Default Re: Warhammer 40K Tabletop XXIV: ...And They Shall Know No Fluff

Building on a Budget: Tau Empire

The Tau have Gundams. What more do you want!? Okay, fine. They're an expansionist, socialist caste-based society that have long since disposed of outmoded melee weapons for bigger, better and stronger ranged weapons. What kind of stupid idiot would try and hit you with a chainsword, when they could have just shot you from hundreds of metres away? Tau are the 'smart' race of 40K, and that makes them cool. Oh, right...They also have Gundams. So, let's...

Rule #1; Get to 1850 as cheaply as possible, while
    Rule #2; Not being bad.

Rule #2 says that deliberately taking units because they are expensive points-wise is not allowed. Because that's being bad.

First up, Tau have a Battleforce. Well, they actually have two. But Burning Dawn is so terrible that you should just stay away from it. Besides, the 'exclusive' model in Burning Dawn is also found in the Battleforce...So much for exclusive. Straight off the bat, in the Battleforce, the Fire Warriors are half price and the Ethereal is free. You should absolutely buy the Battleforce, immediately. Do it now.

If you can find the rules for Aun'Do, somehow, you should definitely use him. He's 75 Points and he's not even bad. But, if you don't have the rules for Aun'Do, ignore the Ethereal. You didn't pay any money for him so you're not under any obligation to use him. Using the Ethereal model 'just because' you got him for free, is breaking Rule 2.

But, as with most lists, we need to start with our Warlord. Depending on what your Warlord can do (with or without a fixed Trait), often determines what kind of army you're going to want to build, and, since we're not bad, we'll also want to put our Warlord in a 'retinue unit', to make a star unit to build our list around. As we've learned, the most efficient models are Infantry models that cost a lot of points (this is when WHFB players laugh at 40K players, because WHFB allows for several Infantry models in an army each costing several hundred points each).

    (0.33) Commander Farsight
    (0.31) Commander Shadowsun

Barely coming in under the 0.33 threshold.
The thing is, Crisis Suit boxes come with parts to make an Iridium Commander, and that's where it's at. You'll notice that I haven't yet included any of the Battleforce units into the army yet. Because we're about to do something. You guessed it, we're buying another Crisis Suit box. With the 'Suits from the Battleforce, we now have 6. One of those will be our Commander-in-Iridium, which leaves us a solid unit of 5 Crisis Suits.
Buying this second box also springs us to double the amount of weapons.

    But, back to the Battleforce. Breachers are, in a word; Fantastic. But, without Devilfish support, they cry pretty hard. So, without further ado;

    Strike Team (x10) + DS8; Missile Pod - 100 Points

But, that's from the Battleforce. Do Strike Teams remain viable when you aren't getting them for 50-70% off?

    (0.85) Strike Team (x10) + DS8; Missile Pod - 100 Points
    (0.57) Kroot (x16) - 96 Points

...No. Sigh. But Kroot are really bad. *Huff*.
Wait. We need that second box of Crisis Suits, right? And we really want Fire Warriors, right? Why not just buy a second Battleforce? Sure, you'll get another Aun'Do model that you'll never use, but who cares!? The Ethereals are free so they they don't matter. But you get cost-effecient Fire Warriors!

    (W) Commander; C&C Node, MS3, Iridium - 145 Points

    Strike Team (x10) + DS8; Missile Pod - 100 Points
    Strike Team (x10) + DS8; Missile Pod - 100 Points

    XV8 Crisis Battlesuits (x5) - 270 Points
    x3; x2 Missile Pods
x2; x2 Fusion Blasters, Target Locks

    Total: 615 Points
0.45, so far. The Commander will get more effecient once we add more stuff to him, but, that's the base.
Right, 1850, we need four Troops.

    (0.57) Kroot (x16) - 96 Points
    (0.57) Kroot (x16) - 96 Points

In a sense, you could probably keep buying Battleforces until your wallet runs out. While that's certainly great for Rule #1, it's not great for Rule #2. If you want to hard break Rule #2, buy up to four Battleforces. You definitely should stop at four. Don't get a fifth, nobody needs more than 40 Fire Warriors, and only a crazy person wants more than 12 Crisis Suits. If you're spamming Crisis Suits that hard, you should be playing Farsight Enclaves, and if you're doing that, you're paying currency for Fire Warriors that you should never, ever use. But, that's not relevant to right now.

Currently, we only have four Fusion Blasters to deal with AV13+ Vehicles. Not good enough.

    (0.49) XV104 Riptide; Twin-Linked Fusion Blaster, Ion Accelerator - 185 Points
    (0.49) XV104 Riptide; Twin-Linked Fusion Blaster, Ion Accelerator - 185 Points

Now that that's covered, we need Skyfire.
Fliers have Skyfire. But Tau Fliers are terrible. So let's skip those.

    (0.82) Broadside Shas'ui - 90 Points
Twin-Linked High-Yield Missile Pod, Twin-Linked Plasma Rifles, Velocity Tracker

    Ew.

    (0.73) Sky Ray - 115 Points

    Oh, come on!
More Crisis Suits is certainly a possibility. But we've run out of Elite slots.

Alright, idea. We actually use one of those Ethereal models and split our Detachments. We want to ditch as many Kroot units as possible, and, if we're buying Crisis Suits, and we hate Kroot...You know what means...THIRD Battleforce. Extra Fusion Guns from the new box lets us muck about with our original team which frees up some of our points.

    (W) Commander; C&C Node, MS3, Iridium - 145 Points

    Strike Team (x10) + DS8; Missile Pod - 100 Points
    Strike Team (x10) + DS8; Missile Pod - 100 Points

    XV8 Crisis Battlesuits (x5) - 245 Points
    x4; x2 Fusion Blasters
    x1; Twin-Linked Flamer, VRT

    (0.49) XV104 Riptide; Twin-Linked Fusion Blaster, Ion Accelerator - 185 Points
    (0.49) XV104 Riptide; Twin-Linked Fusion Blaster, Ion Accelerator - 185 Points

Ethereal; Blacksun Filter - 55 Points

    Strike Team (x10) + DS8; Missile Pod - 100 Points
    Kroot (x16) - 96 Points

    XV8 Crisis Battlesuits (x3) - 216 Points
    x2 Missile Pods, Velocity Trackers

    Total: 1427 Points

Blacksun Filters give Night Vision, NV is passed to squads. Therefore, an Ethereal should always be taking one.
Is that all? Well, we do have x3 Battleforce boxes worth of Drones. Which makes 24 of them. I'm going to assume that you don't have access to Mont'ka (because that costs more money that you don't have), and that you can't field a Drone-Net VX1-0 Formation. But, this sentence right here is telling you to find Mont'ka, and that you should totally be fielding a Drone-Net. Just like if you can get the rules, you should upgrade your Ethereal to Aun'Do.

    24 Drones is 336 Points.

    Marker Drones (x8) - 112 Points
    Marker Drones (x8) - 112 Points
    Gun Drones (x8) - 112 Points

You've also got two Detachments with 3 Fast slots each. So six units of 4 is totally legal. Just know that something like that will give up a lot of Kill Points and easy Maelstrom Objectives.

    1763 Points

87 Points left. At this point, we're less worried about the currency cost, and we only want to jam in what will fit. Unfortunately, pretty much everything under 100 Points in the Tau book, sucks. So we'll take what we can get.
Eearly Warning Overrides on Riptides is basically mandatory. Since we probably wont be adding any new units, let's make the units we do have, even better. EWO & Stims on both Riptides takes 80 Points.
    Gives you 7 left.

The Neuroweb System Jammer is one of the only things in the book that you can take that costs 2 Points. Leaves you 5 Points. I'd suggest adding a Flamer - for Overwatch purposes - on the Commander.

    Tau Empire, CAD
    (W) Commander; Flamer, NSJ, C&C Node, MS3, Iridium - 152 Points

    Strike Team (x10) + DS8; Missile Pod - 100 Points
    Strike Team (x10) + DS8; Missile Pod - 100 Points

    XV8 Crisis Battlesuits (x5) - 245 Points
    x4; x2 Fusion Blasters
    x1; Twin-Linked Flamer, VRT

    XV8 Crisis Battlesuits (x3) - 216 Points
    x2 Missile Pods, Velocity Trackers

XV104 Riptide; Twin-Linked Fusion Blaster, Ion Accelerator, EWO, Stims - 225 Points

    Tau Empire, CAD
Ethereal; Blacksun Filter - 55 Points

    Strike Team (x10) + DS8; Missile Pod - 100 Points
    Kroot (x16) - 96 Points

XV104 Riptide; Twin-Linked Fusion Blaster, Ion Accelerator, EWO, Stims - 225 Points

    Gun Drones (x8) - 112 Points
    Marker Drones (x8) - 112 Points
    Marker Drones (x8) - 112 Points

    Total: 1850 Points

0.35 and requires three Battleforces and change. Here's to hoping that they stick around for a while.
Get Mont'ka, field a Drone-Net. Find the rules for Aun'Do, and field him too.
