Theoretical balance question
I'm writing another homebrew race, currently, specifically a spire-touched planetouched race. Now, since the spire is strongly anti-magical, I'd like to give them a kind of anti-magic spell. Obviously, dispel magic is a third level spell.
However, would a second-level spell that only did "targeted dispel", on touch, be more or less balanced, if it's maximum caster level was even more limited than the one of normal dispel magic?Resident Vancian Apologist

Re: Theoretical balance question
Take a look at Karsites from the Tome of Magic.
They have SR, lack the ability to cast any spells, and have a dispelling touch.

Re: Theoretical balance question
There was a second level spell that is just that.
Arcane Turmoil
I don't remember which book it is from.

Re: Theoretical balance question
Complete Mage, though I'm not sure if it limits the caster level any more harshly. Still, a good basis for the ability.

Re: Theoretical balance question
Right. I only checked the SpC.
Actually, Arcane Turmoil is better than my idea... it has a close range instead of touch, and also can remove prepared spells from casters...Last edited by Eldan; 2009-09-12 at 08:38 AM.

Re: Theoretical balance question
In many situations Arcane Turmoil is better than Dispel Magic.

Re: Theoretical balance question
Then it's probably too good. Well, I guessed as much. In that case, I'll just use a dispelling touch as was my original intention.
