I do love seeing the myriad ways the Giant has of roadblocking these guys. Nice job recalling to the fact that the party broke up under the worst possible conditions.

But man, that's a little short-sighted, possibly blowing up one of the gate guardians.

Wow. So I was wondering if Girard had made any preparations for the 10% chance he was wrong.

    The answer is no.

I like Belkar's sand-flumph. Also, the fact that Elan's newfound cognitive abilities are still not enough to tell when someone is threatening to kill him.

Girard probably figured a rogue wouldn't keep a tactical blunder like a diary. I think we can eliminate evocation from Girard's list of barred schools.

Aand we now have proof that Girard is either evil or insane. Seriously, using a heuristic with a ten percent failure rate to decide when to set off your trap nuke? Bad form. Bad, bad form.

There goes any possible moral ground of Girard over Soon.

    The guy has serious issues.

On the bright side, maybe we will now meet Girard and/or Serini - or their living associates, anyway. This may turn out to be a lucky strike despite Girard's shortsightness.

I always enjoy the scenes with really big booms. I squee'd a little. So basically the jist of this strip = oh crap, we're all screwed; Boom!; joke. I love this comic! :D
I don't know. Think about how you'd feel if the paladin who had forced your whole party to do everything the good and noble way just let the barbarian die. I'd be pretty much ticked forever. Maybe he realized his explosion was short sighted but it was too late to change it by then.

    So Girard? = Magnificent Bastard.

BTW, I so want that scene of Durkon looking over his shoulder at the mushroom cloud as a Wallpaper.

Looks like the party is in serious trouble. Xykon knows where to go, they're lost and injured. Couldn't be much more screwed unless a demon appeared (again) and tried to kill them. On the other hand, the blast interests me: it can't have been powerful enough to kill anyone, since that would set off another huge mess of needing-to-get-resurrected, but it's obvious that Girard prepared a spell powerful enough to kill Soon (an extremely powerful and tough paladin) and such a spell would certainly have the power to wipe out most of the Order (at the very least Haley, Elan, and V). An interesting conundrum.

Quite the opposite; if there is a 10% chance that it's not a paladin, then that means that there's a 10% chance that it's someone else who is after the Gates. And they deserve to be blown up too, at least from Girard's point of view. Better safe than sorry.
Congratulations, you can link to TV Tropes. This does not mean you have special insight into the storytelling process, much less the author's mind. Stories don't need to fit into neat boxes, you know.

Alright. The issue I meant to highlight was that he hadn't anticipated that someone could possibly have legitimate reasons for seeking out the gate, which seems a little shortsighted.

(Also, that heuristic is terrible because half the words it used are not totally uncommon)

actually, absolutly not evil, definatly no good either tough, so very likely neutral... chaotic neutral....

altough if roy survived that blast is could never EVER have been strong enough to kill soon if it was him standing there instead... its just a warning

True. But he is, as the strip title mentions, completely paranoid. He may even be actually insane at this point, given that he's been living in a dungeon by himself for 50+ years. Good decision-making may not be a skill we have reason to assume that he possesses.

There may be more to the heuristic then JUST those words...their order and the words around them could also play into the decision, but it's not like Rich is going to devote panels to explaining that.
