View Full Version : [TOWN] The Town Inquisition

In the more shady part of Town, far from such lively places as the Cathedral of Flames or the Dancing Fox Inn, where thick clouds of fog fill the air, a new building has appeared. Relatively small and unassuming from the outside, the Inquisition appears no more than a black wooden shack. Those who persist will find it windowless and reinforced with plates of steel. But between the fog, the neighborhood, and the very nature of the building, anyone who is not heading for the place on purpose is very likely to ignore, even completely overlook the Inquisition.

Entrance is granted via a black wooden door on the side of the building. It opens into a shadowy hallway with a ceiling that seems higher than it should. Various items and artifacts hang from the walls, or are placed on various shelves. Chains dangle from the rafters. The room has a draft. On either side of the creaking floorboards are four or five erratically placed doors, made of dark wood filled with knots. Somewhere in the middle of the darkish hallway is a side hall that descends into even deeper shadows than the first. At the very end of the first hall is a door, more elaborate and sturdy-looking than the others. On the front is the skull of some bizarre animal from another plane. The door opens to the office of The Inquisitor, Xallace Ja'Mord. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17658&page=28)

The office is similar in design to the rest of the building, made of blackish-blue wood, with a strangely high ceiling. The rafters, high above, seem randomly placed. Strange things hang down ten or more feet. The room itself is in the shape of some ugly polygon, and is studded on the sides with an assortment of artifacts and items even more exotic than before. In the middle of the room is a wooden desk, covered in papers, pens, a greyish, old looking globe, and a humanoid skull. Directly behind the desk is a tall wall of neatly organized dark cubbies and cabinets.

The exact purpose of The Inquisition varies. In general, information that is supposed to be secret can be found out here, always for a price, and often for new bits and pieces of information. If the information is not known here already, either Xallace or one of his many agents can be hired to be sent out to garner it. For targets... less than willing to cooperate in revealing information, there is a torture chamber belowground, filled with the most fiendish and diabolical intruments conceivable. There are also prisoner cages, for those unwilling to admit their secrets. The servants of The Inquisitor include various constructs, in addition to a small group of free-thinking spies and information gatherers, mostly made up of Changelings. Will add bios to these characters later. Favors and money can also be made here by exchanging information with Ja'Mord. Many an unassuming hobo has made a fortune by revealing secrets of a more substantial nature here.

Unless Xallace is here, the building is locked and protected by a variety of charms and abjurations. Only he and the constructs live here, and those are kept turned off unless needed.

Xallace is in his office, in his normal, Fevran'dik form.

Some Clerics anda couple of older Acolytes are walking around in the slums offering healing services, as they do every day. They see the Inquisition and are torn as to whether or not to take a look around.

An NPC from the DFI runs in.

Inquisitor Inquisitor! Some lady in the DFI just robbed all the NPCs. She had curly brown hair and blue eyes.

Which rouses the clerics' curiosity.

Yet no one decides to do anything.

The Inquisitor hears the shouts.

I'm in my office!

The clerics march over and knock on the door.

No response, but it's unlocked.

The score is menacing and mysterious. :smalltongue:

The NPC pushes past the clerics. There's a lady at the DFI who stole all the NPC's money. She hypnotised them or something!

Really. Do you think I can do anything about it?

Xallace in his current form is a bald humanoid with blueish gray skin, glowing orange eyes, and an elongated skull. A tall collar obscures his mouth.

The clerics march in.

The NPC's mouth drops.

You can arrest her and get all our money back.

I'm afraid, miss, that that is the job of the Police.

I am simply here to... 'gather' information.

He looks at the Clerics.

Can I help you gentlemen?...

Moofin Bard

The NPC leaves, disheartened.

We were merely curious as to the nature of this establishment.

It is an Information Exchange.

Lupy
2008-11-02, 04:46 PM
I see. Is that all?

Beholder1995
2008-11-02, 04:47 PM
...

Essentially.

Tell me, just who do you men work for?...

They will all feel subtley compelled to not argue and just tell him...

Lupy
2008-11-02, 04:50 PM
Archbishop Lupy.

Beholder1995
2008-11-02, 04:55 PM
Who is he?...

Lupy
2008-11-02, 04:58 PM
Why, the greatest man in the city of course! The High Priest of the Fire God!

Beholder1995
2008-11-02, 04:59 PM
I see.

You may be on your way now.

He waves his hand at them in a shooing gesture.

Lupy
2008-11-02, 05:01 PM
Why did you want to know?

How did you not know? Who else's men wear orange?!?

Quiet you.

Beholder1995
2008-11-02, 05:04 PM
He changes the subject again. The charm goes back on.

And this Archbishop character, he is influential, no?...

Lupy
2008-11-02, 05:07 PM
Why, he gives the only major services at his Cathedral and keeps the only standing army.

... Why do you want to know?

The older man (lighter orange) is suspicious.

Gentlemen, I am The Inquisitor.

But this conversation never happened.

It's true... the memory of the last thirty or so seconds should be completely wiped from their minds.

Lupy
2008-11-02, 05:11 PM
The oldest cleric has an iron mind, he shouts, Get the mindbreaker! And the clerics and acolytes open up on him with their controlled fireballs.

Beholder1995

It's really powerful magic... unless the old guy has, like, an epic-level Will, he's going to be affected.

Lupy
2008-11-02, 05:16 PM
Oh one of those sorts? Nevermind then.

Beholder1995
2008-11-02, 05:18 PM
Indeed. If you read my thing on Xallace in the Characters thread, you'd know he's OVER NINE THOUSAND!!! :smalltongue:

Gentlemen, I believe you know the exit.

Indeed. If you read my thing on Xallace in the Characters thread, you'd know he's OVER NINE THOUSAND!!! :smalltongue:

So what!??!??! :RAGE!!!! RAAA!!!:
I mean, if it takes 10,000 years for someone to grow into an adult . . . 9,000 is pretty young!!elevendyone!!

:smalltongue:

So what!??!??! :RAGE!!!! RAAA!!!:
I mean, if it takes 10,000 years for someone to grow into an adult . . . 9,000 is pretty young!!elevendyone!!

:smalltongue:

I'm sure that's hilarious in some way, but at the moment I am pure :smallconfused:.

Mee
2008-11-02, 06:16 PM
Okay, think:
If it takes a person 10,000 years to grow into, in human years, a 16 year old, 9,000 years would be like . . . 13? 14?
Just because he's old, doesn't mean he's powerful.

Beholder1995
2008-11-02, 06:30 PM
Where do you get the ratio of 10,000:16? :smallconfused:

Mee
2008-11-02, 06:33 PM
I'm just guessing randomly.
I mean, compare elves to half orcs.
Elves are 110 when they are adults, half orcs are . . . 14?

Beholder1995
2008-11-02, 06:36 PM
Well, don't go by a random guess... :smalltongue::smallconfused:

In Fevran'dik years, 9000+ is rather venerable.

Mee
2008-11-02, 06:38 PM
Not if, according to that race, he's not even matured yet. If so, he might not be that powerful.

Beholder1995
2008-11-02, 06:42 PM
But he is matured! What would make you think he isn't?...

Mee
2008-11-02, 06:46 PM
I dunno.
But you said: He's 9,000! Of course he's powerful!
I was pointing out that age doesn't matter. :smalltongue:

Xallace is at his desk. Two humans with black hair and crimson robes enter, dragging in what looks to be a regular commoner, hanging limply between the two robed people. The collars of the two red-clad characters are very high, and cover their mouths and noses. One is a woman, and the other is a guy. Xallace looks up and stares the commoner man in the eyes.

It doesn't have to be like this... you could just tell us... :smallsigh:

Never. :smallmad:

Very well. Cardinals- he looks from one red-robed figure to the other- Take him downstairs. :smallsigh:

Of course, Inquisitor.

They drag the man downstairs. A few minutes later, violent, if muffled, screams are heard. They are inaudible from the outside.

Xallace is in his office.
