Wow. I kinda want her to actually get the money so I can see the ad.

Thoughts?

...That ain't gonna' work.

I deny it.

Or rather, it might work, but it shouldn't.

if i were an eccentric billionaire (and let's face it - what other kind of billionaire could *I* possibly be?), i would give her the money just to see what, if anything, she would do with it. i'm sure she didn't expect to get the $3 million, but she got a spot in the LA Times for free, so i think she's already won.

only an advertiser.

"I live in Manhattan," Borkowsky says from her East Side apartment. "People think of Manhattan and they think of 'Sex and the City' and love around every corner. But according to the latest census, single women in Manhattan outnumber single men by more than 100,000, so it's not that easy to meet someone."
BOOOOHOOO, aren't there coffeehouses in Manhattan? Go to a coffeehouse and TRY to strike a pleasant, casual conversation with some male who appears to be sitting alone and doesn't have a wedding ring. If they're outnumbered, chances are they're more desperate than this woman [or perhaps even me :smallmad: ].

Player Zero is right, it'll probably work, but it should not work. Go get some coffee, woman!

edit: And dear god, she's even a member of Mensa. That's it, I give up on this world. I'm off to Baathor, Blood War awaits mercs :smallfurious:

Mensa huh?

...Just goes to show, you can be as intelligent as you like and still be stupid. In fact, I show that on a daily basis.

Oh well, shouldn't judge I suppose. Every gets lonely sometimes.

and I thought I could put myself out there like a product, like a cola or SUV.

...Shock. Shock is all I have at that quote.

When I first read it I was thinking, "Wow, this reeks of desperation from a thousand miles away." and when she tried to claim it wasn't...honestly, is looking at friend's of friends or getting a hobby or something out of style now?

I, on the other hand, hope it works out for her.

Yeah, that definitely fell into the "did she really say that?" list...

If you've got the money, more power to you, guess the rest of us will just have to deal the old fashioned way...

It is desperation ... at the degree to which her comedy career is not moving.

Shorter name than Borkowsky? She better hope the Bears don't make the Super Bowl, that might drag down the options. (Though at least the Packers don't have much of a shot this year).

Think of all the more useful things you could do with that much money. I won't be surprised if the ad works, but there are many—less financially wasteful—ways to find romance.

I'm quite disgusted by this. Ever tried, you know (not literal you), talking to someone? That's what I did, and I have a friggin' social phobia. Being poor and in college doesn't help.

Well, since she's only raised $1700, chances are slim it'll actually work. Seeing as how those commercial slots cost several million dollars.

Actually, last time I checked the site she was at $2,050.

Cristo Meyers

I wonder if she really just did this to get a quick payday? She had to know there was almost no chance of raising almost $3 million for such a dubious reason.

Tirian
2008-12-11, 04:28 PM
She's actually up to $5,000 (or so she claims on her website). And her "backup plan" is that Doritos or Budweiser or whoever decide that it would be amusing to place her in one of their ads, at which point she donates her collection to the United Way.

Krytha
2008-12-11, 04:34 PM
Well, she's already in some papers. I doubt she'll get the necessary cash, but she has gotten some more advertisement free of charge already, so I figure that's good enough for her - although I can't imagine the kind of people who are ringing her up right now.

Mauve Shirt
2008-12-11, 04:39 PM
Jeez, this is such a wasteful and selfish thing to do. And anyone who calls her is going to likely be a total creep! :smallyuk: Desperation indeed.

Some crazy stuff indeed! Typical US... :smallamused:

But come on - it's extremely clever! She get's easy money and lot's of attention (if she wants it at all) without some ad. I doubt she is really going for it (3 million are just too much to get so fast and too much to waste - also 3 million are by themselves the best ad one can probably get :smalltongue:).
She just found a way to use all that sick publicity-perversion for her own good.

Smart girl...

To be honest, I'm just kinda "meh" about this all.

So, she might get someone this way. Yes, she's desperate. So what? Nothing that bad about it, is there? It's her choice, while I personally would not be seen dead doing that, I know quite nice guys who would pick up on such an ad. Not the failure it seems to be, and I don't think it's much to be ZOMG about.

It is desperation ... at the degree to which her comedy career is not moving.Well played, sir or madame.

But, it's not the desperation I'm judging [actually, I'd be the last to judge or make fun of someone lonely]. It's the method in which she thinks she'll achieve her goal that makes me cringe. I am sure she will succeed too, because idiocy has magnetic attraction [just look at Elan], but the excess money could have gone to something useful. If nothing, she could have used it for her lover or to buy presents for friends/family. I know damn well I'd buy a crapload of things for my mate or people I care for, instead of using them just to blow it on one single ridiculous thing like this.

I think I need to move to Manhattan if women out number men by that much.

...

Wait...what's wrong with these women....?

Furthermore, what's wrong with this woman that she has not found a husband after (guessing) 20 years of dating...?

Coidzor
2008-12-11, 07:44 PM
Yeah... That's part of why I have nightmares about not finding at least a long-term girlfriend by the time I'm 26, since society likes to make like there's something wrong with you and you need to be killed with fire if you're single and not, like, married to your work or something. And even then you're more likely to be a crazy mad scientist or cold corporate executive than a normal person.

Heh... It's not Mars needing women, it's Manhattan needing a few good men. Then again, the huge sea of people in and of itself can cause BSODs....

Beyond the hubris and wastefulness, I'd like to raise a logistical problem: suppose that .1% of viewers respond to the ad; that's 60,000 men putting themselves forward for her consideration. How does she process them? Dating sites have an easy (I'd assume) format for you to give a bio a quick review and discard or keep for further review. Without that, what's she going to do, read 60K freeform emails and open attached photos?

The money is going to the United Way. Trust me, if Warren Buffett descended from the rafters and handed her three million dollars, Amy Borkowski is far too neurotic to spend it on herself. You can see in her blog (http://www.superbowlsinglegirl.com/blog/) that asked for people to donate pennies and then realized that she needed to spend seventy-four cents mailing them a thank-you note. High-larious, INORITE?

She's doing this so that she can write a book about what happens when you ask sports radio to set you up on a blind date. This is to go along with the CD collection of her crazy mother's answering machine messages and the book that traces her life through her old credit card statements.

Oh yes, I am very intelligent and can reach to quite the heights of stupidity at times.

And I hear that Mensa, in general, is kind of arrogant. We don't need them; they're below us. It's not everyone who has been gifted with the awesome mental capacity--

This article raises a number of questions for me.

1. Who would be attracted to a woman who dates by spending $3 million of other people's money on a Super Bowl ad?
2. What woman would be attracted to the kind of man who would find such a woman attractive?
3. Who the hell is going to donate her millions of dollars to get a date during a recession?
4. Does she seriously believe this is going to work?
5. If this does work, does that prove that Western civilization has already collapsed?
6. Does anyone want to help me found an American Inquisition to track down egregiously self-indulgent people?

This is utterly brilliant. Not in terms of finding a husband no... but in terms of PR for the woman who is a comedian and advertising writer? So much free exposure it hurts. One of the best advertising deals since that casino bought the grilled cheese with the virgin mary on it.
