I'm looking to build my background music play list anyone have some good suggestions? Nothing too modern/techno. I'm looking for bands and classical tracks not recently used in Major motion pictures. Here's my list so far:

O'Fortuna - Carmina Burana
Night on Bald mountain (Mussorgsky)
In the Hall of the mountain king(Grieg)
Conan Soundtrack
LOTR sound track(of course)
Mars-The Bringer of War(Holst - from the Planets) - This is excellent if you haven't heard it
Ride of the Valkyries(Wagner from Die Walkure[The Ring])
A little bit of Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica and Megadeath

I just happened to be watching this. Metallica's Nothing Else Matters covered as a cello instrumental. I think that fits all your criteria.

Yeah, Medieval 2: Total War soundtrack, the Broken Crescent mod has some good stuff in it too, and the music on the DotS mod preview is good too. Too lazy to link though.

Browse around here (http://www.ocremix.org/). There's probably something along the lines of what you're looking for.

Legend of Zelda remixes are usually in the neighborhood, but there is its fair share of techno and random stuff.

Blackmore's Night (http://www.blackmoresnight.com/index2.htm)
It's a group that plays songs in a renaissance style.

A few songs:
Queen for a day (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gD-gh5e3DUg)

Fires at Midnight (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUqTM52uZDc)

In the Hall of the mountain king(Grieg)
Great choice, Peer Gynt is pure win.

And you can't go wrong with Mozart's "Requieum," especially the Dies Irae or the Rex Tremendae.

Anything, and I do mean anything, by the band Corvus Corax.

A german band that plays medieval music with authentic instruments.

Anything from Nox Arcana (http://www.noxarcana.com/). Just pick the CD that fits the mood of your game.

Also, Winter's Knight should be played all winter long.

In Extremo is pretty good. The band is a little bit unknown in the world, but at least in germany they manage to fill some halls.

(They even made a ingame appearence in Gothic, a damm good medieval RPG)

The song texts are usually hold in some old languages like gaelic ... some are german.
Instruments range from present things like guitars to old pipes.

Herr Manelig. (suits perfect for a medieval market place)

For some time, it was quite common that you could download the soundtracks of computer games from the game's website; I don't know if this is still that usual.

Nox Arcana is prety good, but sometimes a bit sinister and depressive. This is not the source for that cheery and optimistic scenes in the town fair.

There is a specifically created 'official' D&D soundtrack froom Midnight Syndicate. It's okay, but not that great.

The best atmosphere band I know is Erdenstern (http://www.erdenstern.de/en/index.php), because they manage to include all kinds of atmospheres, for different scenes, from friendly binge drinking to mysterious scenes to action scenes... The other great advantage is, that every album is effectively the soundtrack to a complete adventure or even campaign that just waits to be played; there is a very clear red line in their albums.

And, probbly the most expensive versions are movie soundtracks, there are many which are quite good, but the danger of recognition and strong asociations is quite high and can give the scenario a completely different touch than you intended.

I'll second Blackmore's Night. I've also had good luck with Vangelis, though some of their stuff is more futuristic.

Surprised no one has mentioned it, but get any album by the Mediaeval Baebes (sometimes spelled Medieval Babes). They perform actual Medieval pieces (mostly folk music). Sometimes leans a little Loreena KcKennit-ish but generally has a Ye Olde vibe.

For game music try some tracks from Final Fantasy IX. They made an effort to have truly mediaevel sounding music, including the theme song. Worth your time.
