View Full Version : I hate shopping.

So...as most of you know, today was Black Friday....a fun, insane day of shopping for those of us crazy enough to do it. I usually rather enjoy the day and have a lot of fun...this year, however, things were incredibly annoying.

I stayed up all night, because that's what I do, so we left around 3:45am to go to Herberger's. Herbergers went very well, we got there around 4, had gotten all of our things and were out the door by 4:20.

Then....Walmart. *headdesk* So...one of the major things I was wanting to get at Walmart was the vsmile pocket for our grandson. If you're familiar with Black Friday at Walmart, you will know that all of the 'doorbuster' items are out on the floor early, but the pallets are wrapped in black plastic and guarded by employees. They give you a map of where in the store the item you want is.

My mother went to electronics and the gps's....I'm glad I wasn't over there, apparently one girl got stuck and knocked into and split her head open on a shelving unit, and this other guy had his wrist broken by another customer. Yes...electronics was not a fun area. The really annoying aspect of electronics, is that, since it is in the back of the store, everyone that has gotten a cart at the front of the store realizes that there is no way that they will be able to get through at the back with it. Then, they abandon their carts, leading to the middle of the store being completely blocked with carts, like....every aisle.

Anyway...I went to where the v-smile pocket was supposed to be being unveiled in 20 minutes. It was not there. They had put out the wrong product and were supposedly finding them and going to get them out. There were quite a few of us looking for them. We waited, and waited, talked to something like 10 different associates over the course of the morning. I wandered a bit, getting other things, checking back every 5 mins or so to see if we'd found out anything. Finally....at 5:40, we learn that they had put them out at a different area of the store and they were all gone. AND that they had only found about 20 of them, when they were supposed to have a couple hundred. Suffice it to say...I was pissed. I actually went and found a manager and bitched about it, which is something I never do. She's supposedly going to get back to me and hopefully find it, but grrr.. Then, when we were checking out, they wouldn't match competitors prices. Now, they've been advertising this for ages, saying that they even match other black friday deals, etc. But apparently...not movies. An exemption that is mentioned nowhere in their ad, their radio announcements, or their website. So my plan of not having to get any movies at Target or Best Buy fell through, and annoyed me further. I did still get a lot of things I needed there though.

Next was JC Penney, which was rather fun. I got some cute clothes, some things for Zeb, a new pair of shoes, presents for some people...it was much more nicelier and relaxed.

It is now...8am, a time when most normal people might be considering getting up. And we are on our way to Shopko. Which wasn't bad, although my mom was starting to get very tired and grumpy. Most of the stuff we wanted there was sold out, but ah well, we got fluffy blankets, and who isn't cheered by fluffy blankets.

From Shopko, we head to Target, which wasn't too busy at all anymore, and was out of a lot of stuff. They had cheap movies though.

Then...yay...breakfast break =D Then we head to Herbergers again. We aren't there very long, just had to pick up a couple things we missed in our whirlwind 20 mins there at 4am, but I got a fantastic jacket.

Now it is a little after 11, the time when I normally bow out, along with my mom, grandma and cousin, leaving my aunt to shop by herself for the rest of the day. We're crazy, she's insane. Anyway, mom and grandma leave, cousin had left at 8...but, I, being nice because my aunt had hurt her foot and isn't supposed to be driving with it, say that I will help her finish her shopping.

We're getting to the end of the 'doorbuster' hours, so each time we go in a new store, we have to start with her begging them to still give her the prices, even though it's noon. This makes the next several stores very hectic with lots of rushing to meet deadlines. We go to Menards, Toys R' Us, K-Mart, Runnings and Ace Hardware. Each store is fraught with tons of problems, running around and whining to sales people. Which takes me to now, 3:30, where I have spent almost 11 hours shopping on no sleep.

But hey, at least I didn't die. Apparently in New Jersey? I think...maybe New York...a salesperson at WalMart was trampled TO DEATH, and a pregnant woman at the same store ended up in the hospital. *shakes head* I don't know why we put ourselves through this ridiculous day.

Ugh, my mom camped out at Walmart this morning. I think she's absolutely insane. But she was saying that as everyone was running in and racing through the aisles, she was just calmly pushing her cart along, thinking that she should bring a video camera and label the video "Running of the idiots".

She was also saying that someone fell, and that while an employee was trying to help her up, nobody was stopping or even bothering to go AROUND the poor woman, so my mom just stopped in front of her and stayed there while the woman got to her feet.

So yeah . . . I just do not think that the sales are worth that kind of insanity. Apparently my mom is considering bringing me and my sisters next year to take turns standing in line with her. Let me just say, that is NOT happening.

Edit: Just checked out the death of the worker. I can't even say anything about this. It's just absolutely disgusting that people would kill someone because they didn't want to take the time to stop because they were too damn cheap to risk missing an item!

People....... are very odd.

Why is Black Friday Synonomous with "Shop til you Drop, then Your Mother Drops, then your sister, then her uncle, then his nephew, etc etc." Again?

I haven't even bothered to go shopping. I'm at home doing homework. My parents went shopping for a new bed though. They left around noon and they're still not back.:smallannoyed:

The employee at Wal-Mart in NYC was trampled to death as people busted through the door (literally tore it off it's hinges)as he was trying to control people, and two people were shot and killed at a Toys R Us in California.

yeah...great way to show the spirit of this "holiday."

I refuse to take part in Black Friday, I don't even get gas.

I stay away from black Friday liked the plague. It's really not worth a small discount on some Christmas presents. So today I went to upstate New York and stroked my own ego by telling myself that I was better than all those greedy shoppers. Overall, a good day.

Curious now ... are the specials on that one day actually worth it? Why not go shopping on another day? Maybe beforehand, while the stocks are still in? Or ... well, I don't live in America, so I don't know how it works.

Anyway, I really joined this thread because I hate shopping, period. Because I either know what type of thing I want and it's not available anywhere in any variety, or I don't know what I want and the variety bewilders me.

They can be. You can get some really good deals. I like to do it because it's a fun time to do something with my mom, aunt, grandma and cousin. We've done it every year for ages, and yes, people are crazy, but we have a really good time together. It's also a good excuse to get all your christmas shopping done at once, and in my case, to often get someone else to pay for it for me. Besides, if I didn't go, I would miss out on the chance to pick out my presents.

I did not get to go during the rush of shoppers, but I went to my local Wal-Mart at 8 AM today. It honestly looked as if a tornado had hit. Pieces of paper were scattered everywhere, and whole sections were completly bare. It sort of made me...scared for some reason. Dunno why.

EDIT: Just wanted to share my story. I don't really like shopping either.

Black Friday is the day after American thanksgiving, and stores have massive sales. They call it Black Friday because all the stores are normally "in the black" or making a profit.

EDIT: Someone beat me to it...

Alarra, glad you survived. Visiting Zeb would be decidedly less fun without you.:smalltongue:

I don't really see the advantage in buying things on Black Friday. I see it this way:

1). Go during Black Friday. Get up at 2 to stand in line outside a store (if you even go to sleep, that is). Get caught up in a huge riotous mass of shoppers. Try not to get trampled to death. Race for the best deals/products. Come home exhausted and probably bruised and irritated. Sleep with the knowledge you saved money.

2). Slowly buy things throughout the entire year. Wake up at 2 on Black Friday. Laugh at the thought of the people in lines. Go back to sleep in the knowledge that your Christmas shopping is almost finished and that you won't die in a shopping related accident that day. Probably.

Guess which one I favor. (Well, I only buy for my immediate family, so it's not exactly difficult, but . . .)

Or
3) Celebrate Festivus instead, and buy nothing, except maybe a new aluminum pole when the fancy strikes you.

Umm... not to put too sharp a point on it, but that article seems to have been deleted 4 days and 3 years ago. Is my wikipedia just not working?

Also, the reason for deletion makes no sense.

Finally, why must Americans have the biggest/most exciting/most powerful/most dangerous EVERYTHING? Well, I overstate a little, but it seems like if you want to find massive danger in the first world, America is the place to go.

Then again, bad things could be said about drop bears and the Big Banana/Pinapple/Merino here, so I can't really comment.

EDIT: And now the article is back, as though nothing ever happened... Curse you, internet!

Yeah, I did the shopping thing today too. But, one advantage I had was that most of the shopping was done online already. So that made things easier.

Circuit City had at least one police officer there. There were also remnants of the campers around it by the time I got there. Lots of coffee stains, cups, wrappers, that sort of stuff.

The worse place was ABC Warehouse. Holy crap. They had several officers and they were only letting fifty people in at a time. The outside line went down one side of the building, across the parking lot, and at least a block further down a side street. I felt sorry for the people in line. I decided it wasn't worth that much waiting.

As for deaths, I know one happened at a Kmart around here last year.

Being the most powerful people in your hemisphere gets boring, so we need risks. Even if it manifests in the form of shopping.

Its not easy being American you know. Everytime time we do anything, the entire world knows about it and has their own opinion about what we could have done differently.

Thank the gods for online shopping.
'Tis the season for deceit and trickery! And for me not being allowed to go on shopping trips with my parents. Which is a difficult thing, since I don't have a car.

That's why I love being a Dane. One of our newspapers angered a whole nation into attacking danish embassies, burning over thousand danish flags followed by stomping on them, ruined our economy by buy-cutting us entirely, and made millions of people protest against it for months and no one noticed...

Stories like these are the reason I'm strongly leaning towards just getting everyone on my shopping list gift cards from the Wal*Mart check-out lane. :smallsigh:

I don't like/want to do gift exchanges anyway. Sure thing, 'appreciate my loved ones,' blah blah blah. As far as I'm concerned there shouldn't be just one day set aside during the year to do something special for the people I care about; I try to make my feelings known every time I see them and a crappy $20 gift isn't going to do justice to my appreciation anyway. :smallannoyed: In the end it always ends up being about who spent more than somebody else, who spent more than they were supposed to, or who 'cheated' by giving someone a hand-me-down. Meh.

I was over in Texas last year during Black Friday. We went and looked around at a normal time. Stuff was not even busy, I got a cool hoodie for cheap. That was it!
Although the one thing was that it was a staff members first day on the job! On this crazily paced day. :smallconfused::smalleek:
