Does a bear warrior gain the bonuses of say a brown bear, +16 str, +2 dex, and +8 con, while raging in human form, because it says that you dont gain them when you transform, so does it replace my rage bonuses, or must i transform and rage?

It enhances your normal rage from what I understand. You won't be able to use your weapon after you transform so I suggest either getting a weapon that you can hold in your teeth (forgot the name of the enhancement, but its in Lords of Madness in the Beholder section) or Improved Unarmed Strike and some fist of the forest levels.

I'm assuming, considering the class name, you get your bonuses from becoming a bear.

Edit: Just looked; give it another read. If you become a bear, you keep the +2 Will and -2 AC from raging while in bear form, but your bonuses to Strength and Constitution are -replaced- by the bear form's stats.

No, you have to transform in order to get the bear bonuses. You can Rage without tranforming, but you can't transform without raging. It does expicitly state that the bonuses you get from transforming replace those you normally get from rage, but nothing would prevent you from spending another rage/day to become an enraged bear.

The problem with Bear Warrior is that its limited to WAY too few uses per day. Its a rather shady RAW interpretation of Extra Rage to allow extra bear shapes, but it wouldn't be unbalanced to alow it.

A good idea is to start with a Dwarf base, tack on 2 levels of Deepwarden, and then go into Bear Warrior. This gets you your MASSIVE Con score to AC, instead of your piddly Dex, and makes you actually pretty resiliant in bear form. Just an idea.

Doesn't it say in the description you can transform as many times as you can rage?

Are you sure? Seems a bit strange, as it mentions you retain the +2 Will and -2 AC for raging, so in bear form, I assume you're already counted as 'raging'.

Edit: And nope, you can transform once, and then later on, twice a day into bear form.

Whenever a bear warrior enters a rage or frenzy, he can
choose to assume bear form (similar to the polymorph
spell). He must remain in bear form until the end of his
rage or frenzy. When his rage or frenzy ends, the bear
warrior immediately returns to his own form.
The number of times a bear warrior can assume bear
form is the number of times per day he enters a rage or
frenzy. Ignore the conflicting limitations specified in the
third, fourth, and fifth paragraphs of the bear form
    description.
    From the Complete Warrior errata.

Ah, cheers for the correction. =3

Going by that though, it seems you're still raging even in bear form, so I doubt it's intended you go from raging warrior, to bear, to raging bear.

You could take Frenzied Berserker and essentially have the same effect.

Incidently, my favorite part about the Bear Warrior errata is it means if you can finagle your way to an intelligent item that can cast Rage, you can be a bear all day long. Barring that, just having a friendly caster know it can extend the number of encounters you can bear with.

ok so it says ignore the contradicting paragraphs so does that mean i have to be a bear to get the stat upgrades, or i can rage while in human form and get them, if we are going by the erratated version

No, the conflicting lines I'm assuming means those saying you can only change once per day while raging.

Would seem pretty stupid if you had the choice of full Barbarian, and +8 Strength/Constitution (if I recall), or a Prestige Class that gives you a straight bonus of double to two stats, and Dexterity.

He's somehow creating the assumption that the +8 Strength, +8 Con, +2 Dex replaces the regular rage/frenzy while in human form. I'm rather sure that the stat increases are only applied while in bear form

Which is great because then you become more powerful by turning into a smaller bear.

That is obviously because as the chassis gets smaller the bearness gets more concentrated.
