NOTES
All fiendish monstrous scorpions on summon monster lists replaced with
equivalent fiendish monstrous crabs. (See stormwrack)
All celestial templated creatures replaced with anarchic templated creatures.
(See planar handbook)

Anyways, the Summon Monster I list is simple enough to customize on my own, but soon I'll level and gain access to more levels of summons, and there're so many books with monsters to swap into the summon monster list.

So, what do you people recommend, in the circumstances?

Instead of Spell Focus: Conjuration, take the Planar Touchstone feat, link to Catalogues of Enlightenment (Planar Handbook) to pick up Augment Summoning as a domain power (domain from Eberron, Cult of the Dragon Below).

If you're going to keep Spell Focus: Conjuration... you may want to consider Imbued Summoning, and then dipping into Sand Shaper. You will lose a caster level, but it moves some good touch-buffs such as bear's endurance, bull's strength, and cat's grace down to 1st level spells. You also get the Summon Desert Ally spells.

You also might want to consider Frost Mage from Frostburn. Costs two not-so-great feats (Snowcasting, Frozen Magic), but can add the Conjure Ice Beast spells to your spell list. This gives you access to ice beast versions of Summon Nature's Ally creatures. Also, ice beasts can gain the engulf special attack, which can be handy with the large- and huge-sized monstrous centipedes (and Augment Summoning/Imbued Summoning/Strength buffs can increase that engulf DC).

As far as alternate creatures to summon... MM4 and MM5 are the only books that explicitly list which creatures are summonable. Looking through those... I don't really see anything that jumps out as being all that impressive.

I don't see how I could possibly gain access to a planar touchstone at this level.
Furthermore, I already got Augment Summoning as a bonus feat, I didn't need Spell Focus to get into it.
Spell focus is for qualifying for Master Specialist at level 4.

As for prestige class, sand shaper seems good, although losing a caster level is one of the major deciding factors. Frost mage simply gains the ice beast spells too slowly for my needs.

I also happen to know Stormwrack and Fiend Folio have more summonable creatures.

You do realize that there's almost no point in an arcane caster taking levels of Malconvoker, right?

Only one of the class features is not useful to a wizard (the extra spells). All the others are useful to some extent.

The only one which might be considered useless is the one which lets you summon evil creatures without affecting your alignment, which might be considered useless because you have no deity to match alignments with.

well, it's the fact that the very point of the class is to allow good divine casters to summon fiends (not because it's evil to do so, but because they can't cast against alignment). Arcane casters can already do this, so there's very little point to an arcane caster taking the class. Granted, there are other features, but make sure they're really worth the sidetrack... and that you're DM won't make you switch alignments just for doing this...

Ah. I love how no one's answered my question. >.>

(Also, how is my DM gonna make me switch alignments? My class feature specifically says I don't...

And if you hadn't noticed, Malconvoker has a very good sidetrack)

Uh, Malconvoker is a damn good summoner PrC for Wizards. You get, among others, free Twin Spell on all your summons. That's a +4 metamagic, applied without cost automatically. Then the level 1 ability is a free metamagic too. And the binding cap increase allows you to bind Balors. And Deceptive Summons actually allows you to better utilize those evil summons, etc.

And if you hadn't noticed, Malconvoker has a very good sidetrack)The reason people advocate Cleric over Wizard for Summoners is the immortal phrase "If a Wizard casts a spell on the Cleric spell list, for that round, he's a chump". Wizards have almost only one advantage over Clerics, their spell list, and Clerics get better HD, BAB, Armor, and spellcasting mechanics. If you're using the Cleric's list, then you gave up all of the Cleric mojo to do the same thing he does. However, the Wizard does get better stuff if you focus solely on Summoning in the form of the ACFs which save you feats (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/specialistWizardVariants.htm#enhancedSummoning) and make your Summoning better (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/specialistWizardVariants.htm#rapidSummoning) than a Cleric's.
