27 Tal Aladon
Love him or hate him, you certainly can't ignore him... And that's just how Tal Aladon likes it. The ex-pirate, multimillionaire, business baron, entertainment magnate and man about town is an attention addict. Whether he's yelling at the referuts at a Buccaneers game, handing out free passes to Pirate World in front of a new Six Ninjas park, or spending a day managing a Frost Queen ice cream shop after saying he wouldn't trust baseball's commissioner to do the same, he's always front and center in the public eye...

Captain Tal Aladon spent four years as what he refers to as a "maritime acquisition expert." He was unique among his peers in that he invested a significant portion of his wealth into an extensive series of land bound contacts, informants, and snitches that let him cherry pick the most lucrative "acquisitions," leaving the lesser targets to the "mere pirates."
Unfortunately for Tal, this success made him a target for those interested in the security of the shipping lanes. After a bad tip from several members of his organization, Tal's ship was set upon by four ships of the king's navy. While he emerged from the ambush with his life, his ship was no longer seaworthy, his crew was battered, and his trusted network could no longer be trusted.
Instead of acquiring a new ship and putting back out to sea, Aladon took a new path. He and his crew paid visits to each of the contacts that led him into the ambush. Upon reassembling his information network, he set them to finding legitimate business opportunities. He has since built a massive fortune acquiring down on their luck companies and turning them into profit, whether by improving their methods, selling off their assets, or simply eliminating competition for another of his properties.
During this time, Aladon remade his image. He convinced a noble to intervene on his behalf before the king, reducing Tal's sentence for piracy to a year of imprisonment and a significant fine. He cleaned up his crew and retrained them to handle administrative duties. He distanced himself from any mention of his previous exploits, and most importantly, upon gaining his release, he made a number of public appearances reinforcing his image as a respectable businessman.
Circumstances, however, caused him to reverse course on this public relations campaign. Upon the completion of his purchase of a downtrodden "Fireballers" team known as the Pilots, King George was heard to say, "My Royals will not be beaten by that pirate." The good captain took the attention garnered by the king's vitriol and ran with it. He renamed the team the Pirates and built them a state of the art stadium in the booming metropolis of Lost Cutlass. This was followed by a series of Pirate themed entertainment venues: "Pirate Land" and "Pirate World" theme parks, a Buccaneers football team, and even his own Lost Cutlass casino, the Treasure Island.

Tal Aladon is egotistical, reckless, maddeningly smug, highly opinionated, and not entirely honest. He is also charming enough that anyone he meets usually forgives the rest. He took up piracy more because it fit his personality than any real conviction for it -- and when the risk began to outweigh the rewards, he found other, safer means of lining his coffers. He is intensely curious, always looking for the next neat gadget, magic item, or person that can engage his interest. He finds the discovery more appealing than the thing itself, discarding old items for anything new and interesting. His main talent in business is taking what others have discarded or dismissed and finding a new way to use it... and rubbing it in their faces.

Two items stand out in the success of Tal Aladon.

The Rod of Constant Motion
This rod appears to be an Immovable Rod, and acts as such except as noted:
Once activated, moving the rod 10 ft/round requires a DC 38 Strength check. Once the primary button is pressed, a second button is activated on the opposite end of the rod. When this second button is pressed, the rod moves at a constant speed of 20 ft/round in the direction of the flat side of the bar. Pressing the button again reverts it to its immovable behavior and allows the first button to be pressed again. Stopping the bar while it is moving requires a DC 40 Strength check, however changing its direction only requires a DC 14 Strength check.
The bar can lift 1000 lbs of material, though multiple bars can be used to move larger loads.

/moderate transmutation; CL 12th; Craft Rod, levitate, mage hand; Price 10,000 gp

These rods of motion are the basis behind many of the rides at the Pirate Land and Pirate World theme parks. They are usually inserted in varying numbers into clockwork type mechanisms that guide them in whatever path the ride requires. They have also been used in automatic plows, lighthouses, and even some horseless carraiges.

Arcane Tablet
This matched set of clay or sandstone tablets magically transfers anything scribed on one tablet to the other almost instantaneously. This can transfer any words or images, but it cannot be used to transfer scrolls, or to transfer spells into a spellbook. This transfer works across any distance, but cannot cross a planar border.

Light Evocation; CL 7th; Craft Wondrous Item, sending; Price 6,000 gp per pair.

These tablets allowed Aladon to contact his land bound contacts from his ship, granting him huge advantages over competitors. However, he was forced to carry around dozens of tablets, keeping track of which belonged to whom. And so, Tal set his research department to simplifying the system.

Arcane Tablet, Modified
Instead of being created as matched sets, these tablets can be "programmed" to access multiple other tablets. Thus one tablet owner can publish content, allowing any other tablet that has been set to recieve the "site" access to read it.

Light Evocation; CL 9th; Craft Wondrous Item, sending; Price 4,000 gp.

It was the use of one of these tablets snuck into the prison that allowed Aladon to continue to build his operation while incarcerated.
Tal has since had thousands of these tablets produced and has sold them at a loss, believing he can make up the difference by selling content. To do so, he has purchased and consolidated several publishing companies for their properties, discarding most of the ink and paper equipment they may have.

Lackey acts as both Tal Aladon's personal assistant and chief accountant. He is responsible for making sure Tal's unpredictability doesn't adversely affect the business. He keeps track of meetings, promises and all the other details that can elude his boss. As annoyed as he may be by Tal's behavior, (and being called Lackey... he does have a name after all) he knows it is Aladon's acumen, charisma, and luck that keep his paydays as large as they are.
