Default Test Of Spite, Sallera's entrance, Dungeon Instance [3.5]

As you claim your victory, and reach for the spoils, you see a rapidly rolling bank of fog. In the back of your head, a small voice shouts "Run!" The fog seems to move in from every direction, sweeping over you in a hot and humid wave. The cavern falls away as bright hot sunlight beats down on you. You find yourself stranded in the middle of an enormous desert, composed of almost entirely flat black sand dunes. There's no features, and a steady wind blows away your footprints.

Welcome to the Test of Spite Dungeon. This is a trap-and-puzzle dungeon, the first trap being the area you are currently in. I wish you the very best of luck.

A clear voice carries across the sands.

I didn't want that Third Eye anyway...

Is there any audible echo? Regardless of the answer, I'll pull out my wand of Lesser Vigor and attempt to patch up some of the numerous holes Talic left in me. UMD (1d20+14)[18].

No echo is audible in any fashion. In fact, sound seems deadened here, as though travelling through brass. After further examination, you realize you are on what appears to be a gently sloping hill that stretches to the horizon.

Alright. Going to try the wand again. UMD (1d20+14)[32]. UMD (1d20+14)[22]. UMD (1d20+14)[27]. UMD (1d20+14)[23]. UMD (1d20+14)[33].

Right, so presuming that after five and a half minutes of healing, there've been no noticeable occurences, Kerra will activate the Ring of Blinking and attempt to move downward into the ground.

You tumble down a 100 foot shaft into the dungeon proper, passing through a portal on your way down. Your stint in Sigil lasts about seven seconds as you fall into another oddly convenient portal. You find yourself standing on the immense parapets of what appears to be a castle, with your location set in one of the highest turrets. Beside you is a book, a lever, and a trapdoor downward, as well as a small sack of rations. The area you are in is open to the sky, which is suffused with a dim moonlight.

    Knowledge(Planes) if you like.

    Very clever, by the way!

Thanks. Beats digging, at any rate...

    Untrained Knowledge(Planes): (1d20+2)[19].

    Interesting place you've got here.

UMD another Lesser Vigor ((1d20+14)[23]), to ease the sting of attempting to materialize in solid objects, and then take a cautious look at the book (Search for traps: (1d20+10)[21]).

((I had one guy yell at me and quit the challenge when I mentioned shovels, insisting that they were completely useless and that digging was a ridiculous idea. Laughed all the way to my favorite thai restaurant))

The book is untrapped. Written in a flowing cursive, it lays out the basic guidelines of the challenge within the context of your character's understanding. You now know that the dungeon is intentionally lethal, is intended as punishment for grudges, and combined with your knowledge(planes) check, you know that you are now in the demi-plane of dread. Escape seems highly improbable.

At the back of the book, you find a short note in an unsteady hand:
"They won't let me stay dead."
A small map is attached, crudely drawn with what appears to be charcoal. It lays out the next two rooms, but gives no information on what lies inside them or how to get down into the castle proper safely from your current perch.

    Additional tid-bits from a solid know(Planes):
Portals do not normally maintain momentum.
Despite the eerie lighting, Ravenloft has a fairly normal day-night cycle.
Avoid mists and fog banks. ((I know, seems a little late, but it'll be a regular occurrence if you aren't careful))

Hmm, interesting... Check the rations to see if there's anything out of the ordinary ((1d20+10)[23]), then search the lever ((1d20+10)[11]) and trapdoor ((1d20+10)[25]) for traps.

Well, I'm certainly not tasting anything I find around here. I did bring a bag of Everlasting Rations, I'm essentially checking to see if these are poisoned/trapped/etc. or, if not, if there's something in there aside from just rations.

Heavily poisoned, nothing else in the bag at all. The lever appears safe, but the trapdoor is heavily.... trapped.

And this is why I wish I'd thought ahead.

Well, with Kerra's abysmal DD mod, I might be better off just pulling the lever and getting it over with... but anyway, I'll activate the Ring of Blinking, then attempt a few Disable checks on the door's traps, if possible.

Passed both. As you pluck a dart out of your shoulder, you feel the parapet melt and shudder underneath your feet. You narrowly dodge as the castle itself tries to toss you off the turret. The ground folds back up, leaving no hint of its momentary treachery.

You know, all of a sudden I'm not so eager to use the door. Of course, I'm equally reluctant to charge in blindly, but...

I'll grab the bag of poisoned rations, then reactivate my blinking and phase downward through the floor, just to the side of the trapdoor.
(1d2)[1] - on 1, take (1d6)[4] damage before making it out (presuming, of course, that the floor is only a couple feet thick).

To your extreme discomfort, you find that there is no room below you whatsoever, or perhaps merely that the floor is very thick.
Please tell me how deep you opted to try and go. I'm really hoping you didn't pick 10 feet.

Well, it doesn't really matter, as I rolled a 1, which means I'm shunted out from 5 feet down to the closest open space.

May I revise 'interesting' to 'highly twisted'? With my luck, it's probably not safe to rest around here either... well, I suppose it's back to poking things with deadly traps on them.

Going to take a piece of the poisoned rations and jam it through the trapdoor as soon as I go ethereal, then drop it and see if it pops out again.

(( Incidentally, did I get the gear Talic granted me, or did my rather abrupt exit prevent that? ))

    ((Okay, character sheet updated.))

Geh, what's in there, a bloody portal? Mayhaps a door into the rock to waste my time?

Reactivating the ring, I'll use the bag of rations to push the lever, attempting to hold it between me and any potential trap effect.

The center of the parapet begins to unsteadily descend, as the bag of rations catches fire with a great deal of rapidity. While unsettling, the descent of the parapet does not appear to be directly harmful.

Ninth curse! So much for using those to poison someone... at least they served a good purpose. May as well see where this leads.

Drop the remains of the bag before I start losing fingers, then hop onto the descending portion, keeping the Blinking up in case nasty things happen since nasty things will almost certainly happen.
