Yeah, I'd say "it's better for me if I'm a team player" is definitely character development. He's learned a better way to achieve his goals, evil though they may be.

I meant long term goals. Those are more along the lines of enjoyment.

I think one reason people don't want Belkar to go is that it would be a waste of his recent character development. I for one would like to see where that goes, so I agree it would be a shame if he dies soon.

I think Belkar is going to die because of his recent character development. In order to be a team player, I think Belkar will eventually sacrifice himself in order to save another Order member. Maybe Haley. He'll have become so used to helping his team for a change that he will sacrifice himself before he knows what he's doing. Like so:
