Just thought I'd give my fellow forum-goers a fair warning. With six-hundred and sixteen comics, we're only 50 comics from the Armaggedon Comic!! double-check your lucky 666-proof underwears people!

I pity the fool who doesn't see my sarcasm
No, really! I pity him!

In some early translations, 616 is in fact the number of the Beast, not 666. So we may already be there. :smallwink:

That's how I actually noticed it the first place!

There are demonic forces active in the story so far. It would be cute for a demon or devil to get a side joke in #666.

It would be amusing if Sabine or her employers managed to show up in that strip. And we are due for a Linear Guild cutaway soonish. We know they were heading for a gate, so maybe we'll see them setting up camp at Kraagor's gate for now?

(Although if Girard's gate is in the kingdom ruled by Nale and Elan's father, that wouldn't make much sense.)

That, or they (whoever's arc will be active at the moment) will just have a random encounter with a dinosaur. Or some other beast.

That would make a good end of book comic with some huge splash page of something really bad coming up for the next book, like

Redcloak and Xykon leaving for Girard's gate (about time)

In some early translations, 616 is in fact the number of the Beast, not 666. So we may already be there. :smallwink:I'm not sure how you can say they're "early translations" when the manuscripts in question are in the language it was originally written in...maybe you meant "early manuscripts"?

It's a tricky one as to which it is, though. IIRC, our earliest copies of Revelation (from the 3rd and 4th centuries) say "616" but Irenaeus, back in the 2nd century, wrote that according to people who knew the original author, "616" was a mistake and "666" was the correct one. Which one it is seems to depend on how much someone trusts in Irenaeus's writings.

Or maybe there will be no theme for 666 as it could be part of a different story arc.

somehow, i feel that that will most definitely be the case. The Giant will ignore it. but, something WILL happen on that day, something momentous for the beast. He will be BORN on that day!

#666 Qarr will appear as the new familiar of V, regardless if V was or wasn't back, but let's say something will happen to unleash this imp as V's second familiar, as it was so much speculated XP

Irregular Webcomic! did the same, but the random played a little with the author. One panel featured the DM with a rulebook and it - quite randomly - was a Beastiary. Since DMM is working with a huge buffer, I doubt he even knew that it's gonna be 666 (http://www.irregularwebcomic.net/666.html).

I think its too inviting a bad joke target not to be referenced. Ala, "Did you get the number of that beast?" that just ran over Elan, or Belkar making a sarcastic remark about someone's efforts in a single's bar or something equally horrible.

My prediction(not so serious):

Someone's gonna cry in it.
In #222, Mrs. Dirtfarmer cried, in #333, Durkon cried and in #444, Haley cried.
Since nobody cried in #111 or #555, this is a rather uncertain prediction, however. Smells like a coincidence.

Although the least funny, that is one of my favorite possibilities.

Iron Maiden references for the win!

Speaking of that seminal album, I just found out that Dream Theater covered the entire album at one point.

Incidentally, has anyone noticed that 666 was probably not originally written in arabic numerals? If written in Latin, it is every numeric letter from 500 down, descending. Like so.

DCLXVI

What that means I have no idea. But it's a nifty progression. Of course, the original author probably wrote it in Greek (whatever that would look like), so it's probably moot.

Hmm .. what would 616 be ..

DCXVI

So it's precisely the same number, without the "L". Easy to see why that might be a typo.

Except, of course, that's latin alphabet and I'll wager the manuscript is in Greek.

Respectfully,

Brian P.

Like the vast majority of the New Testament, Revelation would have been originally written in Greek. (Koine Greek specifically. Even in the Empire, educated people usually wrote in Greek even when day to day work was done in Latin.) The symbolism and numerology (and the associated coded messages to other Jews/early Christians) behind it were strictly Hebrew.

Another interesting fact about the number 666:
It's the sum of every wholenumber from 1 to 6^2, i.e. 1+2+3+...+35+36=666.

[regarding 616 and 666 in Roman numerals]
Except, of course, that's latin alphabet and I'll wager the manuscript is in Greek.

You may want to pick your language first, and then find your justification. Some early manuscripts use 616, which could be a code for either Caligula (Gaius Caligula Caesar) or Nero (Nero Caesar) transliterated into Hebrew, while others use 666, often thought a code for the Greek name of Nero (Neron Kaisar) transliterated into Hebrew. If it really was meant to be in latin, it could be an acronym about Domitianus Caesar. And no, I don't really know that much about all of this... but I do have access to Wikipedia :)

Another interesting fact about the number 666:
It's the sum of every wholenumber from 1 to 6^2, i.e. 1+2+3+...+35+36=666.

It's also the sum of the squares of the first 7 prime numbers.

The same banter in #600, but the last panel is a cut-away to something terrible, like a well known character death.
