Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread II
:D I am so happy to already be receiving reviews of the Snap Dragon.
I had already come to the same conclusion as you and bumped up the dragon's int to 11. I'll admit, it was because I was looking at the MM entry for the pegasus and saw that it's intelligence was 10. I thought, 'there is no way in the nine hells I'm gonna make a dragon that's dummer than a flying horse.' <<;;;Half-elves are like slinkies.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread II
Snap Dragons almost certainly need an ability justifying the fact they get two bites for their full-attack.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread II
Just posted my first try into these contests! From an old legend about warriors springing from the ground where dragon's teeth were planted, but they're original enough otherwise, right?
Funny how my entry could share the same name with Shadow'sLast edited by Joxer t' Mighty; 2009-09-01 at 12:28 PM.
Helping others is a good and noble cause, but sometimes the best way you can help them is by lending them a sword and telling them to go slay their own damned dragons.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread II
Because according to the regular rules you can only get one bite attack per round without magic. You don't get iterative attacks with bites, becasue they're always considered secondary natural attacks (or at leat, every monster and character I've ever seen in any source, even if bite is its only attack, has used those rules. I could just be being clueless.) The problem isn't CR, it's just that unusual abilities are usually justified to prevent people from thinking they were mistakes.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread II
Right, it's not an iterative attack, it just gets two bites on a full attack action. But there's ways around it without using magic... like if you have two heads... but that's not the case here, why am I rambling like this?.
The problem isn't CR, it's just that unusual abilities are usually justified to prevent people from thinking they were mistakes.
EDIT from SRD: "A creature’s primary natural weapon is its most effective natural attack, usually by virtue of the creature’s physiology, training, or innate talent with the weapon. An attack with a primary natural weapon uses the creature’s full attack bonus."
so yea, the primary natural attack is his bite, since it's the only natural attack it has.
Also from SRD:"Creatures do not receive additional attacks from a high base attack bonus when using natural weapons. The number of attacks a creature can make with its natural weapons depends on the type of the attack—generally, a creature can make one bite attack... Refer to the individual monster descriptions."
As far as I can tell, there is no "rule" that states how many attacks it can have (other than the iterative thing, but as I said before that's not the case here). From what I see, it's up to the creator of the monster.Last edited by Sir Shadow; 2009-09-02 at 12:14 AM.

In regards to Slaad's dragon victim, maybe its "Draconic Loathing" ability should also make it immune to dragons' Frightful presence?

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread II
Oooh goodie. Dragons. I've designed a couple of dragons but posted them a long while back. Can I enter one in this contest or do I have to make up a whole new one?
DebbyP.E.A.C.H. Please Evaluate And Critique Honestly. Being nicer and kinder doesn't hurt either. Note I generally only critique 3.5 and Pathfinder material.
Please, please, please when using non-core material, cite to the books. There are too many books to wade through to find the one with the feat, special ability or spell you use.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread II
I think the dracolocust swarm's CR could be raised a little. Mostly due to the HP and how much damage it does.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread II
I'd say 7 or 8. Swarms can be countered very well by certain things, but there are a lot of classes that would have problems against them. Also, I'd suggest giving them the (Fire) subtype.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread II
Some of them most certainly do... Golds and Reds are [Fire] for instance, while Silvers and Whites are [Cold]. Some of the Crystal dragons are [Earth], and I know I went ahead any made my Wing Dragons [Air] and nobody said a word against it...

Oh dur. I was still thinking about crunch and the template 'Half-Dragon' specifically. Also, are you implying that... ewww....
but still... it should be noted that Half-Dragons receive an immunity but no weakness, unlike the dracolocusts.Half-elves are like slinkies.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread II
Yeah, I didn't want to take away one method of dealing with swarms at lower levels (being able to use a torch to damage them) without giving them some weakness in return.

My PC is crapping out so I prolly won't be able to do a regular dragon, I'll have to do a related entity if I can even do that (but I notice most of the entries are like that anyway).

I took one look at true dragons and stifled a snort. Unless you have one you've already written up, that's quite a lot of work to do. So I chickened out.
