[4e] Noob question regarding xp
As a new DM, I've been confused as to the amount of XP it takes to level up. The DMG continuously refers to taking 8 to 10 encounters to level up, put the PHB table is a bit confusing.
The table refers to "Total XP", with the XP for level 5 being 5,500 and level 6 being 7,500. Does this mean that it takes 2,000 XP to go from level 5 to level 6? That doesnt make any sense, seeing as the encounters reward about 1,000 XP each. Where am I going wrong?

Re: [4e] Noob question regarding xp
Well, remember, as the DM, you determine the xp per encounter.
Also, the experience for an encounter is divided among the party, not given in full to each member. so a 1000 xp encounter defeated by 4 characters would give each character 250 xp, not 1000 xp. That make sense?

Re: [4e] Noob question regarding xp
Thanks a bunch, I get it now.
Budgeting the XP gained is a really easy way to plan out the encounters.

Re: [4e] Noob question regarding xp
Also, Some DMs dislike the XP method. Once in a blue moon, you'll find a DM that levels the characters up when he sees fit (It doesn't sound as rough as it sounds; they usually level faster). Consider doing this, when you're DMing, if you don't want/your players don't want to keep track of pesky XP counts. But in the end, it's what you prefer. Also, for RAW(Rules as Written) questions, post in this thread, with the format shown in the original post.

Re: [4e] Noob question regarding xp
I usually just level up my players when they complete a story(2-4 adventures), or when a power up is neccesary.
You can also just give xp out at a rate you decide. It's up to you. I've even known some GMs who level the characters up every session."Sometimes, we’re heroes. Sometimes, we shoot other people right in the face for money."
