an online D&D game.

is there an online sort of VR version of D&D. I mean more like a video game rather than a play by post. I want some DM experience before DMing a game next summer and lets just say my cousins and brother wouldn't be the best judges.

the oldest is 14 (my brother) then the ages are like 12, 10, 10, 9 and 8 and they've only ever played one other campaign. that one went over well but it wasn't exactly a real 4th edition game.

There's the campaign creation tool in Neverwinter Nights and its sequel, but then you'd have to actually buy the games. Just running a PbP is easier, and in my opinion more useful for learning how to DM, as you have to actually describe things.

while the scripting language in NWN is not too difficult to learn, developing stuff for it really DOES take a lot of effort.

it might be easier just to get an online mapping client and play via chat or something. Actually, I think there are tools out there you can use for this kind of thing like openRPG, I believe.

There Are Plenty of programs for playing online if you take a look. Then you only need to recruit players, either through these boards, Mythweavers are any other method.

If you want to DM, NWN or NWN2 is your best bet. There's also DDO, but I have no idea how good that is, what ruleset it uses, etc.

DDO is kind of like an MMORPG version of neverwinter nights. It's balanced to be more like an MMO of course, with skills having a lot of different usages (Bluff to gain a sneak attack, intimidate to taunt enemies to attack you, stuff like that.)

Though as a game it isn't very fun.

I'm going to have to second the rptools line of programs. They're perfect.

A game with NWN would be cool. It was pretty hard to make anything when it came down to conversations and other interactions. Those persistent worlds were really neat though.
