Alright, this is an honest question. I've ended up letting several DMs to allow me to do this (definitely for the funny), but I wanted to know what you all would rule. The question is this:

Would an unconscious sorcerer be considered a spell trigger item for the purpose of activating with UMD?

Absolutely not. Why would it? Aside from comedic effect.

I'm not really sure. As a rules question, clearly no. I might allow it at my table for the comedic value so long as everyone understood it was being allowed as a joke exception to the rules and was not going to be a standard use mechanic.

Yeah, comedic effect would be the only reason I'd allow it. He's not a wand. If you really, really stretched things (and bribed me with pizza and beer) I might allow you to use him as though he were an Intelligent Item.

I would allow you to use him as an improvised weapon regardless.

A normal sorceror, No, they may be magic, but they are not a "Device".

A Warforged Sorceror on the other hand...:smallamused:

The weird part is, while I certainly asked my DM out of the funny, several people I know now seem convinced that it would work that way normally.

But only if he's a gnome.

You're a barbarian, bard, cleric, fighter, paladin, ranger, rogue, or another sorceror and you're sorceror is particularly dim, you might be able to get away w/ using him as a simple weapon....

as a magic device, no.

But only if he's a gnome.

You've obviously never been an elf in a party with a half-giant.

This is a sorcerer we're talking about. Intelligence is not to be assumed.

Why? Because Sorcerers are Cha dependent and not Int?

No, no... Sorcerers are only tools in the figurative sense. :smallwink:

Don't be silly.

They're obviously spell completion items creatures.

.....are you saying that being a sorcerer makes you inherently prone to suggestions while asleep/unconscious....this adds much fun to my games!

Very, very true.

Weilding a wizard two-handedly=magic weapon!
"I know what you're thinking. "Did he cast six spells or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is an evocation specialist sorceror, the most powerful class in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?"

Evocation? Pah. You need orb spells. And Incantatrix.

Evocation sorcerer = desert eagle, as per quote. Neither is really all that useful, but both are flashy. An orb optimized wizard would be more like a gun that shoots shurikens and lightning.

No, an orb wizard is like a guided rocket-propelled laser chainsaw. That shoots shurikens and lightning. Oh, and the shurikens are made of lasers.

I could totally see a racial deity being able to UMD his sorcerers and favored souls.

And I would totally not abuse this for comedic effect in a game.

I can see this being a bad pick-up line.

"Hey baby, I'm a sorcerer. Let's see if you can handle using my magical device."

EHN!! INCORRECT! Dirty Harry uses a .44 Magnum, six shot cylinder, double action pistol...I know because I own two. A Desert Eagle is a .50 caliber semi-automatic, slide, single action pistol.

Now we only need a strong guy with enough CHA/UMD that can wield a warforged sorcerer. Or should we go with warforged scout sorcerer ?They are lighter.

"well as the slide has locked back, you are out of ammo..... so yeah, i'm feeling kinda lucky"

While you are correct about Mr Harry, the DE comes in various calibres - .357, .44 and .50, at the least. There's also a 9mm variant called the Baby Jericho, from memory.

.50 is the only one you hear about in movies or TV because it's the largest.

I'd totally allow it.

Stand back! I have a fully loaded sorcerer, and I'm not afraid to use it.

Hmm, can I use a homebrewed version of the two-wand weilder? Probably requires 2+ size on the sorcerer, but if I can get one sorcerer with reduce person and enlarge, or one each...hmmm...
