Animal companion theory? Yeah, he'd be a 4 HD (4 and 1/2 HD actually) animal companion according to various estimates.

I have never really understood why a ranger companion should be any less than an adventuring druid companion... I always think of a ranger companion as being a lot less fragile than 1/4 level implies.

That's 1/2 level. And it is (I assume) because the ranger is a [one-half of his ranger levels] level spellcaster IF at least on 4th level, and is not a spellcaster before. Now, rangers get an animal companion at 4th level and have it as strong as that of a [Ranger lv/2] levels druid. And the new (3.5) animal companion is a magical beast and not an animal, like in 3.0.

There is a reasonable shot kitty is 6hd. All it needs is Belkar as 12th level ranger, and he is unlikely to be less than 11.
