Is this character good enough? (3.5) Mystic Theurge
I really wanted to play a mystic theurge this time around. Not because they are good, but because they are fun, and have flavor.
Anyway it is an 8th level campaign, and here is what I have:
Lesser Aasimar Necropolitan(Assume he turned to the dark side)
Savage Bard 1-Transmuter3-Master Specialist 1-Ur Priest 2-Mystic Theurge 1
A bit about the character: I started him at venerable age, for the boost to mental stats.
He is a Buffer for our almost all melee group.
I spent starting cash on cure wands so I did not have to waste spell slots of cure spells. Also bought a wand of invisibility for myself so I can buff without being targeted.
Took Practiced Spellcaster twice for both Wizard and Ur-Priest.
Took the sacred healing feat, so I can use my turnings to give my party fast healing 3. More useful then weak rebuking really.
Focused Specialist for extra transmuting. Restricted Necro, enchantment, and evocation.
So, Is this good enough, or should I find something more to add to him? Anything that could optomize him even further? Remember, I am trying to be the best buffer I can, so my party always wins.Last edited by ChrisDemilich; 2009-12-27 at 10:46 PM.

Re: Is this character good enough? (3.5) Mystic Theurge
He has no spells worth buffing with...
Ur Priest has crap for number of spells per day. It's not as 'uber' as everyone says it is. As a result, your Transmuter progression is retarded by both Ur Priest *AND* the level in Savage Bard for the Will Save requirement.
If you are going to do this, go Bard/UrPriest/Sublime Chord/MT (SublimeChord/UrPriest) so at least you get 9th level spells on both sides...
Far better idea is to go Sorc/WarWeaver/Magical Trickster and take Arcane Disciple for the two or three spells you need from the Cleric list.
Failing that, you can go Cleric, grabbing domains appropriate for the arcane buffs you want, then DMM Chain Spell it to everyone.SpoilerQuite possibly, the best rebuttal I have ever witnessed.

Divine and Arcane casting at full progression? Wiz 3/Druid 3/MT 2/AH 10/MT 2. That's full progression. Alternatively, just go Archivist. Every arcane spell you want is available somewhere. Buffing? Cleric 20. Go DMM:Chain and snag a way of making touch spells Ranged Touch. Or War Weaver. Really, MT is never a good idea, it's a way of salvaging a bad one.

I play primarily 3.5 D&D. Most of my advice will be based off of this. If my advice doesn't apply, specify a version in your post.

Actually, Mystic Theurge is just weaker than a full spellcaster. That probably makes it Tier 2 or 3 without cheese. That's respectable, not 'salvage'.

Re: Is this character good enough? (3.5) Mystic Theurge
As your build currently stands, you barely even get 3rd level spells. You'd be better off just going Transmuter 3/ Master Specialist 5 and using spells like Haste and Mass Bull's Strength, rather than using Mystic Theurge. If the group is almost all melee already, what they'd really need is someone who can debuff the opponents and keep them from winning, rather than just powering up your own team.
Take Shneeky's advice and going Bard 8/ Ur-Priest 2/ Sublime Chord 2/ Mystic Theurge 8, which would probably turn out to be the best buffer in the long run anyway. Start out as a Savage Bard 7/ Ur-Priest 1, get Dragonfire Inspiration, Melodic Casting, and Song of the Heart, along with a Badge of Valor and be sure you know Inspirational Boost. That should add +4d6 fire damage to your allies' attacks, and you can even cast spells without interrupting your Inspire Courage. Be sure to get Haste and always cast Glitterdust early and often. You shouldn't need to use more than a few spells in any encounter, so Ur-Priest would probably be more for versatility than additional buffs.
