I always thought the regular fighter had nothing the other classes couldn't get.
So here's my attempt of giving them something other classes don't have. Also get rid of some stupidities

Class Skills
Climb(Str), Craft(Int), Handle Animal(Cha), Intimidate(Cha), Jump(Str), Spot(Wis) and Swim(Str)

A Fighter gains 2 skill points plus intelligence modifier. Quadruple amount for first level.

Fighter Hit Die d10

Range Manipulation (lvl 3)
You can strike two squares away with a one handed weapon albeit with a -4 penalty. You can also strike into an adjecent square with a reach weapon in the same manner

All Weapons (lvl 5)
You no longer take a penalty for using improvised weapons

Trained Blow (lvl 7)
Three times Per day you can double the damage for one strike of your weapon. You declare this before rolling for attack. If you score a critical hit then multiply the base numbers and add up.
Like this:
Redgar uses trained blow with his greatsword, he hits and does critical damage. H rolls 9 for damage now he multiplies it first for the critical 2x9 and then for the special ability 2x9
18+18 for 36 damage.

Improved Trained Blow (lvl 15)
You gain two more daily uses of Trained Blow and you now multiply the damage by 3

Dispelling Strike (lvl 9)
You must declare the use of this ability before rolling to attack. It can be used twice a day. If you hit the enemy is affected by dispel magic in additon to any other effects such as damage from the strike

Greater Dispelling Strike (lvl 17)
As Dispelling Strike, but it now counts as greater dispel magic instead of dispel magic. You can use it 3 times a day.

IF your trying to put this on par with Cleric, or Wizard then you need to make sure it has NO dead levels.
Try giving it SOME bonus feats. They always make a optimization monkey happy.

I agree with FFf about the feats. I'd keep the normal Fighter feat brogression while giving them some more feats which can match class features (eg: a Dispelling attack could be great as a mid-level feat, with a Greater version becoming available later on, as well as feats which can grant DR or other combat advantages).

Well I'm mostly looking at giving a little more unique stuff and putting it on par with the barbarian at least

Or, instead of the dispelling strike give it manueversat a stunted progression. (Like a Bard) it ending at 5th level manuevers.
Simple really.

What do you mean by a maneuver? I haven't found any in my books (All Core Complete adventurer and complete scoundrel +PHBII) Is it in of those or somewhere else?

It exists.

I don't have those books.
Its a singular book, but I honestly don't know what to say if you dont have them. :P
Prehaps a stunted cleric progression then?

I started 3.5 when 4.0 was already out. I just didn't like the stuff I heard about 4.0. So I started 3.5 when the 3.5 books were being sold out. I'm a new player.

You realize that a mounted fighter is now capable at level 20 of doing (1d10+50)x6 with a non-magical lance, or x8 on a crit? That's with barely any optimization (I used four feats, that's it), I think I can get it significantly higher without too much work.

Edit: Another reading of your rules suggests it may be instead x9/x11 without errata for lances, or even x9/x15 if someone is willing to play fast and loose.
