that I have Celtic heritage, and leave it at that.

Mewtarthio
2008-11-02, 02:17 PM
What's more embarrassing, being pasted by a giant, or being pasted by a butterfly-winged sprite?

This sort of misconception is exactly why we need more creepy Fair Folk. Disney's not done that sort of thing since Sleepy Beauty, in which they managed to create the second most nightmare-inducing (for Kid Me, anyway) Disney villain ever (the first being that guy at the end of Fantasia).

That's a vote for Fey, by the way.

Thane of Fife
2008-11-02, 02:37 PM
I like Ike. I mean, Magical Beasts (not Ike).

Juhn
2008-11-02, 02:49 PM
Heh. I'll vote magical beast next time, though I'm thinking it'd make a better VUAM than VUAV.

Also I should have noticed that there is no size vote. I got it confused with VUAM. I'll just have to trust you, afroakuma, as I've got quite a bit of Celtic heritage as well (as in, nearly all of it).

afroakuma
2008-11-02, 02:54 PM
*shrug* I'd have said the same thing about plants, but the previous villan got a rather good reception.

Juhn
2008-11-02, 02:58 PM
...That's a good point. I don't think Magical Beast stands a chance of winning this one, but I'll probably place my vote there next time (assuming there is a next time).

Also, if we're going with Fey, is there any way to vote "Incomprehensible" or "Alien Morality" for motivation? The Fair Folk don't tend to think the way we do.

Lyndworm
2008-11-02, 02:59 PM

Mewtarthio
2008-11-02, 05:57 PM
Also, if we're going with Fey, is there any way to vote "Incomprehensible" or "Alien Morality" for motivation? The Fair Folk don't tend to think the way we do.

Hm... Would that fall under PCV? They do evil things simply because that's their job?

Now, truly incomprehensible motives just aren't that interesting. It's viable for a monster, but it's not an especially good read for a detailed villain. Compare the story and motivations of our last villain with, say: "One day, Bob looked outside his window. It was sunny and Tuesday, so he killed us all."

afroakuma
2008-11-02, 06:01 PM
That sounds like The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime.

"Yellow cars meant it was a bad day."

Juhn: I'm inclined to say that their actions have a discernable motivation to themselves, so that would be the best way to vote. However, if you feel differently, I'd gladly accept an alternate Motivation vote when the time comes.

Verdant Prince Details

http://www.ravenmimura.com/images/full/VerdantPrince.jpg
The Verdant Prince is a powerful fey creature that makes supernatural pacts with mortals, providing them with services or blessings in exchange for a price that inevitably is more onerous than expected. Arrogant, capricious and cruel, they deliberately fill the terms of the bargain to the letter while exploiting their chosen form of payment to cause the greatest strife. They lead many lesser fey creatures.

Yeah, I'm considering the possibility of making an additional rule to my VUAs that discourages vote-changing. I feel like it's done too often, & is often based on how subsequent votes are cast. This demonstrates a lack of decision & commitment that should dilute the rest of contest. I mean, you can't change your vote in real elections, why can't people stand by their votes here?

afroakuma
2008-11-04, 07:53 PM
I suppose it's because here, latecoming voters often have to steer towards one of the "viable options" to make a ripple.

I'll consider the amendment on future contests.

Owrtho
2008-11-04, 10:19 PM
I don't think that the vote changing should be changed. Or if at all put a limit on the number of times per round. Part of the reason is that unlike in a normal election, the voting here isn't confedential. Everyone knows everyone else's vote and the current standing of the votes. Thus if someone has two things they prefer, and the one that they like slightly less is doing better than the one they prefer, they will more likely vote for the one they like slightly less. Simmilarly, if they see that one of the options the realy dislike is winning (significantly), they will more likely vote for the option that has the best chance of beating it that they aren't as opposed to. This in the end give late coming voters more of an advantage in casting their vote. The ones that vote early are able to have greater influance (as it is their early votes that impact the late comer's votes), but are much more uncertain as they could vote for something and everyone else ignores it.

Owrtho

afroakuma
2008-11-04, 10:24 PM
Yeah, but look at last round, when several people changed from their original (leading) vote to a different selection, which ended up winning. That's dirty voting. There was no impact from early voting; rather, the leader was converted out of due to a few users' stray comments. Also, rallying against the most popular vote because you dislike it is unproductive and undemocratic to those who cast their votes for it from the outset. Essentially, it discards the validity of early votes, and of those of anyone who isn't watching at the end.

Put me down for Hexblade.

Owrtho
2008-11-04, 11:33 PM
However, the fact that votes are known as soon as they are cast compromises the system. Also, how is it undemocratic for a statment made by another voter to change someone's mind? The only difference in that and in normal elections is that in a normal election, all the discusion would be done beforhand without any actual voting after which everyone would make a decision in light of the descusion and cast their vote confidencialy. The statments that make others change their votes could be considered little differant than an election campaign. As for the ganging up agains unliked votes, that can't be avoided with the public voting system used.

If you realy wanted it to be like a normal voting, you would likely have to have a day or two of debating over the choices, followed by a period when you can be pmed votes (and not accept votes befor that period). And you would only anounce the votes once the voting period was over.

Owrtho

Didn't say I wanted it to be like normal voting; I'm simply suggesting that after the Verdant Prince fiasco above, I should enforce responsible voting.

Also, how is it undemocratic for a statment made by another voter to change someone's mind?

It is undemocratic not to have responsible voting.

As for the ganging up agains unliked votes, that can't be avoided with the public voting system used.

Again, drawing votes out of losing categories is what's enabling this.

Mewtarthio

It is undemocratic not to have responsible voting.

But what is "responsible voting"? Sure, you could easily argue that people switching votes away from a losing side just to spite the side they don't want to win is irresponsible, but what about the people who changed from Verdant Prince to Unique Humanoid? That's clearly a valid opinion change, as they switched away from the winning side when they decided that they no longer wanted it to win.

Also, Ninja.

Responsible voting is casting your vote when you've determined that it is what you want to commit to. If you need time to gauge where the wind is blowing, you take it.

Again, I'm not saying that I'm going to eliminate vote changing. I'm simply saying that it was a concern in the last round of voting.

Also, I have yet to see an argument that supports vote changing in a manner other than attacking vote locking. T'would probably be more compelling.

Lord_Gareth

Vote changing is something I personally don't care about, but allowing vote changes allows for shifts of opinion; from a wacky vote to a serious one, for example, or to get behind a particularly eloquent argument. The voting community for these contests is relatively insular, which means that you can't rely on new people to shift the vote behind a really good idea; you must persuade the old guard.

Knaight

CR 6 because the last thread i looked at also had a high CR villain, which in a game starting at level 1 wouldnt be killable for like 15 sessions. (at the rate me and my friends play).

A villain doesnt have to be super-powered to be compelling. The smaller the scale the more options. For instance, epic villains would seem silly with small-focus goals like avenging one persons death or becomeing the head of one thieves guild, even though these situations provide more personal involvment.
For the sake of narrative and RP and slow games. Vote 6.

Well, a Verdant Prince is a CR11 monster, so I guess the only question is: what level of Hexblade do we want this thing to have? Even if it's only a 1st-level Hexblade, then it would be CR12. Now, a good villain needs good powers, so it can't be too weak. But we shouldn't pile on too many class levels, as we should probably avoid making this an epic villain. We do want this to be usable in most campaigns, after all.

Now, I think a good level for Hexblade is 7th: this is when they get Greater Hexblade's Curse, & it's right before a dead level. So, I suppose I'm throwing my support behind CR18.

afroakuma
2008-11-05, 12:44 AM
I should point out that the last villain was scalable thanks to its template. Stormthorn, that would allow you to use it (on a level 1 Aristocrat, which fits the fluff perfectly) as of level 2/3 without much risk.

Just because they are stronger than him together, doesn't mean they can't be its minions. A General of an Army can't take on all his soldiers One against all. They trust him (or fear him) (or are ensorcelled by him) (or are created by him) (or are summoned and bound to and by him), so he gives them orders. They don't need to be a fraction of his power.

Except for the hexblade thing, as I have no idea what those are. If it involves cursing and such, though, then the voters are doing this right.

I voted CN in the last one, but it fits better here. I've already pointed out that I'd like this fey to be entirely inscrutable as far as motivation goes, which would be interpreted by normal people as Chaotic. As people have pointed out, the Fair Folk are as likely to help you as to harm you (for their own reasons, of course), so Neutral seems like the best fit on the Good/Evil axis.

I and everyone else who voted for CN wish to change our votes to LG. Then to LN, then back to LG. Then half of us will grow discontent with the current government and form a splinter cell of CE enthusiasts. Faced with such a clear and present danger, the remaining LGers will slowly migrate to TN, scattering about 75% of the whole between LN and NG. Meanwhile, the CEs will fight amongst themselves and draw the attention of the LE who will wish to slowly ensnare the wills and powers of the misbegotten and aimless CXs through subtle manipulation. After nine years of propaganda, two-thirds of the CXs will have fallen into LE territory, another 10% into NE and the remainder will have reincorporated themselves into the LG-in-name-only crowds, which will have scattered all over the XN and XG alignments. Forced into close quarters, the LG-in-name-only empire will war with the LE overlords and someone somewhere will succumb to hubris, reducing the vastly populated alignment spectrum down to its original numbers. Facing death by starvation in the new moral and power vacuum, droves of people will flock to the one remaining ideal: everyone for himself, or CN.

In other words, it was meant to be.

Barring some insidious conspiracy in these last 100 minutes, CN will sweep it by a landslide.

now remember, CN doesn't have insidious conspiracies.

it has giant frog.

I was referring to insidious conspiracies by the other alignments.

I'm sure you're aware that I am very much in favor of giant frog. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=92837)

Alright, the votes have spoken! The villain will be Chaotic Neutral.

Now, the moment we've all been waiting for, the vote for this foul fairy's Primary Motivation.

The table has been alphabetized for ease of use.

Ah well, then one vote for Curiosity.

I agree, because a villain who's just destroying the world to find out what happens is awesome
curiosity

The fey has an alien mindset, which in turn means that our mindset is alien to him. He is, furthermore, high-level enough to abduct, toy with, and/or experiment on most people with nigh impunity, while still being low level enough to concern himself with mortal affairs. I vote Curiosity.

You know, I wouldn't be surprised to see every single category get at least one vote this time. Quite a variety so far.

no! all should vote for curious Fae!

I'm going to vote curiosity, I like logic as a motivation in general, but for a fey, curiosity fits better.

Curiosity, but I did want to go pure malice.

Just as he bursts into a wild, cursing rage.

I also vote for Amusement. The Fey are just toying with us, and don't really care how what they do affects the material plane.

I was intrigued by the idea of Punch-Clock Villainy from the last VUAV thread, & it seems a bit more apt here, so that's what I shall vote for.

Guru, it is possible to vote for pure malice: malevolence. Think Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty.

Those of you who voted Amusement - it wasn't actually on the chart. I felt the nearest similar option was Apathetic malice - the drive to do mischief out of boredom or without commitment. If anyone would like to debate that point, feel free.

Hmm.. well my first choice would be boredom. It's the epitome of chaotic neutral motivation to me. But since it's not a choice I'll go for Apathetic Malice for that luke warm "close enough" feel.

I must admit that I was really tempted to vote for hunger simply because the image of a humanoid Fey hexblade charging about the place and cursing everything he sees in a desperate search for a bacon sandwich almost made me fall over.

I'll also go with Curiosity, but not just because everyone else is doing it, but because it fits so well with the growing concept. Which, come to think of it, is probably why everyone else is doing it.

Also, if we're going with Fey, is there any way to vote "Incomprehensible" or "Alien Morality" for motivation? The Fair Folk don't tend to think the way we do.

Of course, if this is not an option I'll have to figure out what is closest to this.
