I somehow doubt V would have successfully escaped Xykon, even if he hadn't gone back to help O-Chul.
Xykon is crazy not to have some kind of Permanent Detect Invisibility or True Seeing effect going on in the first place.. but I'd say if V had just moved out of earshot of Xykon, Xykon would have done something to bring him back.
It makes no sense that someone with the power and resources of Xykon could be eluded by simply casting Invisibility and walking away.
So while V's motivations were probably heroic, the action he took was logical from even a neutral or evil point of view. Going for a chance at damaging or seriously distracting Xykon with O-Chul's aid would probably have a better chance of success than trying to run away while he's actively looking for you.
