I shall second the vote for Giant. You don't see giant's used well as important adversaries. They're usually a mid-level antagonist, used once or twice, & then discarded for the rest of the campaign. I'd like to see a more formidable giant villain, rather than another XP-kleenex.

Firbolg accepted and tabulated.

Firbolg

http://www.iwozhere.com/SRD/images/88268_620_52.jpg
Usually neutral giants who live in remote hills, forests or mountains, building great wooden structures to hose themselves, firbolg giants are among the most intelligent of giantkind. Preferring a hunter-gatherer lifestyle, they live with the land and treat other sentient beings as equals. Many other giant races dislike them.

afroakuma
2008-11-09, 06:12 PM
Heliomance, I'll allow it this time, but in the future, write-ins will only be accepted if you provide the creature's name and source.

Geriviar

http://nightmare.org/dnd/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=11610&g2_serialNumber=1
Geriviars are monstrous giants that inhabit desolations. Preferring isolation and ruggedness, geriviars shun company and abhor construction. Not only to they distrust all other living things, they outright loathe structures of any kind and take pains to reduce them to rubble. Their single-minded fixation on goals and unrelenting hatred of buildings makes them living siege engines, if someone can be found who can appeal to their desires.

Rich Burlew seems to have a thing for Firebolgs, judging from his entry on the Polymorph spell. Whether it's a good or bad thing, I can't tell. Yeah, I hate firebolgs. They're boring. They don't even have a fire or a bolg subtype!

As for the Ogre Mage, you should just work with it, Afro. It won, fair & square, & I'm sure you can do something great with it. I didn't vote for it, but I didn't vote against it either. Perhaps your take on this villain will convince some DM to give Oni [sic] Mages a try.

That "evil flower of love" was far too awesome to be stupid.

In other news: I vote bard. Further, I vote him/her to play a huge church organ while wearing a cape and cloak. The image of an ogre mage playing organ in a giant, gothic cathedral, providing bonuses to the ogre chorus standing between it and the PCs would have to made out of win.

Unfortunately, it'll prolly lose to sorcerer...

More importantly, it would lose to Nordic war skald as the thematic selection. That's probably the direction I'd first look to take an ogre mage bard.

But you never know.

And yes, I personally liked the flower. I was only pointing out to those who think little of the ogre mage how preposterous the earlier premise sounded before the published villain arrived.

I can imagine a ogre mage druid reaching what he believes to be enlightenment. He now tries to destroy everything because he believes "from the ashes nature will spring anew" (think forest fires) . Sorry if this is ahead of time, this is my first time voting. Please tell me if I did something wrong. Also a druid villian would be awesome to DM.

Sorceror is too obvious to me, and I don't know what it would do with that +10 Strength bonus. Still needs to be a casting class though (it is an Ogre Mage after all). Cleric is probably the most obvious choice, but I'd like to see a villainous Bard. Especially one that's an ogre.

afro does have a point, guys. Absurdity is fun and all, but there comes a point where it crosses the line of "interesting, very non-traditional blend" and goes into "mix of random parts that don't mesh well together".

I mean, don't get me wrong, afro and Zeta both are really talented and can pull amazing stuff off - the stuff they've been putting out is a great testament to that, no lie - but if things are too bizarre, then even they might not be able to avoid just making a villain that feels like it's a hodgepodge of abilities someone wanted to throw together for no reason.

I can certainly do a ninja. What irritates me is that this class vote has been almost all about the "lulz," to the point that what might be a legitimate choice has become the farce standardbearer (and is of my own personal design, therefore being something of an insult) in a winning battle against what has been touted as an actual reasoned choice.

All those of you who are screwing with it because you can, or you don't care? Don't tell me. I don't want to know. It's insulting to have to read those kind of remarks. I like that we can have interesting and funny voting, and still get something out of it, but if you've actively decided not to make a positive contribution, there's no need to advertise that.

There is no such thing as a serious choice, only a serious decision, if that makes and sense. I do want this to be a fun contest, I just don't like petty sabotage.

To be fair, I think petty sabotage is not really an appreciable phenomenon here or on other VUAx threads. In the one instance where someone actually threatened such a thing, I believe that they were probably joking. At most, it may have been an idle threat. I agree that farcical voting may be an issue. And it does seem to the person who has to take those votes & make something out of them that it's a spiteful, vicious joke. But i think most voters just wanna see talented creators like you take something strange & make it beautiful.

Could you make a brilliant villain out of an Succubus/Sorcerer7/ChaoticEvil/Greed? Sure. But many could do something similar, if not quite as well. The books tell you how, for the most part. People come to you to see someone who can take an OgreMage/Ninja9/LawfulGood/Insanity & make it sing. They come to threads like ours to see someone make a monster that they can use, one that's so unusual & so damn cool that their players will just flip when they have to fight it. They are here for a show, & like it or not, we're here to give 'em one. :smallwink:

I'm not voting on CR yet, but as the votes are heading toward CR 17 at the moment I feel the need to point out that, if I recall correctly, level 17 is the level where ninth-level dramatically-changing-the-world spells become available to the party. afroakuma

Well since this is a villain, I'm going to vote for LAWFUL EVIL.

There's a difference between assassin's and ninja's besides one being British and the other Japanese... I just can't seem to think of it at the moment.:smalltongue:

Meh, I guess it's just a personal thing. Being an otaku I've seen countless samurai (who I use, along with paladin's as my lawful guiding point) express their dislike of ninja's and their dishonourable ways.

Anyway, before this turns into an alignment battle I'll just accept that if an ogre magi can be a ninja in the first place then New Guinea be damned if he can't be lawful if he wants to. Yes, my views are, indeed, odd and make small children fall over.

Historical ninja were incredibly lawful as a rule.

An assassins are a Middle-Eastern concept (hashashin) originally.

But yes, samurai would have found ninja dishonorable.

because they assassinated people:smalltongue:

Because they were infiltrators and spies who didn't swear loyalty. Because they fought covertly.

Both samurai and ninja were lawful; both followed their own code. Their codes just tended to conflict.

Exactly; there was no way you could get to be a high-ranking warrior of any sort in feudal Japan unless you swore absolute allegiance to your lord--it just didn't happen to include any loyalty to those whom you were supposed to assassinate.

Of course, if you were ordered to kill someone you already owed allegiance to, that could cause some conflicts of duty (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giri_(Japanese))...

The votes have been counted, and the winning alignment is Lawful Evil!

Finally, this obscured ogre mage needs its Primary Motivation!

I want him to be a power-hungry megalomaniac, sitting in the shadows pulling the strings of minions.

I like either Greed or Hunger (for Power).

IF there's a more appropriate motivation then I choose that.

I'm glad Lawful Evil won, as Lawful Good would've just been dumb. You really gotta ban good alignments for the VUAV, Afro. VUAM can get away with Good every once in a while, but the "villain" has some pretty clear connotations, implying Neutral at best. Good antagonists are just allies that you haven't befriended yet.

As for my vote, I'd like to see a story based on Revenge.

I'm going with punch clock villainy because that just seems to work for the slightly absurd ogre ninja.

paddyfool
2008-11-13, 08:35 AM
There's no reason this has to be absurd - I mean, the spell-like abilities of an Ogre Mage seem to synergise pretty well with ninja abilities to me (particularly change shape, invisibility, darkness, gaseous form and charm person), not to mention the ability to fly. It's a pity about the lack of stealthy class skills from the racial hit die, but there are ways around that.

And I'm going for... Revenge. A lot of the others don't seem like sufficient motivation for an Ogre Mage to undergo extensive ninja training.
