View Full Version : [Template] Through Eyes of Indigo

Delirium-Kissed
Indigo, the deep and mysterious blue, has long been associated with madness and unspeakable mysteries. Mages skilled in the prismatic spells know that their indigo magic can shatter lesser minds, and art throughout the ages has used indigo halos to indicate both madness and secret knowledge in their subjects. Those few poor souls who worship madness itself, personifying it as Delirium, depict their imagined goddess as having a luminous indigo eye. Some creatures, said to have been kissed by Delirium herself while in the womb, revel in their madness, living constantly in a world of mad dreams–and these creatures are always marked by indigo. One eye a luminous blue, the other a pale emerald green, these Delirium-kissed see the world through shattered eyes.

Creating a Delirium-Kissed
Delirium-Kissed is an inherited template that can be added to any non-mindless creature.

Size and Type
Creature gains the psionic subtype. Size remains unchanged.

Attacks
A Delirium-Kissed retains all attack forms of the base creature, and gains no additional attacks.

Special Attacks
A Delirium-Kissed retains all the special attacks of the base creature and also gains the following attacks.

Eyes of Indigo (Ps)
As a standard action, a Delirium-Kissed may expend its psionic focus to cause one of its eyes to glow a brilliant indigo, like a supernova of the mind. This grants it a gaze attack with a range of 15 ft. for the following round. All creatures caught in the gaze attack must make a Will save, DC 10 plus ½ the Delirium-Kissed’s HD plus the Delirium-Kissed’s Cha modifier, or take 1d3 points of Cha damage. A creature reduced to 0 Cha by this ability must make a second Will save or go mad, as the power insanity. When the Delirium-Kissed expends its psionic focus, it may also spend an amount of power points less than or equal to its manifester level. For every two power points spent, the Delirium-Kissed gains the gaze attack for an additional round, and for every four power points spent, the damage dealt by the gaze attack increases by 1. If at least 5 power points were spent, the range of the gaze attack increases to 30 ft., and if at least 10 power points were spent, its range increases to 60 ft. This is a mind-affecting ability.

Surge of Madness (Ps)
Whenever a Delirium-Kissed manifests a power, it may choose to take an amount of Wisdom burn of up to half its manifester level. If it does, the power's DC is increased by 1 for every point of burn taken.

Special Qualities
A Delirium-Kissed retains all the special qualities of the base creature and also gains the following qualities.

Naturally Psionic (Ex)
Delirium-Kissed gain 4 bonus power points at 1st level.

Revel in Madness (Su)
Passion and delirium flows through the mind of a Delirium-Kissed like a never-ceasing tide. A Delirium-Kissed uses its Cha score in place of any other mental scores as its spellcasting, manifesting, or similar stat.

Unbidden Urges (Ex)
A Delirium-Kissed is not completely in control of itself. When stressed, they may enter depths of truly random madness. At the beginning of each round of combat, there is a 10% chance that the Delirium-Kissed is confused, as the spell, for that round. However, use the following table to determine what random action the Delirium-Kissed performs, rather than that of the confusion spell.

{table="head"]d%|Behavior
1-20|Gain psionic focus and use eyes of indigo ability against nearest creature.
21-30|Act normally.
31-50|Do nothing but babble incoherently.
51-70|Withdraw from melee or retreat.
71-100|Attack nearest creature.
[/table]

World of Mad Dreams (Su)
A Delirium-Kissed lives in a imagined reality more often than not, and attempts to penetrate its mind are sometimes subsumed into this fantasy. Whenever a Delirium-Kissed fails its save against a mind-affecting ability, there is a 10% chance the Delirium-Kissed is treated as if it had made its save. This percentage increases by 5% for every two points of Cha bonus the Delirium-Kissed has. In addition, a Delirium-Kissed is completely immune to effects such as confusion or insanity that cause madness–the Delirium-Kissed’s is owned wholly by her own madness, with room for no other.

Abilities
Increase from the base creature as follows: Wis -4, Cha +4.

Challenge Rating
As base creature plus 1

Alignment
Always Chaotic

Level Adjustment
+1

Alex Crowley, known as the mad seer, was born touched by the indigo caress of Delirium. He spent most of his life in a small number of padded rooms, ranting his insane truths and insights to any willing to hear them. However, he has recently escaped his latest asylum, and now lives on the streets, selling his talents to make enough money to eat. If pressed into combat, he will fight viciously, using his eyes of indigo ability, his psionic power, and what little equipment he has been able to steal. If a band of adventurers is willing to tolerate his baroque habits and pay what he asks, they might find a good source of information or help. The benefits of Alex’s inertial armor power are included in his stat block above, as he keeps it almost constantly manifested out of paranoia.

Eyes of Indigo (Ps)
As a standard action, Alex may expend his psionic focus to cause his left eye to glow a brilliant indigo. This grants hima gaze attack with a range of 15 ft. for the following round. All creatures caught in the gaze attack must make a DC 17 Will save or take 1d3 points of Cha damage. A creature reduced to 0 Cha by this ability must make a second Will save or go mad, as the power insanity. When Alex expends his psionic focus, he may also spend up to 5 power points. For every two power points spent, Alex gains the gaze attack for an additional round, and for every four power points spent, the damage dealt by the gaze attack increases by 1. If at least 5 power points were spent, the range of the gaze attack increases to 30 ft. This is a mind-affecting ability.

Surge of Madness (Ps)
Whenever Alex manifests a power, he may choose to take up to 2 points of Wisdom burn. If he does, the power's DC is increased by 1 for every point of burn taken.

Naturally Psionic (Ex)
Alex has 4 additional racial power points.

Revel in Madness (Su)
Alex uses his Cha score in place of his Int score as his manifesting stat.

Unbidden Urges (Ex)
At the beginning of each round of combat, there is a 10% chance that Alex is confused, as the spell, for that round. However, use the above table to determine what random action the Alex performs, rather than that of the confusion spell.

World of Mad Dreams (Su)
Whenever Alex fails his save against a mind-affecting ability, there is a 20% chance he is treated as if it had made his save. In addition, Alex is completely immune to effects such as confusion or insanity that cause madness.

That doesn't include Will saves, right?

I'd suggest replacing it with this table, which matches the current Confusion layout more.

This translates into making a Charisma check at DC 14.

The template looks like a good psionic one, but there isn't as much mystery to it as I'd like.

Heh, I like the name for the sample creature.

Nope, only things like spellcasting, manifesting, and suchlike. However, letting them replace Will saves with Cha might be interesting.

Hadn't thought of it that way. Perhaps I'll change it to let you use Cha in place of Wis for will saves.

Yeah, found it hard to work the mystery aspect to it. I was thinking of some sort of ability to learn things from voices in your heads, might add that in.

I wouldn't recommend it. That would render the Wisdom penalty a moot point; the only things it would affect then would be skills & Wisdom drain.

Good point. Maybe put a limit on it, or require expending psionic focus?

Eh, probably too complicated. I'd say keep it like that.
