Ehhhh, that all kind of makes it worse. It lasted about as long as the Empire. but at least the Empire took a concerted effort over years for the Rebellion to get it to fall. The First Order is almost entirely unknown, fires its big gun once, and in the title crawl for the next movie they're already reigning over the galaxy? The New Republic fell in like a day, to an enemy that was barely even a shadow of the Empire it took down.

That just makes the New Republic significantly worse.
