I think it has been expressed in the past that many of these initial empty posts are to force the checkmark next to the thread (not saying it's the case this time; it's certainly not for me, since I depend on the browser changing the link to non-bold to know which threads I've read, which causes me trouble as I do browse from multiple computers). But still, it's a useful indicator of which threads one is interested in, and a victim of his own success in a way, since it can cause this issue. So, if I may ask, is there a way to force the checkmark without posting?

I do not believe that it's possible (given that the check is to show you've posted in it), hence why I try and make sure to give at least something semi-constructive in those sorts of threads quickly (before it's taken by someone more competent than I).
