Is Bozzak a half-orc, or pure orc?
He has the elegible intelligence of a half-orc but when I looked closely I noticed he was muuuuuch taller than Haley. Is he just a tall half-orc or a pure orc?

I'm going to bet on Half-Orc. Haley was always short compared to Thog and Roy.

He doesn't seem to mind the light too much. My vote's for Half-Orc.

This thread is incredibly racist. -2 intelligence isn't that bad.

EDIT:
Don't know where you got the height thing from. The chief in this comic (7th panel for comparison) (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0553.html) is just as tall as Elan.

Orcs are an other, clearer (what I mean here is having more saturation) shade of green. (I know, it's wrong to distinguish races by skin colours, but hey!) Bozzok is more like Thog then the chief.

Orcs and half-orcs both have the same Int penalty. The difference between full and half orcs, stat-wise, is that full orcs are even stronger (+4 instead of +2), but less wise (-2 instead of no penalty). Both have -2 Int, -2 Cha.

the two orc subraces of Faerun also vary somewhat from the norm.

The Gray Orc has +2 Wisdom Bonus instead of penalty
The Orog has no INT penalty, and a +2 CHA bonus.

I'd say the fact that he's living in a human city makes it more likely he's a half-orc. Sure, nothing prevents an orc from doing so, but orcs living among humans are exceptions, and half-orcs among humans are normal.

I'm gonna say half-orc. He seems to be pretty intelligent, enough to be smart enough to trap Haley in a flank, as well as being head of a criminal organization.

it is not INT but WIS that is the issue- common orcs have a penalty, half-orcs don't.

The only difference between full and half orc is wisdom, not intelligence, so this is not the point.

Anyway both races are mechanically capable of 16 Int at first level, which is certainly enough to flank someone. :smalltongue:

Game mechanics aside, I think a half-orc fits better flavor-wise.

I think realising that flanking is good rather depends on WIS.

Considering even animals with their intelligence scores can grasp the concept....yeah.

I have had many an argument on how dumb it is that 8 int despite being four times smarter than wolves somehow makes you so incredibly stupid in dnd and novels that you'd fall for things no wolf ever would.

I think not. The orc Chief and that ninja half orc (and her mother, in the flash back) all have the same skin color here http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0555.html . Rich doesn't use color to differentiate orcs and half-orcs in this comic, I think.

I'd agree with the flavor-wise comment. Given how he elects to make a point of Therkla being "smarter" (as a qualitative generalization, not just wisdom or int scores) and more well spoken specifically due to being half-orc, I feel it's likely Bozzok has a similar explination.

http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0555.html

I wonder if they're siblings? It's also implied orc-human unions are not common, and Azure City and Greysky are not that far apart. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0531.html) I'd go as far as to postulate that the family is from Azure City or thereabouts, given the blue background of Therkla's flashback and the blue clothing of her parents, and Bozzok left because that isn't exactly a good place to be a theif.

Fine. But the same orcs a little earlier are just how I said (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0551.html): RGB=(6FB588), while Thog and Therkal are usually RGB(#7FAE8B).

So I guess the Giant is a little inconsistent and that's all. :(

Or maybe some Orcs are goth.

Half-Orc. Purebred (for lack of a funnier term) Orcs do not have the patience to be a rogue.

hamishspence

still, while rare some might exist. An orc who wants to "get along" in the city is unusual enough- picking a stealthy class isn't necessarily that much more unusual. The more thuggish kind of Rogue seems quite appropiate for an orc.

I'm inclined to say Half-orc though.

I'd say full orc, because of the teeth. When the full orcs on the island talk we see both their upper and lower teeth, like with Bozzak, but when Therkla talks we only see her bottom teeth.

That's nice spot, but Thog is a half orc, and his upper teeth are also visible. Maybe it's male/female thing, not orc/halforc thing.

You might be on to something, but it seems that the amount of teeth is more or less random.

Look at this female orc talking at the end of this strip (#552) (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0552.html), alongside a male orc. The male has 4 fangs (upper and lower) visible, the female only 2 (lower).

And now, look at Therkla's mother (who is a full orc) at the end of strip #555 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0555.html): Four obvious fangs.

So, whether an orc or half-orc has two or four fangs appears to be random.

Just my 2 eurocent!

So looks like it's just personal thing, like Asian elephants.:smallwink:

on't know about Asian elephants, but some Mastodon species do have a gender split for number of tusks in upper and lower jaw- male has two in both, female, two in upper jaw only.

actually so far he's spent most of his time (if not all of it) in the comic indoors. And that one time outside the sky looked grey (hence the name Greysky:smalltongue:)

compare Therkla to the tribe cheiften (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0555.html) and they should have the same skin tone:smallconfused:

Just to end the colour argument.

The Chief:
Hue:94
Sat:77
Lum:137

Therkla
Hue:92
Sat:69
Lum:154

So they are different.
However, Therkla's mom, a full blooded Orc, has the same skin tone as her daughter.

Also:

Bozzak
Hue:90
Sat:54
Lum:142

Random female Orc: Same as the chief.
