    Sanger... SOMBOLD?!

I'm not lol'ing, but an amused smirk won't leave my face for hours. But then, this is the Lean Horse Jr fantranslation so I shouldn't be surprised.

The save I checked wasn't a New Game+ and the BGM settings were there.

First time I played through OG1 I put Russel in the SF-29 fighter you get because i disliked him that much.
Wha... But Russel is great! His lack of personality makes him so bland that the number overflows and makes him badass and awesome. He's the 2nd most interesting man alive.

Sanger Sombold is one piece of AGTP fanwankery that actually makes sense, as Sombold was a German weapons designer, and a lot of other Banpresto Originals are named after weapons manufacturers of some kind (Nanbu, Browning, Ingram, Astranagant...)

I've had a very hard time not adding a character named "Weston Smith" to my SRW-based PbP game.

Lean Horse Jr. is still retarded, but unfortunately it seems to be the official transliteration. Then again, this is the same company who gave us such gems as Palace Athene and Cybaster on their model kits.

As for Pilot BGMs, you can use more of them on a New Game+: So Close Yet So Far becomes an option for Lamia, for example, and you can use themes that are "unlocked" later in the game from the start, like Ryoto's Ace Attacker.

EDIT: And Ken Kon Itteki/Samurai Sword > Gate of Magus for Sanger.

That was what I was thinking of.

And I did actually USE Russel, slapped Repair/Supply on his jet for highly mobile repairs...only for him not to be able to dodge anythign well enough tog et close enough to repair people.

    @all Gate of Magus detractors:

I still stand on my position. The song makes Zengar/Sanger even more menacing, if only by the fact that it changes the heroic theme of "I'm gonna kick your buttocks!!" to the more somber "you gonna get cleaved in parts you never imagined could be cleaved!!".

Furthermore, and I dunno why, villains' songs are usually much better than heroic songs. There are exceptions around: Folka's Crimson Shura God definitely makes honor to the meaning, Time Diver is epic in it's own way, Neppu! Shippu! Cybuster! stands as a song of hope, and Trombe!...well, it has no need for explanations.

However, most heroic songs can't compare to The Gate of Magus, or The Dark Knight (Axel's theme, and by far one of my faves, but GBA version >>>> PS2 version), The Arrow of Destiny (which was the former boss song of the Septuagint), Marionette Messiah (Levi's theme song), Dark Prison (Shu's theme song), Messenger from the Void (Ingram's theme song as villain), and let's not forget CHAOS (aka, SPOILER's theme song)

    @Tengu:
You know it to be true. Gate of Magus is epic. The other two actually turn BORING after some time; Gate of Magus still remains awesome each and every time. I actually think it fits him better.
Mentioning this because you Phoenix-Wrighted' me.
    @anything else:

--Never repeat a mission. That, IIRC, invalidates the Battle Mastery point, and if you want to face the real boss, you DON'T want to lose those points.

--So Close, yet So Far is unlocked by the last missions. In fact, it's available right after the second to last mission (or third-to-last, if you achieved all Battle Masteries), so it can be placed on Lamia at the very end of the game. Also, other people get extra BGMs (Excellen gets Alchemist's Query, aka Alchemie's song)

Well, Dark Knight and Marionette Messiah are both used for those characters when they're good guys...

I don't know, I guess the difference between Sword of Magus and Sanger's OG themes is that the former emphasizes Cleaving Evil and the latter emphasizes Cleaving Evil.

Yeah, but he's not supposed to be menacing in that way to the player, only to his enemies. Gate of Magus is a great theme for someone you fight against, not someone who's on your side.

Plus, Sword That Cleaves Evil is a song with mass - you can really feel that it's a theme for a huge-ass, heavy, unstoppable robot. Gate of Magus lacks that.

As for villain/hero theme songs, I think there's an equal amount of epic in each. The fact that the final themes of most SRW games tend to be JAM Project songs adds some confusion here, because it's hard to decide what they qualify for. The best bad guy theme surely belongs to the biggest bastard, though.

Not to derail the thread, but that talk about Spirit skills made me want to make a no-spirit run (no New game+). Is that possible? should I just forget battle masteries? make an exception for Valor for the purpose of killing retreating bosses to stay in Hard mode?

If you want a challenge, but generally you don't. Some of the reasons are because if you don't use Seishin/Spirit commands on late game, the game WILL abuse on you. Most of the time, a well-placed Focus is the difference between the next turn and an awful Game Over. That +30% to accuracy and evasion surely shows it.

And Valor is almost a need. This is the kind of stuff that allows you to go from 10,000 damage to 20,000 damage, when the boss is capable of repairing 30,000 HP (or more!) in a single turn. Hard Mode can turn quite impossible, mostly because you can't level-grind in this game, by virtue of the limit on turns, enemies and whatnot.

    @Tengu:
I don't see why Sanger should be more menacing for me... I listened to Ken Kon Itteki on various versions (GBA, PS2) and it doesn't have the same oomph that Gate of Magus offers. And I've listened to songs that truly inspire heroes. Perhaps it's too much bias, but I can't imagine Sanger without Gate of Magus.

The heroic side lacks a few epics:
Beowulf: has the heroic oomph, but it's not a song that I loop-listen. That usually tells me if I like it or not.

Fairy Dang/Sing: it's epic, but on another league. To me, it's the ultimate lullaby I'd put to my little niece, or perhaps a daughter if I were to have one.

Platinum Lucifer: it's a comedy theme. Where's the epic on that? Sure, it fits, but it's not particularly epic.

Ace Attacker: it's a song I grew quickly bored off. Not in seconds flat, but certainly not something I'd consider heroically epic.

Ace Attacker W: a much better version, but nothing I particularly go and listen to.

Code ATA: upon the higher tier of epic songs, but as I mentioned, So Close, Yet So Far beats it by the classical mile (or equivalent expression)

Shooting Star (Cut Through the Night): aka Ibis' song. It doesn't even try to be epic.

Ice Man/Cool as Ice: it's actually somber. Pretty somber.

...I could mention others, if I could recall their names (oddly enough, I don't have them nearby)

Cherry Blossom Illusion is debatable. Mostly, since it sounds pretty heroic, but it's held nearly several missions by a villain. Poor, poor Ouka.

And then, the songs that are inherited from Heel Face Turns. Axel keeps his song, which is pretty epic and somehow odd for being a villain (which shows why he had to become an antivillain at first, then a reformed antihero afterwards). And let's not speak of Mai...her song could only change if she was on, say, the Banpreios? Then add Alchemie to the mix, and...
I dunno you, but for me, an epic heroic song on the line of SRW should be only steps lower from Crimson Shura God, which I consider one, if not THE, quintessential heroic song.

Not every pilot has an epic theme because it simply doesn't fit many characters. Imagine Excellen with a theme like this? Doesn't fit at all. There are still many epic themes on the protagonists' side, and when you add them up there will be a similar amount of them as epic villain themes, if not more.

I'm not sure do I agree here. When I listen to this theme, I hear determination and the will to achieve your dreams. That's pretty epic.

He has the Kyosuke with the mustache and monocle right? Yeah, that's totally Beowulf. I can just seem him twirling his mustache and cackling evilly after unloading his Claymores on Axel.

And yeah, don't repeat missions unless you don't care about fighting the final boss. Or it's one of the last missions and you already have the masteries needed. I think the number you need is like 38? Which means you can fail like, 2 missions. Choose them wisely if you want to farm kills for money and exp.

Wow, that made me think. They have done it several times: Viletta, Cobray, Beowulf, Alchemie, Asakim, Wotan, if you want to count it then Levi, perhaps Ratsel...am I forgetting anyone?
And Lemon, too, if you want to count her as well...
I wonder...will they do it again? Is it possible? Who else will suffer this?

Episode VII: the lord of the super robots

    Intro
    Spoiler
    Show

There's always a problem...Hey, wait, what the hell is that?

Watch who? The alien hordes who attack us every other year? Thenn I must say you've been doing a pretty lousy job.

Ok now I just don't get anything. Perhaps this is just a random dream...

We? Well silly me, of course those mysterious dudes have their own mysterious organizations

Yeah humans aren't perfect. And that's why I got a job. Definetely need to cut down the booze...

Ah, finally, something that makes some sense. As much sense as the DC does anyway.

Planning their next move as usual. I miss the time when we were the ones doing the guerilla tactics, not needing to care about defending bases(since we pretty much had none standing anyway).

Another ally? Why does it seem that everybody out there wants to fight alongside the DC?

Rrriiighhttt, of course there's some ancient super robot buried out there that nobody noticed untill now. Not only does it look like a fairy tale, any robot built centuries ago would be pretty much obsolete by now.

But of course! Aliens with super robots isn't enough! We also need demons and ancient sacred robots duh to have a proper war!

Ok, royal member or not, the guy's completely nuts. Let's see what's going on the next psionic channel...

Aw, how cute, making up excuses to don't need to fight and get her ass kicked again.

Mental note: saving civilians from the devastated conflict zone may increase popularity. Hmm, perhaps this explains why the DC still has so much suport, since we only really cared about saving proved super robot pilots. On the other hand, who needs the suport of the people when you've got your own super robot army?

Ah, so it seems the reason the moe girl is an idiot is because she's overloaded with drugs.

Oh, Lamia just found out that I had been tinkering with her secret little toy. What a shame I'm so clumsy and now she can't communicate with the outside in secret anymore. Well, time to go check the troops...

Whitout anything to blow up, moral was droping fast.

I couldn't really say that we had no clue where the DC was, so we just sit and waited for now.

Rai had taken the time to go visit his family grave. It's a big grave after all.

If I had my own mothership like Rai's older brother, Elzam, has, I would've also taken some private vacations somewhere quiet after the war.

Damn she got me there. You don't need to be a genius to know ELZAM, TROMBE HERO!!!

    Hurrah! Some action finally!

Wow so they are really going after some fairy tale! I wonder if this is somewhat related to that first halluciation I had...

    The light! It burns!

Ok, I really don't know who those guys are, but for once they don't seem to be allied with the DC, wich is kinda relieving.

Wait, so there's a mechanoid out there?
Dibs on whatever is in that excavation site!
Not fair wa! I still have mass produce trash wa!
Ok, let's do it like this. Whoever brings back more enemy skulls gets first pick on the loot down there.
So I can get out of this pile of sh*** if I get more kills? Hurrah!

Yes baby, being a super robot pilot isn't just fun and blowing stuff up, there's also hard worck to do.

Oh so now you're worrying about colateral damage are you?

It seems Archibald was finally revealing his true villain facet. There will be no place in the ATX team for him.

Choatic evil villain. Those shots weren't even aimed at the ruins, but the diggers trying to run away.

And now I remember why we didn't trust the DC to protect the Earth.

Indeed. I don't mind killing civilians who are on the path to my target, I don't mind using them as meat shields either, but shooting them for target practise is just a waste of perfectly good cannon fodder and ammo.

Luckily, with the DC wasting so much time slaughtering the diggers and discussing among themselves, we managed to arrive at the battle zone.

Excellen is feeling weird? My first instict was to order an immedite retreat. Then I remembered the ATX team never retreats. But Excellen also never feels weird...

You're inside a sealed giant robot! How the hell can you feel that????

Kai finally remembered us what we were being paid for.

The DC seemed to be waiting for us...I didn't intend to disapoint them.
Ok, everybody, let's finish this as fast as possible so that we can, mmmhhh, what was it...
Save the maximum number of civilians possible?
    Yeah, that too. CHARGE!

    Battle, 1st part

Acelerate! Red ones do go faster!

Grungust tank mode! Transform and roll out!

It was good to see that the fear of the grungust was still fresh on the DC pilot's mind. The not very practical design is more than compensated for the moral effect that it inflicts on the enemy.

Latooni! Why aren't you wearing your uniform?
It disapeared from my locker today wa!
I gave permission to Lat to wear her cosplays untill we get more uniforms
    And that will be when?
Oh, a couple years, no more, tehehe Isn't she just adorable?

Rai finally joined the fray with his shiny new R2.

Boy always was a fan of Scorpion from Mortal kombat.

It was worth noting that the DC had very few troops this time. Could this be a hint they were finally running low on resources?

Ok, now I was geting worried, and I NEVER get worried. If someone was behind from this, I would make them wish they were never born. Nobody messes with my girl like this and gets away with it...

Teleport? But...Las time I checked there wasn't anyone left on Earth with that techonlogy...

Skeleton wearing plants? SKELETONS WEARING PLANTS? Oh, why do I bother? I really shouldn't be suprised with everything I've already seen. As long as we can blow them up...

Well, at least the DC seemed to be as suprised with their arrival as us.

Great, just I and Excellen seem to be able to hear them, and they don't really seem to be willing for peacefull talks.

Ok, ok, I admit you're not as crazy as I thought you were.

The DC proceeded to repeat their motto of run to so you can fight run away in another day.

Yeah just what we needed. You know, if they don't want to wake up whatever's down there, they really shouldn't be shooting at it...

    Battle, 2nd part.

I really didn't know what was going on there, but I decided that blowing up those ecologic skeletons should be the best way to heal Excellen's headache.

The first type of enemy seemed to be some kind of giant flower wich shot death lasers.

    Also their aim sucked.

The second type were some kind of demonic skeletons wich used their own horns as boomerangs.

Anyway, they seemed to be vulnerable to our standard and nonstandard weaponry, and that was what really mattered.

Rai finally got pissed off and pulled out his supreme weapon. I just hoped he would target on the oposite side of the ruins, otherwise there would be nothing to recover...

Who needs oversized swords when you have oversized cannons?

There would always be some healthy rivarly between those two...

Despite their bad aim, the enemies had plenty of numbers on their side, and our mechas were being slowly grinded down.

You probably don't know how much truth there is in that sentence. But he was right. Our mechas were being grinded down, but our spirits were strenghtening, and with big spirits, come BIG guns!

Wing gust mode! To the skies!

Oxtongue rifle E, exterminatus mode! Get out of the way guys!

We had defeated those demonic skeletons(and pretty much rebuilt the landscape), but Archibald and his brainwashed minions had managed to run away. But he can't run forever..

We invited the head of the diggers on the Hagane for debriefing.

And some praise always felt good.

So there's indeed a super robot burried somewhere down there...

Hmm, that kinda explains why the grungust type O from the major is so powerfull. It still doesn't explain who built those stuff.

Madness? THIS. IS. SUPER ROBOT WAAAAARRRRRRS!!!!!

In ancient times people created giant robots to fight demons???? Damn I really should've paid atention to History lessons instead of reading so much manga.

Great Ryuusei has entered his super robot fanboy mode. Somebody please hold him before I shoot him in the leg....

Well that was a lot of centuries ago. Of course that if you had a super robot when everybody else had swords and bows at best that you could change the fate of an entire nation, thank you very much.

And it can think by itself? Fits more and more with today's hallucination...

Also explains how he got his grungust with pure gold and platinium plating plus the diamond carved controls. Stupid rich powerfull families...

Ah, good old Irm, never giving up on any women with finished education.

We went for the debriefing room to see if we could figure out what the hell those skeletons were. And how to best kill them.

The conversation ended up turning to the reason to why only I and Excellen had heard them. Wich meant we had to prove we were still (relatively) sane and hadn't just been brainwashed and waiting for the right moment to betray humanity.

Sorry dear, but I would rather die than believe in the power of love for winning battles. Friendship I can somewhat admit, but love is for the bed, not the battlefield.

Yeah, that's right, none of us really knows much about Excellen's past. I saved her from a crashed shuttle, but we never really figured out from where she had come from. Most of the team doesn't know it however.

You can't evade me forever little girl. One day I'll know who you really are, and then...

Oh, great, another secret contact on the DC's side.

Wait, nonhumans? Now you're also traficking with the aliens? Or is her an ally of the demons?

Ok, this was geting creepy. They seemed to be a public company. And willing to sell out their own species. Something had to be done...

I called the team, went back to the bridge and found Eri:
If the life or death of my subordinates can help us recover that super robot, then you have my revolver stake.
    And my oxtongue rifle!
    And my phalic g-cannon!
    Y-You have my b-bow!
    And my war skill!
    Plus my gaming skillz!
    You have my geniality!
    And mine also wa!
And my phone number! Just joking, I meant the grungust.
Haaarrr, there's no helping to it... So I thereby declare the formation of the brotherhood of the super robot, to go and unite all super robots under our banner to fight whatever threat's forming in the horizon!

Good. If the DC and their secret buddies wanted war, they would have it.

(uff, finally managed to make the update. Will go to that other thread register my LP as soon as possible. There weren't secrets in this level right?)

Nope, not any. Except attempting to beat Carla for the Stealth Boomerang, but you have other chances to do so. I think...

Still...see? All you need to do is threaten Oslecamo into summoning Asakim and all of a sudden, he appears. After a brief intervention with an artifact that the rich and the poor are certain to visit, one way or another.

But he's getting the point, that Bullet. More kills, more stuff for him. Even if, oddly enough, he can't equip the Shish...oh wait, that's spoilerific. Nevermind, then, you may already know what I was gonna say.

It's that kind of thing that makes me angry with Atlus, Namco Bandai and Banpresto at times...

The Asakim card did work, but you realize now that I've played it nothing else will have the same effect. Nothing can beat Asakim, he is too much of an very mean person.
And yes, SRW games really like Evil Twins/clones/alternate reality selves. Each title seems to have at least two. And that's only including original characters, not counting included anime series that have them as well.

Now, on Let's Play, things are going great I see. Plot is advancing, Archie shows how much of a psycho he is, Kai uses his most badass Jet Magnum quote. I'm surprised you actually transform Grungust, I usually keep it in robot mode unless the enemy is really far, when I use Wing Gust to reach 'em fast. But we already discussed that.

Don't want to spoil anything, but I wonder which mission will be next. Checking now.

Ah. The next mission will be okay, I guess. But the one after it, #9... oh yes, we have things worth waiting for.

Now, it's time for more of my wishful thinking that there are people who read this that didn't play OG2 yet and I can persuade them to try out a Super Robot Wars game by posting cool movies.

R-2 Powered, PS2 version. The only OG2 version I could find had attacks of R-1 and R-3 as well, and we don't want to spoil that yet, do we? Besides, even in this movie Rai is fighting the Einst mysterious plant-covered skeletons. Notice how Hi Zol Launcher has two versions in the PS2 version.

I really wanted to link Hagane, because Daitetsu is one badass grandpa and deserves it. But youtube failed me once again.

Well, I guess I should store the combined awesomeness of Baram Dobam and Vat Van Tran...

They are one of the few epitomes of "antagonist you hate to see die"...or the trope equivalent to that.

Baram Dobam is the only villain whose song trumps Trombe!, and that offers some serious challenge to Sanger. The song is frickin' heroic.

And then, there's Van Vat Tran. Colonel Van Vat Tran. Who could inspire tears of awesomeness from a lowly Rhinoceros, if only because he was such a caring leader in a rotten nest of buttock-wipes. Beating Grims to a pulp is satisfying, less cathartic and almost exciting. Beating Aguila is also refreshing...way too refreshing, I'd say: almost as refreshing as making sure Asakim falls, stays down, and gets karmic punishment as it should. But seeing Vat fall...it's disheartening.

    So yeah...

I'm just glad you don't kill Baran Doban, but rather recruit him. And if one awesome theme song is not enough, then there's Land Crasher and Makenaize! Gunleon. They sound so similar to Ware Koso Wa Baran Doban, I swear Rand is his son or something like that.

As for Van... yeah. I knew the man's a goner since his first appearance. We salute you, Totally-Not-Ramba-Ral-Expy.

It's a shame that, the way SRW is going, we won't probably see another aspect of Sanger.

Yeah, it's funny to hear "real men ride each other", most of the time. But why it is so terrible to have such a good best friend, and so terrible to forget that Sanger can also be a great parent!?
Yes, Irui, I'm talking about you.
The amount of original content in SRW hasn't even been completely exploited yet! They handled most of the Alpha series, the originals (even up to Hero Senki), SRW A, Impact, and even Compact. But, where's...J, I'd say? (Touya? Calvina? Where are you!?) Heck, what has happened to the Masoukishin aside form Masaki and Shu? When we will see Tytti? ...Heck, when we will see the DaiRaiOh, of all things?

Banpresto is getting lazy...no wonder Atlus is getting so bad with us Americans on that regard.
