The town of Blackberry Falls is fairly small in and of the town itself, though it is rather large if you count all of the inhabited land that surrounds it. It gets its name from the river that runs off of a rather large cliff into a lake on the edge of town. Legend has it that the river once ran straight to the sea, but that a magical cataclysm caused the sudden rise of the Earth, and while there is no proof, the sudden change in elevation of landscape is rather odd. Blackberry Falls would be almost inconsequential were it not for Jerund's Port, a good two days march away. The fairly busy port city sends goods up the river, where they are loaded onto cart to be shipped to Fairhold, then further inland.

The town has two taverns, one, an expensive over-priced place where the Lord of the Manor likes to take his meals and make business deals, known as the Fickle Sprite, lies on the main road through town. The second, known as the Minotaur's Gambit, is in the Town-square, and while it may not be the cleanest place in town, the food and drink is undoubtedly better, and the custom more friendly.

Other amenities in town include a blacksmith/weapon shop in the square. The owner, Rorgax, is fairly busy at the moment, as the town is growing rather rapidly, and the farmers need tools. Though he specializes in blacksmithing, Rorgax can also forge weapons and armor for adventurer's though his on hand supply is rather small. A general store sit adjacent to Rorgax's forge and is run by a large, rather burly man name Seamus. He carries most standard gear, and given the proximity to a major port, can generally special order if given enough time. A rather small temple is also present in the square, with a shrine devoted to most of the major deities. There are two full-time priests who live in the chapel, as well as another six who live in town and help out during the day.

Most of the nearly seven hundred people of Blackberry Falls live in farms surrounding the city itself, however aside from the shop-keepers, there are a few who work the docks on the river from which the town gets its name.

You all sit within the cheaper of the two tavern's. It is around dusk, and the tavern is fairly busy. A barge just came in from Jerund's Port so there are a few workers lounging about until the caravan comes from Fairhold to collect their goods. There are several tables, both booths, and free available, as well as stools at the bar. The tavern is dimly lit, there are grimy lanterns hanging from the ceiling, and candles on a few tables. The bar-keeper, an attractive woman by the name of Leilah, stands behind the bar should you want food or drink.

Felix Alefist marches over to Leilah. Once there he says I'll take 5 ales. I'll be over in that far both over there*pointing*. My name is Alefist for a reason, you know? I'll also have some meat if you have any. Either boar, or pheasant, or fish, or whatever you have tonight. He then proceeds to walk off towards his both, where he sets his stuff down on the ground.

Sure thing.

After a minute Leilah comes over with a tray on one hand and a plate in the other. She moves gracefully across the room and sets down the tray, laden down with foaming amber ale, and then the plate, which has a large chunk of steaming meat.

Anything else honey?

Elaine grins at Felix's brashness, before ordering something for herself.

"Miss Leilah, I would like some water, bread, and beef stew. Please deliver to the same table as that gentleman," she gestures towards Felix.

Once finished, she makes her way over to Felix and bows, introducing herself.

"Greetings, master dwarf. It is not often that one of your kind graces this town. What brings you here today?"

I would like some bread and cheese too please. Felix says to Leilah.

Turning his attention to the lady he says My dear lady, I'm an adventurer, I go where I please. But it just so happened to be raining out so I came into town for some food. I'm Felix Alefist *reaches hand out for a handshaked* and you are.....

"Indeed, and where do you plan on looking for these caves? for my part, I've heard that when this cliff was raised from the sea, there were strange caves exposed, and strange things came out... but that was a long, long, time ago, and they're surely sealed now if they ever existed to begin with."

Nathaniel sits on a stool at the bar, carefully sipping his ale. It wouldn't do for him to drink it all at once and lose his judgement. Stupid town. Stupid Guild. Why'd they send me to this abyss-forgotten backwater place. 'Go to Blackberry' they said. 'What for?' I said. 'We need someone there to see what's going on' they said. 'Can't someone else go?' I said. thought Nathaniel, bitterly to himself. Of course, all's that had got him was a punch in the face, and an unconscious ride on a wagon to Blackberry.

Stupid town. he thought again, as he drained the last of his ale. Leilah motioned to refill his stein again. Nathaniel put his hand over his glass and said "Not yet."

He spun around on his stool, to get a wider look at the patrons of the tavern. The bottom of his mug was pretty boring after a while. The tavern was pretty empty. It would be another hour or so before the dock-workers finished for the day, and...Ah...

Nathaniel saw them. A dwarf, well on his way to getting drunk, or, at least, as drunk as dwarf could possibly get. And a reasonably attractive woman with him. Interesting...And easy marks too! Nathaniel motioned for Leilah to refill his stein. Maybe this town wont be so bad after all...

"Of course, what you're more likely to find is someone picking your pocket," Elaine continues.

Sitting at the table right behind the dwarf, Darwin was in the midst of drinking a hot, steamin' bowl of soup, as the short, drunken one-eyed man started shouting about pickpockets and crossbow bolts in the eyes.
He turned his head towards the dwart and the lady, smiled faintly and started walking towards them as he said:"I am sure no one will try to pickpocket you, my dear, fellow adventurer. My name is Darwin. I am, as I implied earlier, an adventurer in a manner of speaking.

"I meant no offense. I was just pointing out that this place seems safe enough. Anyway, you said you made your living as an adventurer, yes? "Are you talking to me?" He turned towards the young woman.

"Interested in my tale are you? Not much to tell, but alright, I'll tell you about me.
My full name is Darwin Scribeson, and I am a traveling priest of Oghma. I hail from this very city, and I've done a bit of adventuring, mostly as the spiritual advisor to a few lowscale mercenary teams. Now, I am looking for more work, and I am interested in starting my own team. What about you? Maybe you'd be interested in joining forces with me, and the dwarf, if he ever regains consciousness?

Edwin
2008-11-30, 04:33 PM
"Nothing, I suppose." Darwin said with a sligtly disappointed tone. "But you mentioned getting out of city, and I am sure you must have some talents. With your striking beauty and grace, I figured you'd atleast have som talent as a bard, or perhabs as the party face?" ´He started smiling again as he uttered the last part of that sentence.

The door to the tavern swings open, and a man wearing a long captain's cloak walks in, dripping from the rain outside. He takes a long look around the tavern, then goes and sits down next to a group the barge workers. He talks to them for a minute, and looks over at the group sitting at the table once or twice, finally he stands back up and walks over. He draws up a seat, then says, "Allow me to introduce myself, I'm Captain Rhorvald, I'm in charge of piloting the barge from over in Jerund's Port to here in Blackberry Falls, and of course making sure that the caravan gets the goods. We've hit a slight snag however, the Caravan has just arrived, but several of their guards were wounded on the way here, apparently a group of bandits have taken root in the forest to the East, and there's no other way to get to Fairhold. You three look fairly competent, if a bit intoxicated," he adds looking over at Felix. You'll be paid well, I assure you. Are you interested?

"Come on, now. I'm sure you don't mean me?, he said as he stood up. Leaving his mug at the counter. As he got up, he pulled a chair from an empty table and brought it over with him, as he set in down backwards with a plonk. Nathaniel straddled the chair and folded his arms over the backrest, and then leaned his head onto his arms.

"I heard there was talk of being 'well paid'. I'm a respectable...Mercenary. You could say. I've served a few times with trading ventures. And they've always ended up well. Sure, there were times when we got hassled and I've taken a knife or two. Here. I'll show you! Nathaniel says, as he begins to lift his shirt. He pauses, and squints one eye.

"Y'know what? I'll save that for another time. Still, I'm here. So that means I've lived through all my fights. And I'd appreciate it, Ma'am-" Nathaniel said, now looking at Elaine "If you didn't call me Shady - although, I do like the ring of it. My name is Corth." says Nathaniel, as he puts his hand out. Eager to shake someone's hand.

Given the disapproving look he gets from Elaine. Nathaniel frowns "No? Well. I can already see we'll be best friends."

You all wake up in the morning feeling refreshed and ready for the journey. As you head down to the docks, you smell the unmistakable smell of open water. A medium-sized barge sits on the docks, with various crates and chests around it, or in the process of being loaded into the four carts that make up the caravan. A middle-aged man that walks with a slight limp walks up to you, he wears simple traveling clothes, a white shirt with a leather jerkin, black pants, and leather boots. He carries a sword on his side, and a cross-bow on his back.

"I assume you're the guards that Rhorvald hired for me? I can't thank you enough. Our caravan barely made it here to pick up the shipment, we were ambushed by bandits, and all but one of our guards were slain. I hope you manage those weapons well.

Abruptly, what was just a pair of legs of someone digging around in a damaged crate becomes a large man, walking towards the group with a pleased expression in his face. He looks to be heavily built and wears the scruffy look of a traveller about him. His beard is untrimmed and short, and interestingly enough, he has an axe that's almost as tall as him strapped to his back. It moves through the air rather worryingly sharp looking. The man draws up to a stop next to the person inspecting the adventuring group. You can see now that he was even more heavily built than you thought, muscles ripple beneath his well-crafted mail like the waves of the sea, and the calluses on his hands look as if they were from a blacksmith that didn't use gloves. He holds something small and white out to the other man.

"'Ey look: I found another one of Roald's teeth - poor bugger. I always told him that fighting fast wouldn't get him anywhere in the end."

Throwing the tooth over his shoulder and into the ocean before anyone can get a good look at it, he turns to the motley group of adventurers.

"So, these are the new guards for the caravan?

He raises an eyebrow as he inspects at the group.

"They look a bit... Mixed, for guards.

Stupendous_Man
2008-12-07, 09:45 PM
"I'm sure. I see that you're still mopping up after the raid the other day," Elaine says, noticing the blood on him and the fact that he had just picked out a tooth. "Care to talk about it?"

She casts Prestidigitation and uses it to clean his armor off, hoping ot make a good impression as well as announce her abilities.

Rettu Skcollob
2008-12-07, 10:05 PM
Kanose chuckles as the woman cleans his armour with a flick of her wrist.

"Haha, I see, a Wizard then. That explains it."

He rolls his neck, feeling the joints crack.

"Not too much to say. There was a fair amount of us there, but we weren't expecting a fight. Bandits dropped out of the trees during the dead of night - that idiot Lharne was on watch; couldn't find his arse without a map. So, the bandits have already butchered half of us by the time we got ourselves together - most of us still being unarmoured, we fought as best we can, but there wasn't much hope. Still, I managed to knock the chip on the shoulder of their leader off - by means of removing his head along with it. With the help of my little friend here, of course." He taps the massive axe on his back. "And I guess the sight of me beating one of their men to death with their leaders head just was a bit too much for them - particularly as by now most of us had gotten our weapons to hand.

He sighed, looking skyward for a moment in remembered exasperation.

"Still, the boys were stupid enough to chase after the bandits - not realising that they still outnumbered us two to one, and they were all armed and armoured. The bandits realised it before they did, so it didn't work out too well for them. They certainly didn't go down without a fight though. There were only about... five or six bandits left when they came back to try and get the cargo? They hadn't reckoned on me having climbed a tree and getting the drop on them - literally, as it turns out. Having me drop on two of your number from twenty feet wearing mail tends to discourage most bandits. They scarpered, and I had to bring the bloody caravan in myself."

He shrugs.

"I didn't get paid any extra either. Oh well. Such is life."

Stupendous_Man
2008-12-07, 10:19 PM
"Did you have the right to loot the bandit corpses? Armor and weapons always sell when danger is present."

Rettu Skcollob
2008-12-07, 10:24 PM
Kanose shakes his head.

"Most of what they had was pretty shoddy stuff even if it worked properly. Took a few bits and pieces and all the gold they had - it wasn't much, even though I had only myself to divide it between. And that was almost all gone after they saw fit to deduct the costs of the damaged goods from my wages, the bastards. Sooner that I can wash myself of this whole endeavor, the better. Signed on for a full trip though, so I can't complain.

Stupendous_Man
2008-12-07, 10:50 PM

Rettu Skcollob
2008-12-07, 11:08 PM
Kanose laughs heartily - he was beginning to like the magic-user already. Not many people would be willing to call him out like that - let alone a woman as pretty as she. Perhaps this trip would be more fun than he'd thought.

"Haha, I guess you're right there."

Abruptly, he makes an apologetic noise.

Stupendous_Man
2008-12-07, 11:18 PM
"I'm sure it can't go too badly; what are the chances of getting struck twice in one go? I'm sure those bandits are in the next county by now. Thieves aren't usually too persistent over trade goods..."

Elaine trails off. "Though, of course, that is an assumption on my part, as we were never told exactly what is being shipped."

He walks away and begins directing the various workers, making sure that they're being careful with the fragile goods and such.

The journey is usually only two days, however the plan is to camp outside the forest the first night, then inside the second, and arrive at Fairhold by the third night. This ensures that the caravan won't spend two nights within the bandit's forest.

"So, amicable to the suggestion, I take it?" She whispers.

Nathaniel, for the most part all you see are crates being packed into the various carts, however you also notice one of the men packing a few small statues into a crate which they then put into one of the carts.

Is there anything else that anyone wants to do before we leave town?

Nathaniel narrows his eyes as he spots the statue being packed into the crate. Interesting...

The rest of the day goes by fairly slowly, the road is dirt paved and you reach the forest about two and a half hours before night-fall, but Kenneth tells the men dealing with the horses to stop now.

"If we're goin' to have to sleep in the forest, I'd rather it only be once," he says when questioned about it by one of his men.

He walks over to where you have stopped, near the rear of the caravan. "Me men'll get a sort of camp set up, and we have food, but you'll be on watch after dark, thats what you've been hired for. Its up to you to sort out when you all sleep and when you guard, just make sure it gets done.

"Affirmative, sir. And, if I may ask, are there any wagons we should keep an especially close eye on? If so, I can sleep near them for extra security."

Er.. well, uh no. They're all just regular trade goods, no need to keep an extra set of eyes on any of them.

Its rather obvious that he's lying, and as he walks away he takes a few glances at one of the wagons.

Nathaniel pipes up, as the rest of the group begin to get out their sleeping rolls and blankets. "I'll take first watch." he offers.

Kanose is silent for most of the journey, speaking only when spoken to. He quickly unrolls his bedroll and removes his armour, with the air of one who has done something a thousand times before. Placing his greataxe within easy arms reach next to his bed, the heavily built man prepares himself for sleep.

"I'll take the last watch." He says, gruffly. He liked taking the last watch. It meant he didn't have to spend ages waking up.

"I'm up for whatever. Wake me as necessary." Elaine will set up around the closest fire.

The camp is set up a little ways off from the road, about a hundred yards from the edge of the forest. The carts are arranged in a circle with three fires set up inside the circle. A little after dark one of the men makes stew and pulls out rations of bread, and offers some to you all. The men sit around talking for about an hour before they all finally nod off. Kenneth goes to sleep in the cart that he was staring at earlier, and that Nathaniel saw the statues being packed into. There are three men around it, the rest lay down to sleep throughout the rest of the camp.

:Psst: Nathaniel, you're on first watch, what are you doing?

Natheniel creeps quietly around the camp, trying not to disturb any of the sleeping idiots. Trying to get a closer look at what he saw earler.

EDIT: Sweet! A 20!

Plus whatever circumstance bonus I get for being asleep. Sleeping people don't make Spot checks (but it's just my luck if someone only pretends to sleep), and I believe it's -4 to Listen (translates to +4 Move Silently) if you're asleep.

...And you can't post comments like "Psst...Nathaniel what're you doing?" without spoilers or some kind of OOC descriptor. I actually wrote half my post before I realised that nobody was talking to me IC...

OOC: Sorry about that.

You move stealthily towards the wagon that you saw the statues go into earlier. Once inside you spot the crate immediately, however Kenneth is sleeping next to it and there's a large padlock on it. It doesn't look like a very complicated lock, but it'll take time regardless.
