Default Ultimate Magus with wizard alone

    Thanks, Spontaneous Divination.

The obvious: I'm making a wizard who is using the ACF Spontaneous Divination from Complete Champion to qualify for Ultimate Magus. I'm not going to get super-accelerated caster growth out of it (it might be interpreted that way for some, but remember that this is a character I will be playing), and the wording for Augmented Casting precludes using the slots from a single class to pay for metamagic (it would be too costly to fuel with just wizard levels anyway). Basically, the only thing I gain out of it are bonus feats at levels I would have had them as a wizard without Spontaneous Divination, and Expanded Spell Knowledge.

At 2nd level, Expanded Spell Knowledge lets me choose a 1st level spell to cast spontaneously, then a 2nd level spell at 4th level, then a 3rd level spell at 6th, then a 4th at 8th, and a 5th level spell at 10th.

I am asking for suggestions on what spells to make spontaneous, and other character options that would be helpful. I'm a conjuration specialist who's banned evocation and enchantment. I'm not trying to be a sorceror; I'm still in love with wizard spellcasting diversity and its superior growth is precious to me.

Other info: I'm a silverbrow human (Dragon Magic), which will let me pick up Practical Metamagic. Almost all official 3.5 books are in, but Dragon magazine, 3.0 material, anything setting-specific, and homebrew are all out. 28 point buy, probably going for 8/14/14/18/8/8. Feats I'm planning for are Quicken Spell (Human), Sculpt Spell (1), Metamagic School Focus (3), Practical Metamagic (Quicken Spell)(6), and I have no idea from there. I want Arcane Thesis but I don't know what spell I want to be Quickening with it. I doubt the campaign will reach or go beyond 15th level.

    • Warlock Power Sources [3.5]: Making Hellfire Warlock part of the base class and providing other similar options for Warlocks whose powers don't come from devils.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by "Not trying to be a sorcerer"?

It seems like the obvious thing to do would be to load up on metamagic-friendly spells: Heighten and a compliment of Save-or-Sucks, Enervation and all of the obvious metamagics that go with it, or Still+Silent and a teleportation spell as your get-out-of-jail free card. Maybe an Energy Substitution or two.

That way, you can fill your wizard slots with interesting and fun things, but always have a plan B.

    Also, Dispel Magic.

Well, if you're getting spontaneous casting out of it, you might want rapid metamagic to go with it; maybe Silent Spell as well.

Other than that, i guess you're looking at the usual suspects: Split Ray, Empower, Spell Focus etc.

BTW, do you get to apply Arcane Spell Power +4, so you're CL 19 at lvl 15?
