Simple is a relative term, of course, but after doing it once or twice, it becomes pretty quick and easy to make new maps using the techniques in the tutorial I've written.

Feedback is welcome.

GIMP?

GNU Image Manipulation Program (http://www.gimp.org/) (GIMP). It's an open-source alternative to Photoshop and the like.

Thanks, Duke! I'll check this out when I've got some time. You may see the fruits of your labor when M'llanana gets into her next fight. :smallwink:

Shouldn't this be in Arts and Crafts? Nice tutorial though

Thanks for pointing out Grid. I would have ended up doing it by hand. :smalleek:

Sample, using a nightvision grid (http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f286/pwned101/Maerok_sample_with_nightvisionGrid.png)

You could have a layer for fog of war. I played around with opacity between layers as well.

Or PbP. I posted here because there are occasional questions on how to make maps in this forum.

Yep. I should add that to the "tips" section.

You can get real fancy as well as use Script-Fu options to create bevels and drop shadows for 3D effects, but that's beyond the scope of the tutorial.

Looks good. I've used Inkscape in a similar way, though it's not as good for natural caverns.

Everyone knows GIMP stands for GIMP Is My Photoshop. Anyways, have you tried using Excel for this? It works really well, easy to move stuff around. It's not the prettiest, though you could probably import textures to make the excel shapes look like various textures if you really wanted.

Yes, I have used Excel or similar programs. They work passably, but some people like more detailed maps.
