Having read the hilarious Let's Play Boatmurdered (http://lparchive.org/LetsPlay/Boatmurdered/intro.html) (caution: contains some bad language), I decided that it was high time I downloaded the Roguelike Dwarf Fortress (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DwarfFortress)and saw what all the fuss was about. Unfortunately, this is the first ASCII game I've ever attempted, and from what I can gather, also the most complex one ever!

I think I've got a shaky grasp of the basics after about 3 hours of gameplay, and I was just wondering... Has anyone ele in the Playground played this game? Any funny stories about the game's many bugs, or useful hints for a beginner like me?

Head over to the Gaming forum. I believe there is a thread about this in the Gaming(Other games) Section. As for personal experience, I have none :smallfrown:

... :smalleek: Crap. I should have known that.

'Nyway, thanks, I'll head over there now. And to the mods: Sorry for cluttering the board up unnecessarily.

Check the wiki and forums out (http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Main_Page & http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?)

If you dont want it in ASCII, try out this mod: http://mayday.w.staszic.waw.pl/df.htm

That game is quite difficult to learn but the gameplay is incredibly rich. You can have surprises even after months of play. Even though you just play dwarves digging through rocks, you can carve and build incredible things or create very intricate mecanisms.

Even for a normal game, you need to develop some tricks: the forum is usefull for players to exchange these tricks: that's how I learned how to control pet population for example.

Also, the better you become, the more difficulties you can throw in your starting game: you think you had it easy in your last game? Then let's play on a terrifying shore and see how you like skelettal whales and sharks walking (!) out of water to hunt your dwarves! :smalleek:

As a beginner you should really read the wiki, there are starter's tip which are very usefull.
One thing to remember: you will fail, often, and learn from those failures.
First play I failed because I couldn't get enough food.
Next play I managed to get food but failed on the booze.
Next one I lost all my dwarves to a giant invisible spide before I could even TRY to make some food or booze!
Next one I was doing OK until goblins attacked me with bloody trolls! :smalleek:
Next one I had a thriving food and booze factory, good defences, some good troops and a nice fortress. Then goblins attacked and killed a lone dwarf outside... When I noticed that dwarves were running outside to get the socks and other items, they were already getting minced by the gobbos, promting yet other dwarves to go outside to get slaugtered... :smallconfused:

Now I have learned enough to be able to maintain a stable community and thrive, but that only means I want to try harder maps and harder challenge. I have heard that if you piss off elves, they can attack you as well and their warriors eat the dwarves they kill. Apparently it's not a bug and i want to see this! :smallwink:

Good luck!
