Greetings, my friends.

Now, I have a problem. And first, let me state that this is not a monumental problem. It is not even a problem. More of an annoyance. By helping me, you will have done no more than set in motion a chain of events that will make me a very happy Moon Called.

You see, my friend, Tyori, is holding a contest.

I must geuss the identity of a monster (the eyes lurking around in this page (http://tyori.deviantart.com/art/MANGA-PG2-SUPER-WIP-102674679)of her new manga), a fill in the blanks, so to speak. And if I do, I get a cool chibi drawn by her. And she's a kick-ass artist. So, help me, please?

Two words. First word is Demon. Second word is six letters long and the fifth letter is "e".

DEMON M _ _ _ E _

Hints:

Oh, and the hints I've gotten:
It's not from a manga, anime, or anything published
It's not from Western Lore (whut?)
It's an english word
It's humaniod, with four limbs, and usualy walks on two legs
It's sort of animal-ish (whut?)
It's not a name
It has nothing to do with rape (which is amazing, considering the source)
Here's the first page (http://tyori.deviantart.com/art/Unnamed-Manga-Pg1-101933148)

Have fun.

Possibilities based on crossword cheating program:

Badger
Barber
Beaver
Bucket
Caller
Canoes

...

Am I right in supposing you were playing Hang Man? That'd really help out the search on account that you could rule out every other word with additional 'e's etc.

...

Maiden...

Also, tell this person that it's spelt 'ridiculous'.

... Hunter?

...Damn you PZ, you beat me to the punch with the crossword thing.

Please tell her 'ridiculous' has no 'e' in it, if you don't mind. *Spelling Nazi*

Pretty much simmaler to Hang Man, only one e in the second word. No idea about the other letters.

It's an english word

Hope that helps. I've geussed everything I can think of.

Theoretically speaking, I reckon there's quite a few different words that could fit the bill there, given that there is no actual specification on this 'monster'. Would it be in the dictionary? Is it an actual monster? Would it be in the monsterous manual?

Seems like you could try for quite some time and get nowhere.

No clue, no clue, and probably not.

But I've got three people helping me. Throw anything out. The monkeys with typewriters making Shakespeare prove that one of us has a chance to guess it.

How about Demon Monkey?

Actualy, I tried that one. Nope.

First thing that strikes me: that last letter's an R.

Employing this (http://hangman.doncolton.com/) tool (if this is in fact a hangman puzzle) offers 1738 results for ____E_. Adding an R to the end narrows that to 549.

There needs to be one more vowel, for certain. That vowel is most likely an A.

A___ER: 14
_A__ER: 205
__A_ER: 53
___AER: 0

The A is most likely in the second position.

With an A in the second position, another vowel (I or U) can only come immediately after the A (or before the E in the case of the I.) Running those quickly:

_AI_ER: 17
_AU_ER: 18 (but unless this thing's a saucer, none of these results is reasonable, so effectively 0.)
_A_IER: 19 (again, none are reasonable)

Okay, so if there were to be a third vowel, I would be it. However, the reasonable word list resulting is: "baiter, jailer, kaiser" and Kaiser is not an English word. It is also technically a proper noun. So if there is to be a third vowel, the only options are baiter and jailer.

What if there is no third vowel?

Now we have 149 matches. The most common remaining letter is L, so we'll run that.

LA__ER: 13 (lasher, lather, lawyer)
_AL_ER: 22 (calver, talker, walker)
_A_LER: 15 (bawler)

As you can see, there are only three decent options for the best of them. Eliminating L leaves 90, and gives us T as the next most common:

TA__ER: 7 (tagger, tapper, tasker)
_AT_ER: 6 (bather, father)
_A_TER: 11 (caster, paster, wafter, waster)

A few options. Eliminating T leaves 55 matches, with S as the next most common:

SA__ER: 4 (sapper)
_AS_ER: 12 (basher, basker, gasher, washer)
_A_SER: 2 (no good results)

And removing S leaves only 34.

Now, of these remaining 34, few if any are good options. You can run through this list quickly to see if any seem likely to you.

What if a letter repeats?

Then my method is only so much beef stew. :smallfrown:

That utility does work for repetition, however.

No relevance from previous pages?

Well, out of all of AfroAkuma's suggested words, my vote's for Lawyer.

Was kind of wondering that myself...

Seems to me that this little guessing game is basically an exercise in futility. There's not enough info/clues. If we do get it, it'll just be a lucky guess.

Did this ever get resolved, Moon_Called?

Mr. Moon

Actually, it did just yesterday.

I managed to figure out that it started with an M (read, forced one of the people Tyori told into telling me), which narrowed things down a fair amount.

Turns out, it's a demon monkey.
And now I get an awesome-sauce sketch drawn of Moon Called.

Thanks for the help everyone!

Definitely should have said something like folktales or mythology rather than lore. Since lore in and of itself is something that monkeys entered into in the West due to trade.

Hit her with a spoon for that badly phrased clue.
