Edit: Actually, since the cloister spell makes the place scry proof, it is unlikely a pre-epic caster could see they were in trouble and pull them out. So its more likely that MiTD did it.

The camera zooms in on his eyes as he says "escape", and then they vanish right in time? I have a feeling it was the MitD, or at least something directly caused by him.

Alternatively, what kind of creature has a transport spell like ability and can use it without touching or moving itself?
