Any good turn based strat rpg's out there? For PC, DS, PS3, or Wii especially.
Customizable characters is a plus.

Well, lesse:

For PC there's always X-Com. If you go really ancient theres Missionforce: Cyberstorm (big stompy and completely customizable mecha).

GBA/DS: Lacking in customizable characters, but you've got the Final Fantasy Tactics games, the Fire Emblem games, and Luminous Arc on the T-RPG front.

Only one I can think of for the Wii is another Fire Emblem...

PS3 I have no idea...

PS3 has Disgaea 3, and is backwards-compatible with PS2, which means Disgaea 1 and 2. And various Super Robot Wars titles, if you don't mind the game being entirely in Moonspeak. Super Robot Wars OG and OG2 for the GBA are translated into English.

If you like tactical RPGs...

- Disgaea. Great mechanics, greater characters, and awesome humor. The originals are for PS2, so depending in your PS3 version you might have retrocompatibility and can play them. If not, the first one has been ported to DS, but it's lost a lot of the awesome voice acting. And the third one is a PS3 exclusive anyway, but I haven't been able to try it so I don't know how it compares.

Nippon Ichi software has done a lot more of these games, too. Look out for Makai Kingdom as well - it's also rather awesome.

- Seconding Final Fantasy Tactics. The one in DS is simple, but great fun, and has a lot of hours in it. Wouldn't recommend Luminous Arc, though.

- In GBA, maybe you could try Super Robot Wars Original Generations. It's a Fire Emblem-type, but with huge robots instead of knights, and special attacks and spirit focusing and such instead of spells.

EDIT: Goddamnit Tengu, don't ninja me!

I have most of these games actually but Xcom looks interesting.

Semi-turn based we have Valkria Chronicles for the PS3.

I believe there is a fire emblem game out for the Wii.

And there are plenty out there for the DS.

Well, if you told us what you have, it would be easier to come up with non-redundant suggestions, you know :smalltongue:

Here's a redundant suggestion...

But the Honorable Lord Ike (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWo-azI6eL0) is the Paragon of Manliness and Strategical Combat!

Shadow Dragon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IYnPP9kEhs&feature=related) comes out in not-Japan over the holiday season for Europe, next year :smallfrown: for America.

X-Com is not a strategy RPG, just a normal strategy game. Still turn-based, and still a great game nevertheless. Didn't get old in the slightest.

Jagged Alliance is a great game too, with many more RPG elements and still a lot of tactics. You hire mercenaries, each with their own unique quirks and personality, and lead them to overthrow a tyrant who seized control of a small but extremely important island (1st game) or an entire 3rd world country (2nd).

It's hard to keep track of. I have to leave for work ten minuets ago so I'll post a list later.

Maybe, battle for wesnoth? What do you mean by 'rpg' here. You got fantasy storyline, hero characters, stats progression, experience point, and such in battle for westnoth.

A bit more on the strategy than the RPG side (though still mixing both of them), but The Battle For Wesnoth shouldn't be missing on this list.
It is a really fun turn-based strategy game, with experience for all units, items and unique characters, tons upon tons of different campaigns... and, being open-source, it is available for free (http://www.wesnoth.org/). :smallwink:

Not to be used by people who get fits of anger over poor dice rolls under any circumstances though. :smalleek:

EDIT: Wow, ninja'd... talk about eerie coincidence. :smalleek:

What he said. *mumble* brother taking my suggestions *grumble*
Also? The GBA ones (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BsPSOQA6tY&feature=related), since you can play them on the DS.
*sigh* if only I knew some stuff out side of Nintendo... :smallfrown::smallbiggrin:

Fallout Tactics. More RPG than normal, it's incredibly fun. You can also play as either Turn-based, or real-time depending on your preference and the situation at the moment.

Depending on what you're fighting, real-time Fallout Tactics can get you killed a lot faster. The robots that you fight later are large pains, as most conventional weapons are almost useless.

Jagged Alliance 2 if you buy it make sure to get the fan made 1.13 patch. Maybe best turnbased ever.

Or Return to Krondor. Very good. Story is written by fantasy author Raymond E. Feist. Pretty good RPG a bit short but nice roundbased combat.

Snipers using aimed shots at the eyes still rule vs. bots. But I prefer turn-based where I can stand-shoot-crouch. Especially if I'm stand-shoot-crouching with a .50 cal. Or a rocket launcher.

Real-time is most useful in missions with a vehicle. APC, Tank, Raider Buggy. The Humvee is a bit fragile.

a simple but fun one is Shinning Force, came out for Sega Genesis, but re-made for GBA, and even rarer (and I have) Sega Smash Pack 2 for pc.

Not that hard, simple, but cheap and I had fun

Question. Which X-com should I be getting, there's like a dozen of them.

ninja_penguin

And if X-Com is your thing, you may or may not like Silent Storm for the PC. It's a turn based squad shooter, set in achronistictacular WWII. I liked the game a lot, with two caveats:

1. Turn off the voice acting. It's really horrible.

and plot related tip:

2. Panzerkliens, Nazi futuristic war-mecha, are armored suits. they're also pretty close to being ludicrously broken, but they're almost the only thing that can take out other panzerkleins.

Oh, and skip on it's psudo-sequal of Hammer and Sickle, or something like that. You practically need a walkthrough to avoid being automatically sent to the 'world ends' bad ending mission.

Edit- RE: X-COM. You want UFO defense for sure, and I've heard good things about Terror from the Deep. Mixed things I've heard about apocalypse, and I've heard to avoid Interceptor and Enforcer like the plague. Please note that I've only played UFO defense, so the rest of my suggestions is just what I've heard or read as reviews.

UFO Defence (also known as Enemy Unknown), most definitely.
Terror from the Deep is basically the same game again, with switched graphics, a somewhat different mood (basically, UFO Defence is X-Files, TftD is Call of Cthulhu) and the difficulty level shooting through the roof so badly it destroys Yuggoth on its way to the unknown reaches of the Universe.
So, definitely get UFO Defence before you get TftD, because TftD will eat you alive otherwise. :smallwink:

I liked Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tactics_Ogre:_The_Knight_of_Lodis) for GBA, but I was lucky to find it years ago. I've also heard that Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tactics_Ogre) is good, but it's even older and I never played it.

As for more recent stuff, Jeanne d'Arc (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeanne_d%27Arc_(video_game)) is enjoyable, but that's on PSP.

n-ing Super Robot Taisen/Wars and Nippon Ichi in general. Regarding NIS, I warn you that the Disgaea and Phantom games(Phantom Brave, Makai Kingdom) play a little differently. Makai Kingdom is actually halfway between the Disgaea and Phantom Brave styles.

Soul Nomad and the World Eaters, on the other hand, is an entirely different style from any other NIS game, so be warned.

Soul Nomad special attacks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-mq2Oyjg5s)

Disgaea 2 attacks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcWA_vCBMPQ)

Phantom Brave special attacks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_o_pc738hg). Yes, they were beating the crap outta each other with trees, boxes, logs, mine carts, pumpkins, and such. In Phantom Brave, EVERYTHING can be an Infinity Plus One Sword. (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/InfinityPlusOneSword)

Super Robot Taisen Original Generation 2 Japanese PV with attacks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cy88mVFxGcE)

Super Robot Wars W PV (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1bk8cZPaT8). Yes, that's Voltron in there. Just so you know, DS' are region-free, so importing and playing requires no extra work other than having it shipped.

I should warn you, however, that NIS games are very grind-friendly. Grinding may not be necessary to beat the games, but you need it to get the most out them. Levels tend to top out in the thousands for the hidden bosses, and the levels of the strongest ones are in fact, OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAAND.
