cool Bake Sales for the Goddess of Vengeance (3.5: PEACH)

Because every successful church needs a good fundraiser! This is set in my homebrew setting of Vere, but it could be adapted to other settings fairly easily. Quick vocab: Neftsalyi'dam is the nation, Rivia is the CE goddess of vengeance.

    Overview
    Spoiler
    Show
While the church of Rivia isn’t particularly popular in Neftsalyi’dam, most of the larger cities have a shrine to her. Donations from common folk hoping for better insight- or misfortune to someone who has wronged them- are common but not nearly enough to fill the coffers. More substantial donations come from moderately wealthy individuals who’ve chosen Rivia as their patron, such as scryers and diviners. To bring in extra income, however, the church turned to pastry-making.

The practice began in the city of Hellatia. A priest of Rivia had come from a family of bakers and still worked in their shop part-time to keep himself fed; the shrine he worked at simply wasn’t bringing in enough revenue. He prayed to Rivia to help him make the shrine more successful so that he might be able to devote more time to her alone. The next morning, he awoke to find his hands dripping blue blood, though he was unharmed. As he attempted to wipe it off, it faded before his eyes. A clear sign that Rivia had heard his prayers, he went about his day with much satisfaction. Weeks went by though, and there was no change in donations to the shrine. Oddly, the business and success of his family’s bakery doubled, to the extent where he was able to afford to open up his own bakery several blocks away, next to the shrine. Much of his profits went back into the shrine and he was eventually able to hire someone else to run his bakery while he devoted most of his time to Rivia.

The most popular item at the bakery was barrigea de defonn (“demon bellies”). The rounded, greasy buns are filled with a garlic-seasoned fatty pork paste and are still widespread in southern Neftsalyi’dam amongst the poorer urban classes. They sell for an extremely affordable two or three coppers in most areas. A slightly fancier version, with less fat and spiced with cilantro instead of garlic, has found its way up to Leal Nezerra. Any bakery whose owner does not follow Rivia (or at least pay regular respects, monetary and otherwise, to her) finds their business take a turn for the worse if they attempt to sell this item or either of the other two signature baked goods of Rivians. None have been able to say with certainty whether this is from unfavorable divine intervention or actual subtle acts of revenge carried out by her faithful.

The other two items considered signature at bakeries owned or operated by Rivians are coriander twists and eolhez d’amahe. Neither originated at the first bakery in Hellatia, but rather in other, smaller shops, and grew popular enough to find their way to most other Rivian bakeries. Coriander twists are a cheap, savory item of a regular bread dough dotted with coriander seeds. More expensive and catering to middle class tastes are the eolhez d’amahe- literally “eyes of tomorrow.” These small custard tarts are heavy and filling, and named in honor of Rivia’s powers of divination. While a delivery of coriander twists to a friend is a blandly pleasant gift and receiving barrigea de defonn is a sure sign of spite from an acquantince, eolhez d’amahe are sent as an ominious warning. They don’t necessarily signal that the sender has ill will, but rather they know someone else does, and the time when said person will act upon that feeling approaches.

A few Rivian bakeries have had to close down after a disasterous loss of business or investigation by authorities after several people were poisoned or cursed by eating baked goods from the locations. The best current information suggests that one case was a matter of poor hygiene and food safety practices, three had overzealous staff or management who were seeking revenge upon certain individuals, and the last appears to have been framed and committed no wrongdoing.

Of the dozens of bakeries nationwide, a handful sell enchanted baked goods with a variety of effects. All magical baked goods last for up to four weeks without spoiling, provided they are kept in the special bags provided upon purchase.

    The Magical Baked Goods
    Spoiler
    Show

CREATE MAGICAL BAKED GOOD [ITEM CREATION]
Prerequisite: Caster level 3rd; patron deity: Rivia.
Benefit: You can create any magical baked good whose prerequisites you meet. Creating a magical baked good takes one day for each 1,000 gp in its price. To create a magical baked good, you must spend 1/25 of the baked good’s price in XP and use up raw materials costing half of this price.
Some magical baked goods incur extra costs in material components or XP, as noted in their descriptions. These costs are in addition to those derived from the baked good’s base price. You must pay such a cost to create a magical baked good.

All magical baked goods are activated by their consumption.

    Specific Baked Goods:Updated!
    Spoiler
    Show

Bielazelli Cake: These cakes are flavored with bielazelli, an expensive blackberry cordial, and covered with a thick, almond-flavored frosting. One cake has ten servings. Each slice, once eaten, induces a feeling of delighted contentment in the person who ate it. The consumer gains a +2 bonus to Charisma for their invigorated personality, but takes a -2 penalty to Sense Motive and Intimidate checks. Additionally, the consumer feels more generously towards his companions. For each individual in the room present when he consumed the cake, his attitude towards them improves one step towards helpful (but no further than helpful). It does not change the consumer’s attitude towards an individual he is hostile towards. These effects all last for two hours, though it is possible an individual’s improved attitude towards someone remains if he has substantially meaningful, positive interaction with that person during those two hours. A Will save (DC 18) negates all effects. The cake has no magic aura detectable through detect magic or similar effects, but identify reveals its true nature.
None (faint enchantment); CL 5th; Create Magical Baked Good, eagle’s splendor, charm person; Price 8,000 gp (800 gp for a single slice); Weight 1 pound.

Blackberry Truffle Bite: A blackberry truffle bite is a tiny, bite-sized pastry flavored with flakes of black truffle and filled with a rich blackberry jam. When eaten, it heals 1d8+1 hp. If consumed by an undead creature, it instead causes 1d4 damage and nauseates them for the next minute.
Faint necromancy; CL 1st; Create Magical Baked Good, cure light wounds; Price 50 gp; Weight negligible.

Blueberry-Coriander Twist: Each of these small, yeast bread twists is stained blue from crushed blueberries and sprinkled with coriander. Eating one imbues one with divine power from Rivia herself. Individuals who don’t worship Rivia are only affected by rage for five rounds. Those who have Rivia as their patron are affected by rage for ten rounds, and are also surrounded by an aura of blue fire for the next minute. This aura of blue fire extends to all melee attacks done by the consumer, adding 1d6+2 fire damage and 1d6+2 chaotic damage to such attacks. Anyone attacking him with their body or a handheld weapon also takes 1d6+7 fire damage. This fiery aura is of an unusual variety, and does not grant any special immunity to fire or cold attacks.
Moderate evocation; CL 7th; Create Magical Baked Good, rage, fire shield, burning hands; Price 2,700 gp; Weight negligible.

Boelae ar Gosnolle: With the original recipe originating in Quixioshe, this is a twist on a popular southern pastry. The rounded, sweet yeast dough is filled with a thick lemon cream and sprinkled with light brown sugar. Eating one erases the past hour from the consumer’s memory. He simply has no idea what occurred; it’s truly a blank to him. As such, if he responds that he doesn’t know what occurred during that time, he is speaking entirely truthfully, as all lie-detecting magic will demonstrate. An unwilling creature gets a Will save (DC 17) to avoid this effect.
Moderate enchantment; CL 10th; Create Magical Baked Good, modify memory; Price 1,800 gp; Weight negligible.

Demon-Dusted Eolhez D’Amahe: These small, rich custard tarts are sprinkled with cinnamon from an abyssal plane. They have no magic aura detectable through detect magic or similar effects, but identify reveals the pastry’s true nature. Upon consuming the pastry, one must make a Fortitude save (DC 16) or be instantly afflicted with cackle fever, similar in effect to the spell contagion.
None (faint necromancy); CL 5th; Create Magical Baked Good, contagion; Price 750 gp; Weight 1/10 lb.

Drunkard’s Rum Cake: If the consumer of this rich cake fails a Will save (DC 12), he loses all interest in drinking intoxicating beverages for the next hour, tending to decline offers of alcoholic drinks and not finishing any which he currently possesses. At the end of the hour, he doesn’t immediately desire alcohol again, but the urge may naturally return if he’s presented with the sort of situation which normally inclines him to drink.
Faint enchantment; CL 1st; Create Magical Baked Good, enough for tonight; Price 20 gp; Weight 1/10 lb.

Dulce de Leche Muffins: Usually sold in half-dozens, these rich muffins contain bits of fresh apple and are topped with creamy dulce de leche. Eating one gives the consumer a +2 enhancement bonus to Charisma for the next hour.
Faint transmutation; CL 3rd; Create Magical Baked Good, eagle’s splendor; Price 1,800 for a box (300 gp each); Weight ½ lb for a box.

Fading Lemon Pastry: These small, triangular pastries are flaky and flavored with lemon. For the next twenty-four hours, the consumer is under the effects of a nondetection spell, with an effective caster level of 9th.
Moderate abjuration; CL 5th; Create Magical Baked Good, nondetection; Price 2,250 gp; Weight negligible.

Fig-Almond Eolhez D’Amahe: A diced fig-almond topping dresses these small custard tarts. Eating one gives the individual a +2 resistance bonus against poisons for the next hour.
Faint abjuration; CL 1st; Create Magical Baked Good, resistance; Price 30 gp; Weight negligible.

Hazelnut Cheesecake Square: This delicious square of cheesecake flecked with bits of hazelnut grants the consumer arcane sight for the next five minutes. Faint abjuration; CL 5th; Create Magical Baked Good, arcane sight; Price 750 gp; Weight 1/10 lb.

Lemon-Glazed Bun: Eating a lemon-glazed bun conceals one’s alignment from all forms of divination for the next 24 hours. These buns are usually only available in the original Hellatian bakery.
Faint abjuration; CL 3rd; Create Magical Baked Good, undetectable alignment; Price 150 gp; Weight 1/10 lb.

Lime Dot Cookie: A small, round, and plump item, the lime dot cookie is otherwise nondescript. It provides a +2 competence bonus to Disguise, Hide, and Move Silently for the next hour.
Faint transmutation; CL 3rd; Create Magical Baked Good, cat’s grace; Price 300 gp; Weight negligible.

Mocha Delight: In this layered concoction of a creamy fluff and soft cake are two flavors alien to all but the most sophisticated pallets: chocolate and coffee. Indeed, the coffee is from halfway across the world and the cocoa used is from the home plane of Rivia herself. A mocha delight takes one minute to eat. The consumer instantly and permanently gains an inherent bonus for the casting of divination spells. His effective caster level is raised by one for all purposes of spell duration and other effects which are directly determined by his caster level, but only for divination spells and effects. His spells per day and known spells aren’t affected in any way. An individual can only be affected by one of these pastries; consuming more than one, no matter how much time has elapsed, has no additional effect.
Strong transmutation; CL 13th; Create Magical Baked Good, limited wish, owl’s wisdom; Price 11,000 gp; Weight 1/10 lb.

Muffin Bites, Fig: These bite-sized muffins dotted with bits of fig and almonds. Each one grants the consumer an energy resistance 5 against acid damage for the next ten minutes. Faint abjuration; CL 3rd; Create Magical Baked Good, resist energy; Price 450 gp per bag (75 gp per muffin); Weight 1/10 lb for a bag, each negligible.

Muffin Bites, Pomegranate: These bite-sized muffins dotted with bits of pomegranate and spiced with nutmeg, cloves, and cassia. Each one grants the consumer an energy resistance 5 against fire damage for the next ten minutes. Faint abjuration; CL 3rd; Create Magical Baked Good, resist energy; Price 450 gp per bag (75 gp per muffin); Weight 1/10 lb for a bag, each negligible.

Muffin Bites, Walnut: These bite-sized muffins contain lemon zest, orange zest, and walnuts. Each one grants the consumer an energy resistance 5 against electricity damage for the next ten minutes. Faint abjuration; CL 3rd; Create Magical Baked Good, resist energy; Price 450 gp per bag (75 gp per muffin); Weight 1/10 lb for a bag, each negligible.

Pound Cake with Caramel Glaze: Consuming one slice of this cake gives one a +4 enhancement bonus to Wisdom for the next six minutes. The target gains all the usual benefits of increased wisdom, but she does not recevice any bonus spells from the enhancement. Faint transmutation; CL 3rd; Create Magical Baked Good, owl's wisdom; Price 300 gp per slice; Weight 1/10 lb.

Shaved Truffle Flan: This exquisitely delicious flan is small enough for a single serving, topping with a soft caramel sauce and shaved black truffle. Made of only the finest ingredients, it registers as having no magical properties to detect spells. Identify and similar spells only reveal the item’s true aura if the examiner succeeds a Will save (DC 19). If he fails the save, he believes the item to be nonmagical and no amount of testing reveals its true magic. If someone consumes this flan, they must make a Will save (DC 19) or be affected by the spell visiting babau. A shaved truffle flan is only available with the right connections, upon special request, from the original Hellatian bakery.
None (moderate conjuration); CL 11th; Create Magical Baked Good, visiting babau, magic aura; Price 3,500 gp; Weight 1/10 lb.

Thousand Tongues: These flaky pastries are rich and buttery, usually found in triangular shapes which are just enough for two mouthfuls. Consuming one allows the user to comprehend languages for the next ten minutes.
Faint divination; CL 1st; Create Magical Baked Good, comprehend languages; Price 50 gp; Weight negligible.

Venison Turnover: Unlike most magical pastries, these buttery turnovers filled with meaty, tender filling take 2d4 rounds to consume. Once fully eaten, it grants a +6 bonus to Strength for the next hour.
Faint abjuration; CL 5th; Create Magical Baked Good, bull’s strength; Price 1,200 gp; Weight 1/10 lb.

Viole Eolhez D’Amahe: Small but filling custard tarts, this particular variety is drizzled with caramel and pomegranate sauces. After consuming a viole eolhez d’amahe, the consumer’s next single attack roll (if it is made before the end of the next round) gains a +20 insight bonus. Additionally, she’s not affected by the miss chance that applies to attackers trying to strike a concealed target.
Faint necromancy; CL 1st; Create Magical Baked Good, true strike; Price 50 gp; Weight 1/10 lb.

Walnut Liqueur Square: Each of these tiny squares of cake contains a special walnut- and hazelnut-flavored liqueur and is coated with sugary, thin icing. The consumer gains a shriek of vengeance for the next five rounds.
Faint evocation; CL 5th; Create Magical Baked Good, shriek of vengeance; Price 750 gp; Weight negligible.

I realize that Create Magical Baked Good may seem redundant with Craft Wondrous Item, but I really wanted to make a specific, focused branch of magic items that tend to function more like potions (in that all are consume-and-affect). Of course, the application of the feat would be limited, and more magical pastries would be needed for it to be worth the time of player characters.

    Baking Fiend

Only a few dozen baking fiends exist, the vast majority of which reside in Neftsalyi’dem, overseeing bakeries or working directly for the Church of Rivia in some fashion.

    REQUIREMENTS
    Alignment: NE, CE, or CN.
    Feats: Create Magical Baked Good.
Spells: Ability to cast 3rd-level arcane or divine spells.
    Patron Deity: Rivia.

    Class Skills
The baking fiend’s class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Bluff (Cha), Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Intimidate (Cha), Knowledge (arcane) (Int), Knowledge (nature) (Int), Knowledge (religion) (Int), Knowledge (the planes) (Int), Listen (Wis), Profession (Wis), Search (Int), Sense Motive (Wis), Spellcraft (Int), Spot (Wis), and Survival (Wis).
Skills Points at Each Level: 6 + Int modifier

    Hit Dice: d6.

Weapon Proficiencies: Baking fiends gain no proficiency with any weapon or armor.
Spells per Day/Spells Known: When a new baking fiend level is gained, the character gains new spells per day (and spells known, if applicable) as if he had also gained a level in whatever spellcasting class in which she could cast 3rd-level spells before he added the prestige class level. She does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained. If a character had more than one spellcasting class in which she could cast 3rd-level spells before she became a baking fiend, she must decide to which class she adds each level of baking fiend for the purpose of determining spells per day.
Artisan Baker: All baking fiends gain a +2 profane bonus to Profession (baker) checks.
Potent Effects: Starting at first level, when a baking fiend is creating a magical baked good, she adds her Wisdom modifier (if positive) to any stated saving DCs of the item.
Hardy Constitution (Ex): Beginning at second level, the baking fiend becomes immune to all poisons and natural diseases.
Purify Food and Drink (Sp): At second level, a baking fiend may purify food and drink at will.
Impromptu Baking (Su): Once per day starting at third level, the baking fiend can make up to one egg bun per level. She must have access to a cooking fire, oven, or similar, as well as basic baking/mixing equipment, and eggs, flour, water, salt, and either baking soda or yeast. Eating one egg bun heals 1d4+1 points of damage. Egg buns must be consumed within ten minutes of completion or else they lose all magical properties.
Ingredient Hunting (Ex): At third level, a baking fiend becomes uncannily skilled at locating ingredients, be it in a kitchen or finding them out in the wild. She gains a +5 bonus to all Search, Survival, and related checks solely for the purposes of finding certain ingredients (including edible but still-living plants, fungi, and animals).
Unshakeable Constitution (Ex): Beginning at fourth level, the baking fiend becomes immune to being sickened or nauseous as well as all supernatural and magical diseases.
Food Poisoning (Sp): At fourth level, the baking fiend may use food poisoning as a spell-like ability once per day.
Conjure Ingredients (Sp): At fifth level, a baking fiend can conjure basic ingredients at will. She cannot conjure any single ingredient worth over 1 gp or which is derived from an item costing over 1 gp (such as truffles or truffle shavings), nor any ingredients used for non-baking purposes (such as steaks for grilling or eggs for the purpose of being lobbed in combat). The ingredients vanish after 1 minute if they aren’t being directly used in baking.
Master Baker: At fifth level, baking fiend adds her Intelligence and her Charisma modifiers to her Profession (baker) checks. She also gains a +4 competence bonus to any Appraise or Craft checks involving baked goods. Finally, she may detect magic on any baked good at will and is not fooled by any magic auras on baked goods and baked goods only.

I love Baking Fiend. We need more cooking PRCs, especially evil ones! =3

The magic baking goods are flavorful, with an interesting twist on Craft Wondrous Item, though yeah, this is a very niche version of that feat. Maybe that works out but for now, it seems like a detail that only your NPC faithful of Rivia will be aware of.

I see no reason why the blackberry truffle bite inflicts less damage to undead than it heals to living. I highly doubt you'll be able to effectively use them as a combat weapon, since they need to be injested, and undead don't eat. Besides, just imagine a PC going around trying to 'feed' undead. That should be encouraged, at every juncture.

Why thank you! I may eventually make a good, related class; it'd make sense for the goddess of agriculture to have some sort of gourmet prestige class.

Thanks! I'm hoping to expand the list, and while it's unlikely a PC would take the class, I think it's balanced enough to not be a terrible choice if it fits their background or goals.

Well, first off, I did this for flavor. There are a rare few liches and vampires in normal Neftsalyi'dem society, and I imagine them feeling queasy and vomiting if they accidentally ingest a treat with a positive energy. It seemed more interesting than "Oh, that was pretty much a cure spell in your tummy. Take 1d8+1 damage." The item is really intended as a minor variation on a potion of cure light wounds, just with the fluff and the undead damage switched around a bit. There was never intention of using the truffle as a weapon, hence I didn't think it'd affect balance in the slightest.

I'm going to go through the spell list and see which are good foods. Levels 0-2

    Levels 0 & 1

Detect Poison, Detect magic, Read magic, Resistance, Endure elements, Shield, Mage armor, Detect undead, Detect secret doors, Feather fall, Jump, Enlarge Person, Reduce person, Identify, Virtue, Guidance, Produce flame, True Strike, Speak with animals

    Level 2

    Bull's Strength, Bears Endurance, Cat's Grace, Fox's Cunning, Eagle's Splendor, Owl's Wisdom

    Bear claw
This pastry, when eaten, gives you a +4 bonus to strength. The effects last for 4 minutes. The pastry is good for a week before it starts to go stale. A stale bear claw can still be eaten for 1d4 days before it rots completely. A stale bear claw causes the eater to be Sickened for 1d4 rounds. A rotten bear claw causes the eater to Nauseated for 1d4 hours.
Faint enchantment; CL 4th; Create Magical Baked Food; bull's strenth; Price 300 gp; weight negligible.

The item is really intended as a minor variation on a potion of cure light wounds, just with the fluff and the undead damage switched around a bit. I get all that, I just don't think you need to reduce the damage to get the added nausea.

ooh, I like this a lot! Of course, this class would be appropriate to a fat mage I used to play, Igor Buttercrisp, who was a culinary expert. I may want to revamp him just for this.

Just for grins and giggles here's a fuller version of the Bear Claw. Just a reminder: if you are going to create magical food, you should really make sure that the magical effect has a duration.

P.S. Shouldn't Baking Fiends get proficiency to throw pies?

P.P.S. Or the ability to summon a Pie Fiend (see here:

Kinda reminds me of a Gnome Sorcerer PRC centered around cooking I wanted to do, which was further inspired by this: the Bacon Lance!

Maybe I'll sit down and do it if I can get further inspiration of what to do with it.

Thanks to everyone who contributed and encouraged me! Here are a few more:

Pound Cake with Caramel Glaze: Consuming one slice of this cake gives one a +4 enhancement bonus to Wisdom for the next six minutes.

Muffin Bites, Walnut: These bite-sized muffins contain lemon zest, orange zest, and walnuts. Each one grants the consumer an energy resistance 5 against electricity damage for the next ten minutes. Oh, yes! I meant to change that between my notes and the post on the forums, but clearly I forgot. I'll go fix that; thanks for the reminder!

(I've made a few changes to the basic rules so far in my campaign setting. The two relevent ones here are I renamed "acid" as "chemical", and healing is now necromancy (since it deals with life energy) rather than conjuration.)

Shouldn't the caster level be a minimum of 3rd level for all the magic items since the CREATE MAGICAL BAKED GOOD [ITEM CREATION] feat has a prerequistie that the caster be 3rd level? [Your most recent ones have CL 3 or more but your original items have some as CL 1]

    Otherwise, these are awesome.

Actually, I see your point, but that isn't how it works. There are a few wondrous items with caster level 1, for example, and that feat also requires you to be third level. Basically, caster level is just for the purposes of creating that particular item. Like, look at the formula for potions:

50 gp x spell level x caster level.

We notice that cure light wounds potions are only 50 gp, and spell level is first, so the caster level the creator uses is the lowest necessary to cast the spell (first level).

    Hope that makes sense.

I’m uncertain about the venison turnover pricing. Does anyone know of any similar items I could better compare it to?

Mmm, Venison Turnovers sound really good right now....*drool*

Ah, anyways, the Bull's Strength effect would come out to normally 2 x 5 x 50 or 500 gp as a single use use-activated item. Increasing the strength bonus is equivalent to having the Ability Enhancer feat and increasing the duration from 5 minutes to an hour adhocs to an Extend Spell-like. The extended activation detracts from it to a pre-combat item, so balance-wise it seems like it's priced right. I can't think of an item to compare it to, so this is just my gut feeling on the matter.

I need help with pricing again. Also, these are a bit more complex than some of the previous items; do they make sense or seem useful?

I don't know about the other ones but I can see the Mocha Delights being abused, as I'm not sure how inherent bonii work with non-abilities. If it caps at +5, that's still +5 CL for divination spells, which can get quite a bit abusive with other CL enhancers, whether from domain powers (I'm sure there's one or 2 that give a CL bonus for divination) and other CL enhancers, like the Ioun stone and whatnot.

Maybe I'm over thinking this, as it's on divination spells only, not in general. Divination isn't exactly that CL dependent, though Moment of Prescience gets certainly gets more bad-ass with such going. So, either way, I'd define a bit what the limits are on the item, whether you get to eat 1 and only 1 for +1 CL or raise the price significantly, as the Tomes are the only other items that give inherent bonii and they start at just shy of 30k.

Them's my 2 coppers. Take as you will.

Very good points! I will specify that a person can only ever be affected by one Mocha Delight, and it doesn't stack with anything else which specifically increases effective caster level. I think that it'll pretty much only affect spell duration, given the nature of most divination spells, so I'm hoping that means it isn't too powerful. Clarifying the only one though is vital and I appreciate you pointing that out!
