Hi guys, the lazy man has returned.

I am playing (yay!) in a 4e game that a mate of mine is running and he would like a 3x3x3 for all the characters... and well you know lazy man...

In case you are not familiar with Serenity's 3x3x3 backgrounds what you have is a sheet with three friends/allies, three contacts (neutral but useful to know), and three rivals/enemies as adventure hooks for the DM to use to enbroil you in the action/use as a stick to move you in the right direction.

Some Character info-
He is a Drow Paladin in Forgotten Realms and comes from Impiltur.
He worships Amaunator.
He is married to a Eladrin Swormage from Thay.
His parents were merchants on the sea of fallen stars.
He's a pretty traditional paladin if a fairly atypical drow.
He is currently acompanying his wife on a quest to locate an Eldarin heirloom.

So what I was hoping from you good folk is a big bucket of supporting characters that I can slot into the roles of friend, contact and foe.

This line scares and confuses me.

Did they change drow? I know the changes for pally.

Anyway, alignment and more info on your wife would help.
Also I don't know 4ed or FR too well...who is Amaunator?

Fairly atypical drow - does that mean he's evil?

I did say Atypical..
Amaunator (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amaunator) god of Light.
Paladins of Amaunator must be LG.

My wife is another player.
Menett (my character) met her whilst traveling aboard his parents merchant ship, he is a charming fellow and swept her from her feet while she was escorting a local dignitary from Thay oversea's. After a whirlwind romance they were wed in the Feywild (her parents very much disapprove of her choice but were forced to consent by Eldarin law after Menett completed a series of tasks they set him to win her hand)

There's that bigotted elven drow hunter Bannar that was leaving you alone in a truce state before but your marriage to an Eladrin made him crave for your blood once again.

How could you forget human Father Farai, you've run errands for the aging goodly priest. He was the one that used his experience as being the only dark skinned human in his village to help you strike the temporary truce with Bannar in the first place.

"Warchief" Frukas is an odd fellow. He insists he has the might of a 3 legion strong force of his goblins behind him but you've never seen him in the company of more than 2. He sells delicacies from the underdark that the overworld just can't seem to appreciate.

Ah, Glug to the rescue, that's the stuff.

Is Bannar akin to the Banner in the Chronicals of Thomas Covenant?
even if not, it's an interesting idea the placid unflappable dedicated pursuer, bound by the law but waiting for the slip he feels must come in Menetts 'facade'.

I was thinking of having a rival of my wifes brother, he hates Menett, and will do him every disservice short of killing him trying to 'free' his misguided sister from his influence.

Is Bannar akin to the Banner in the Chronicals of Thomas Covenant?

I am not well read in fantasy literature... so no. I originally wrote Dorrow intil I realised it was too close to being Drow. Then I though name being a symbol (like batman), then I took it literally, a banner.

That's how all my NPCs get named. That an a huge emergency list.

who is Amaunator?

Lathander became Amaunator.

I don't know the full story but that is what a friend of mine told me.

Ally/Adversary - Hariflasch the Glorious.
Flashman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Paget_Flashman) as a paladin. Tell me your DM doesn't love that idea.

Contact - Cousin Vurrl.
Vurrl's a natural merchant. He's got more schemes than sense, a nose for cash, more shady associates than you care to recall, and he always has an eye on the bottom line. Gladly took on what your father planned on being 'your' place in the family shipping business. Never sticks his neck out to help, but make it worth his while...

What? You always need a Del Boy character who can turn up anywhere. :smallwink:

Re: Amaunator. According to the 2E/3E fluff ("Netheril" and "Lost Empires of Faerun") if Lathander is the morning, Amaunator is the sun at its' zenith. He seems to be an archetypal 'father figure' solar deity (aka, Pelor in his FR hat).

You should read Stephen Donaldson he has written some epic settings into his novels.
All the same your name sparked somthing in my noodle so that is good.

@^ Ah you spotted my oh so subtle hint then... Del boy FR style, I'm sure I can work with that, he'd have to be human... or maybe a dwarf... though Rodney would never work as a dwarf... they ought to be a (even more) bungling brother involved.
Flashman would put a big fat grin on my DM's face... I'm not sure I could take making him that happy.

@^^ Yeah pretty much Amuanator is Forgotten realms Lathander.

Er... Lathander is Forgotten Realms Lathander.

Or he was, until Amaunator ate him after the spellplague.

Sometime in the past: Amaunator, Netherese god of the sun, bites it
Sometime more recent: Lathander the Morninglord is heretically theorized to be Amaunator's reincarnation
3e-4e transition: Lathander accepts his heritage as a reincarnation and becomes the reborn Amaunator. Heretics have a kegger to celebrate.

Lathander/Amaunator is pretty much the Forgotten Realms equivalent of Pelor, though they were created independently by Greenwood and Gygax, respectively.

That explain everything?

To compile the NPCs created (with a couple of mine added in):
Enemies:

The elven drow hunter Bannar
Rival for your wife: A very proper Eldarin fellow who: a. Was favored by wife's parents or b. was planning on stealing the wife, despite a house conflict
The Parents. Probably arcane, but also possibly fighters. Very entrenched in house politics, they could pull up a variety of Fey opponents out of the blue

Contacts:

"Warchief" Frukas: The underdark merchant
Cousin Vurrl: The scheming merchant
Lanarge, the Thayan Mage: your mentor in the arcane arts, this prodigal evoker follows Kossath (the fire god) and is extremely inflexible. However, he would be absurdly powerful in the political structure if he hadn't lost a bet to (insert other Red Wizard) many years ago, reducing him to adventuring once again.

Allies:

Hariflasch the Glorious: The Flashman Paladin
Father Farai: The cleric of Amaunator (how does he view Thay?)
Then, of course, there is the little Josephine, a halfling fay warlock who's also desperately in love with you. You rescued her from slavery on one of your quests for your wife, and she was instantly enchanted by you. She would never do you ill, and would always assist you in any way she can, but secretly is trying to figure out how to get your wife stuck somewhere so Josephine can become your bride.

For future reference, use an emoticon (:smallwink:) to convey sarcasm. On a forum, It becomes hard to understand. For example, I get two meanings out of the above statement. 1. Drow players almost always play rebels that are "trying to prove themselves" in "good" society. This kind of statement should have an emoticon. check this OOTS strip. http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0044.html
2. If non sarcastic, this could be seen as saying he is "good", which is abnormal for Drow in the story sence. also this could be saying that drow elves in this setting are generically good, which I believe is incorrect.

Sorry about being snooty, but I want it to be possibly quotable if this pops up in other threads.

But it's not sarcasm. He's just used a four sylable word. Four sylables! We're D&D players, surely we can grasp the concept that atypical is the opposite of typical.:smalltongue:

When I do things like this, I think it's fun to take characters who from outward appearances should be allies and turn them into enemies and vice versa. A few examples follow, keep in mind I know little about both 4th edition and forgotten realms, but perhaps these can at least get your juices flowing.

Enemy - Father Reston was the second in command of your religious order when you took your vows, but has since taken over leadership after the death of the last pontiff. He is mostly a good man, but is also a fanatical racist and has tried to find good reason to excommunicate you since he learned of your ordination.

Ally - Kelgrim Bloodfist is the leader of a goblin tribe that your adventuring party nearly wiped out several years ago. You, however, talked the rest of your party into showing mercy on them. The decision turned out to be a good one, while the tribe hasn't completely reformed their ways, they have at least stopped bothering the local human settlements (probably becoming lawful neutral). Kelgrim, in the meantime, has shown you great respect in your many visits back to the area.

Nice list let me add a few:
While adventuring, you've made a enemy of someone who is not pleased with yout activities.
Zarg the Overlo, "Pirate King" as he likes to be called, has crossed weapons with you and your travels.

He was smuggling men and woman across land and sea (sea at the time you met) to sell them for high price. You were able to free the prisoners, but not without a fight.
He got a good scar on your left knee cap; while you returned on on the back of his hand. The fight ended in a duel as you had to go and he wasn't close enough to kill you as you leapt away from his ship (swimming naturally) back to your groups.

While he doesn't actively spend too much time searching for you; if he learns of your location he will try to pay you back.

In his defence, you might whine if you were a leper... but yeah the characterisation is not the strongest I've ever read, but the setting is great stuff.

Thank you, most helpful.

@^ I quite like the pirate king idea, perhaps I could incorperate an encounter with him in the back story of Menett meeting his missus... might add a bit of drama to the story.

Robbing Asur's list and updating so far I have-

Enemies:

The elven drow hunter Bannar: Hates Drow and will do everything within the law to impede Menett. Has a strong sense of honour and will not act outside the law, he is waiting for Menetts facade to fall so he can hunt him in the open.
Wifes brother: A very proper Eldarin fellow who is horrified by her choice and wishes to rescue his sister from Menetts strange hold over her. He has spent a good deal of gold attempting to break the enchantment that holds his sister, and refuses to believe it isn't there.
The Parents: Probably arcane, but also possibly fighters. Very entrenched in house politics, they could pull up a variety of Fey opponents out of the blue
Father Reston: was the second in command of your religious order when you took your vows, but has since taken over leadership after the death of the last pontiff. He is mostly a good man, but is also a fanatical racist and has tried to find good reason to excommunicate you since he learned of your ordination.
Zarg the Overlo, Pirate King: He was smuggling men and woman across land and sea to sell them for high price. Menett encountered him on the seas, as his vessel attacked the scooner his wife was traveling on. When Menett's fathers ship joined the fray and Menett lead the men aboard, Zarg was forced to flee and losing a valuable cargo of slaves and the chance of a hefty ransom for the Thayian dignatory in the process. While he doesn't actively spend too much time searching for Menett; if he learns of his location he will try to pay him back.

Enemies:

Dwarven Hellpact Warlock. He hates Menett on multiple levels, from racial hated of all things elven, to a betrayer of the dark forces. He'll attempt to cause Menett all types of suffering a death when they run across each other.
A Dragonborn Fighter, perhaps Spellscared, that believes that martial power is the only true strength, and that both Menett and his wife are impure in their fighting techniques since they use divine and arcane magic respectively to augment their power.

Contacts:

Drow Paladin of Tempus. Menett met him on the field of battle. The Paladin still moves within Drow circles, but is happy to feed information to Menett to help fuel his god.
A tavern owner in Lyrabar, who took a liking to Menett when his parents brought him in. Has plenty of shady contacts and information that Menett hasn't pried into.
Human Lorekeeper (priest of Oghma), who sails the seas gathering information about the Sea of Fallen Stars. She spends most of her time among pirates, since more "legitimate" avenues of information have already been explored.
The dignitary from Thay Menett's wife was escorting when they first met.

Allies:

Cleric that married Menett and his wife.
