Sentient Velociraptor
Based on this, I decided to create this creature for fun.
Feel free to criticize the potential of simulating fluff and/or plausibility for such an encounter as this one.

Talking Supergenius Dinosaur is exactly like a deinonychus except for the fact that his skin is of a tan color with a sandy colored overstripe. He has all the racial features of the deinonychus, which include the following:
Pounce (Ex)
If a deinonychus charges, it can make a full attack.
Skills
A deinonychus has a +8 racial bonus on Hide, Jump, Listen, Spot, and Survival checks.
Non-humanoid (trait)
Although this creature acquires all the benefits of being an animal, they suffer -2 to DCs with spells that have somatic components and DCs as well as those with material components. All checks to do with tools and/or materials suffer a +4 to the DC of such checks.
Because the creature is an animal, they never automatically have any proficiencies (aside from natural weapons) unless granted proficiency through class levels and/or some other means.
Non-proficiency with a weapon/shield means that this creature will be unable to use that weapon/shield at all.
The deinonychus does in fact have something close to what resemble fingers and so it suffers no racial penalties towards using weapons it is proficient with - use of tools and somatic components still suffer however due to the lack of necessary manual dexterity provided by its natural manipulators.

Re: Sentient Velociraptor
Natural spell doesn't even make sense in terms of plausibility unless magic didn't necessarily exist to be manipulated by people with larynxes (just by coincidence, it is) - thus any creature could technically be accustomed to casting if they utter the right 'language' or 'way' or whatever.

Re: Sentient Velociraptor
So, do any warforged action scientists hate him, perchance?
Also: The purple haired snarker bit is a runaways reference. One of the characters has a psychic dinosaur.Last edited by chiasaur11; 2009-06-01 at 11:29 PM.

Re: Sentient Velociraptor
Then make up an LA.
And the idea was that if you were using the 'genius' dinosaur that it would be implied that it could also speak common for the sole purpose of being an implausibly hilarious NPC.
Besides, it's not hard to make an LA for a deinonychus animal companion (probably +1 or 2, just off the top of my head... usually it's about half CR for 'minimum ECL').
But if you really want a cohort, go ahead and use the genius, it doesn't actually matter to me.

Re: Sentient Velociraptor
Yes, the saving throw DC.
Should it be permanent passive spell failure chance instead?
But there's no reason to think you know how to make those utterances

Does anyone here think this creature should be added to the homebrew monster compendium (it's not completely new... it's a dirivation)?
Isn't there a directory of homebrewed monsters (from past competitions/etc.) on this forum?Last edited by imp_fireball; 2009-06-09 at 12:54 AM.
