    Default scrying eye

    the cat can detect scrying?
    WTF

this obviously means that girard was shojo ( http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=135430 )
and when shojo got "killed" he changed into his back up of the cat.

this would explain the hippy dream thing belkar went on. all illusions made by girard

Well, I just figured we'd wander around, kill some sentient creatures because they had green skin and fangs and we don't, and then take their stuff.

I was going to point this out, but I'm taking it in a bit of a different direction:

Mr. Scruffy is actually a familiar of an Azurite Wizard who is keeping tabs on Belkar and the Order's quest using some sort of enhanced familiar link. The wizard used the Shojo illusion as a way to keep Belkar pointed at Team Evil.

more importantly, the eye is GREEN.. all magic users in oots have their own colour of magic, pink for v, black for xykon etc, in the crayons of time HERE we can see girards is a reddish purple, so whoever is scrying, its NOT girard

i which is why girard, as mr.scruffy, would be surprised by the scrying. meaning someone in his original group is still around

It could be a very long distance home-brewed scrying that works on locations, but the 'eye' is visible, or maybe something like a magic mouth that would allow the caster to see and communicate with whatever is there

    i dunno, this:
    http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0292.html
is what scrying looked like when the pallies did it. and it looks like it has the same faded invisalook

plus haley's spot would be good enough to see from that distance

The western continent is Tiamet's domain. Tiamet is also the Oracle's boss. It could be Tiamet scrying on the order.

.. which also means, the Gods are finally taking notice after 3 out of 5 gates have fallen.

The magic mouth that welcomes you to Sunken Valley is also green. If we buy the colour-coded magic idea, and also the Oracle-works-for-Tiamat theory, then that might be a hint.

On the other hand, Elan's music is green. Maybe it's a bard-specific colour.

Edit: But why would Tiamat need to do anything as mundane as "scrying" on mortals? Surely she'd have something better, like the celestials.

No, the caster is notifyed how the spell failed (spell failed because of magical/environmental precautions)

Well, being all-powerful is one thing, but knowing what to do with all that power is quite another. Maybe Tiamet is still undecided on what to do about the gate situation and is still gathering information about it?

Gates aside, Tiamat has some vested interest due to the IFCC and all the black dragons killed in the evil V arc. In addition to protecting her realm in the OOtSverse, she could be looking to utilize the conflict between OOtS and Xykon to do something sinister.

No, but they can be ordered to follow a Halfling around and look like his animal companion.

How would that inform him of the scrying? And even if he knew, whoever's on the other end of the scrying sensor would still see a halfling holding a lead sheet.

Well, Lirian's magic is green. But it can't be her. She be gone.

I think the Oracle is the only other green magic so far. I'm not sure why some think Tiamat's is green, we haven't actually seen it. I think this is the closest, and there are several colors, I suppose scrying could come out green.

I've read this reference around a couple of threads last week but I don't remember when the roaches made that comment. Any link?

Edit: Don't mind. I just found it in this thread.

Nine sides? I can't remember the demon roaches saying that, or indeed ever saying anything that wasn't comedy-oriented. Would you be so kind as to link me to the appropriate strip?

On another note, while it is possible that different people's spells might be colour-coded, keep in mind that there are only a certain number of colours in the world, so its not a completely foolproof method of identification. Also, we should consider who would know where the Order are/where Girard's Gate was supposedly meant to be and why they would want to scry on them/it if we want to actually identify anyone.

Finally, I'm sticking by my "Mr. Scruffy is Soon Kim" Theory, and so there.

that cat is all kinds of tweaked out, cause cats also should have an AC of 14, and it managed to dodge here

My suspicion is that Mr. Scruffy is NOT Belkar's animal companion.

OR someone's familiar pretending to be Belkar's animal companion.

    I'm thinking bigger.

    And older.

    By quite a bit.

Of course, I'm also totally prepared to be wrong.

Mr. Scruffy is obviously Miko disguised as Shojo disguised as Girard disguised as a familiar disguised as an animal companion.

The truth is, Miko and Shojo were both illusions cast by Mr. Scruffy, who is in reality Girard, because in an ironic twist in the story Girard actually decided to keep tabs on Soon's gate, rather than the other way around! You see, blowing up the OotS in the desert was actually a TRIPLE bluff. Notice how Belkar and Mr. Scruffy were nowhere near the explosion when it happened. That was no accident.

But don't worry if you don't understand the complexities of my theory; I will be shown to be correct as the story unfolds. The only thing I don't yet have figured out is whose familiar Mr. Scruffy/Girard is disguised to be. I think THAT'S the real question we should all be asking.

I figure the green magic of the scrying eye might belong to the Elves who are joining with the Resistance in Azure City?

Green magic certainly seems appropriate for Elves. And apparently, they have some spellcasting abilities, with at least one wizard among them.
