Hello,

I'd like to add some plane hopping to my game. Right now my players (and I) have never really used the planes (besides going etheral). I have the MottP and browsed through it, but never actually studied it.

Do you have any ideas how I could introduce the planes to my game? The avg party level is 6 at the moment, the only arcane caster is our sorceress.

My idea was to introduce the idea of the planes now, with some sidetracks with even more info on the planes and start some "serious" plane hopping around lvl 12.

But, as a total noob to the planes I really need some help and ideas. My hope is that some of you experienced guys can share some tips & tricks and maybe even adventure ideas.

Well, if you want to do it by RAW there's always The Hrothgar's Journey invocation (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/magic/incantations.htm#hrothgarsJourney). Or there's them stumbling across a portal leading to Sigil. Or some outsider Gates them onto its plane, for its own inscrutable purposes.

Start small. Pick a single plane (or section thereof) that appeals to you and have the characters end up there when they tinker with a McGuffin/sail into a planar vortex/chase a guy through the wrong door. You might want to schedule the jump for the end of a session, let the players get the 'not in Kansas anymore' vibe, then cliff-hanger them. :smallwink:

You might choose to use a small demi-plane as just another backdrop for a change of pace adventure, or you could change the focus of the campaign entirely into an epic "we're lost in other dimensions and want to get home alive" odyssey (after the D&D cartoon, Ulysses 31 or Vengeance of Alphaks).

Speaking as a 1-3E monkey. I heartily recommend the Planescape downloads from paizo (particularly the 3 "Planes of..." boxed sets - Law/Conflict/Chaos), they are gold for any and all planehoppers. They might be a couple of editions old, but the richness of ideas is endless. Oh, and there are no 'you must be this level high to play' signs around. :smallamused:

Fun places to visit and loot: The City of Sigil is a good jumping off point and fun for urban adventuring.
Acheron is great for hack-and-slash, warlordism, and looting ancient derelict warmachines.
Pandemonium is an entire plane of dungeon-as-barmy-mythic-underworld (it can be Hollow World, Underdark and Alice in Wonderland all at once).
Ysgard is basically a Norse-flavoured D&D writ large and set on giant earthbergs that flow like glaciers. :smallcool:

I'll try to get the paizo supplements (if they are also sold in pdf form).

The suggested planes sound like fun, esp. Pandemonium and Ysgard. Once they are on that plane, do I simply continue "as normal"? I'd like to make the different planes "feel" different.

Hm.. is there a "Planes for dummies" on the web? If I add them to my game, I need to inform my players as well (or at least the arcane caster, as soon as he gest some skill in knowledge: the planes) - and having something neat to hand out would great.

Sorry if this sounds kinda fuzzy, but since my knowledge in this area is limited to non existent, I don't even know what to ask :(

Although Planewalker (http://www.planewalker.com/) is the definitive planar lore site, 1d4chan's Planescape Primer (http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Planescape) (SFW) is much more accessible. It has brief overviews of the planes, the Factions, and a gallery of some of Tony Diterlizzi's planar art including a really flavourful multiverse map (http://1d4chan.org/images/c/cb/The_Planescape_Multiverse_by_zen79.jpg).

As any cutter in Planescape would tell you, if you want a thorough guide to the Realms Beyond you'll need to keep your mimir (http://www.mimir.net/) handy. :xykon:
