    Default Quest XP

How do you guys figure out how much XP to give for completing a quest ?

    I'm running a 3.5 game with a group composed of 2 lvl5 characters and 4 lvl4 characters.

    This was the quest, btw

Well, I don't usually follow XP guidelines exactly, but I guess you could probably just give XP as if they had just beat an encounter against a creature with a CR equal to their level + 2 or so. (I'd say maybe a CR 7 encounter for your party.)

Give it a CR. Or give it a Flat Total.
I tend to use a Flat Total, and depending on the quest it can range from 100 through to 10000. If it is just a side quest or something that only is part of a greater quest, maybe 100 - 500 for that level of character. If it is a major quest or whatver, then maybe 500 - 1000 for that.

I calculate all XP for all encounters and add 3/6 of XP for all kinds of story archivements during the adventure. Then I also leave a small pool of 1/6 the encounter XP to give to the characters who had the greatest ideas and made the bigest contributions to solving the obstacles.

This makes 60% for encounters, 30% for story awards, and 10% that are distributed among the charactes like I see fit.

If it's a major quest, I'll often just give enough quest XP to make the party level up. If it's just a small side quest, I may not even give any quest XP at all; just let them take their spoils and run with it.

You could follow 4E's rule of giving XP as if the PCs had defeated a level-appropriate encounter. That way they don't just slog through encounter after encounter just to reach the next level.
