Cart wheeling off the small hill, laughing all the while, this energetic and pretty humanoid miscalculates and lands with an audible oomph mere feet from your legs. Her face is devoid of any blemishes or worry lines. Unruly metallic red hair spills forth from atop her head. And large blue eyes with flecks of deeper sapphire twinkle with amusement. Thin and translucent gossamer wings trail from her shoulders. She springs lightly to her feet, and reaches down to dust the dirt from her beeches. Waving a hello at you, she runs off to join in some other fun.

The ericaceae or cute berries are the caretakers of the myriad fields dotting the Sprawling Contentment. Within these fields, plantations of consumables flourish; an abundance of goods that the Fruits give away to those who they deem deserve it. The eriaceae go about their duties in a carefree manner, celebrating in the existence of life. A cute berry exists to laugh.

When the occasion calls for it, an ericaceae can serve quite comfortably and admirably as a messenger or scout.

A cute berry stands about 4 feet tall. A cute berry frowns on people asking how much she weighs. Deigning to poke her tongue out and stick her thumbs in her ears and wiggle her fingers instead.

    Combat

Eriaceae avoid combat, knowing that their small frames are no match for the majority of aggressors. They fly up to where melee combatants cannot harm them and where even ranged combatants have a hard time hitting them with arrows. They casually pelt the rude humanoid with magic missiles from on high.

Cute Berry (Su): An eriaceae is so cute and adorable that it may influence others to do what it desires. A cute berry receives a +4 racial bonus on Diplomacy checks (included in the statistics above). Those interacting with the cute berry always have an initial attitude of friendly rather than indifferent.

Spell-Like Abilities: At will – dancing lights, faerie fire. 3/day – goodberry, magic missile. 1/day – sleep. Caster level 2nd. The save DCs are Charisma-based.

Sugary Goodness (Ex): A fruit may sacrifice itself so that others may live, be freed from any curses and the like. The ericaceae may allow itself to be eaten, transmuting into a hard, delicious candy, to restore one humanoid of up to 6 HD.

Tasty (Ex): A fruit is naturally tasty and is part of any balanced diet. Too much fruit may give you gas however. You have been warned. Everything in moderation.

This handsome humanoid has a feral gleam in his eye. With disheveled brown hair and a lopsided grin, he looks decidedly roguish. He wears a laurel crown with open doublet and reddish brown beeches, all stained with dirt and wine. He peers at you from a drunken haze, holding a tankard in one hand and a feathered hat in the other. Despite the creature looking exceedingly inebriated, his green and purple eyes are clear and sharp. They follow your every move.

The vitaceae perform a dual role. On the one hand, their natural tendency for excess goes hand in hand with their propensity to revel. Their love of alcohol and ability to remain sober is legendary. On the other, they are the forward scouts and foremost assassins of the Fruits. Their debauched natures providing a fitting cover identity.

A vitaceae is about 6 feet tall and weighs about 100 pounds.

    Combat

Vitaceae are not instigators of violence, but they don't back down from it either. They seek to entice newcomers with offers of wine and song. However, they do not hesitate to make use of charm person or emotion to magically compel revelry from anyone who does not wish to join their debauchery.

Grape Vine (Ex): A vitaceae is immune to poison and suffers no effects from intoxication. Each vitaeceae carries a length of rope some 30 feet long that entangles opponents of sizes up to Large as an animate rope (caster level 5th). A vitaceae can hurl its rope 10 feet with no range penalty. A vitaceae may also use this rope to constrict opponents, dealing 1d6 points of damage.

Debauch (Su): Vitaceae try to draw strangers into their perpetual revel. Anyone who joins a band of vitaceae in their debauchery, whether voluntarily or through the beguilement must make a Will save DC 14 or lose all track of time and start revelling alongside the vitaceae. A victim ensnared by the vitaceae's debauchery will not willingly. At the next sunrise, the victim must make a second Will save. If successful, the debauched character recovers his or her sense and may leave if he so chooses, although the vitaceae are likely to begin the whole process anew.

Rend (Ex): If a vitaceae hits with both claws, it latches onto the opponent’s body and tears the flesh. This attack automatically deals an additional 2d3 points of damage.

Spell-Like Abilities: At will – greater teleport (self plus 50 pounds only). 3/day – charm person, goodberry, Tasha's hideous laughter. 1/day – emotion. Caster level 5th. The save DCs are Charisma-based.

    Sugary Goodness (Ex):
A fruit may sacrifice itself so that others may live, be freed from any curses and the like. The vitaceae may allow itself to be eaten, transmuting into a delicious hard candy, to restore one humanoid of up to 8 HD.

Tasty (Ex): A fruit is naturally tasty and is part of any balanced diet. Too much fruit may give you gas however. You have been warned. Everything in moderation.

    Candy Redux

Confectionery in its myriad forms has traditionally been associated with mortal children; indeed, its popularity is almost solely perpetuated by children, who consume these delicacies with ravenous delight.

Festivals too have been enacted in its honor. Cynics have labeled these as singularly focused exercises designed explicitly to generate profit, while traditionalists maintain such festivities harken back to centuries past where the agricultural deities and gods of the land were venerated.

This notwithstanding, adventurer candy or confectionery for adventurers is increasingly becoming common and popular among such parties.

It is been suggested that adventurer candy was due in part to impatient adventurers who had neither the time nor the inclination to decipher, record, and verbalise magic from scrolls or similar devices.

Wanting an alternative that was both expedient and marketable proved to be a challenge that was difficult to solve. Until, that is, a collective experienced an eureka moment; the sudden insight that confectionery imbued with arcana (actually, spells) would be exceedingly sought after, to the extent that other magic items may even be discarded and thus a monopoly would form.

This reality, of course, is yet to be realised, however, candy for adventurers has proven to be a impressively popular hit.
To avoid market saturation and too many cavities, candy is usually priced more expensively than a similarly leveled scroll or other magic item.

    Mechanics
Depositing the candy into the mouth involves a move action.
Mastication, and thus evoking the benefits of the stored magic, involves a swift action. Usually these benefits, due to the time spent on chewing, and time spent bringing the candy to the mouth is usually delayed but can be mitigated somewhat with the feats below.
Incidently, the duration of beneficial effects lasts as long as the candy is in the mouth and ends when the candy has been dissolved by saliva.

A Selection of Candies, Confectionery and Lollies

    Blue Coil
This candy, a mint, is shot through with displays of blue and white; occasionally, it can even discharge minute crackles of electricity. This is harmless to the consumer. When digested, this candy invokes the call lightning spell.

    Burning Breath
This slightly spicy candy gives off the faint aroma of brimstone. Red jelly can be found under a raspberry flavored candy shell. When eaten, this candy allows the consumer to evoke a minor breath weapon as a cone of fire dealing 2d8 points of damage (DC = 10 + class level + Con modifier). The cone is 30 feet long.

    Red Dragon
This candy is lovingly crafted into the shape of a miniature red dragon from which illusory flame shoots from its tiny nostrils.
Its outer shell is hard milk chocolate over which is a core of delicious caramel honey-comb.
Despite its name, this candy when eaten produces a resist energy (fire) effect.

    Golden Blessed
This very delicious candy exudes a soft golden glow and is beautiful to look at. The flavor of this candy can be likened to caramel but tastes even better. When eaten, this candy grants a double strength bless effect.

    Thyme Stop
This greenish-white candy is shaped in the form of a thyme leaf. It faintly gives off the lingering scent of sage and rosemary and dissolves in the mouth with a slight fizz. This is one of the most powerful candies gold coins can purchase, as when digested it invokes a time stop effect.

    White Shield
This candy is in the shape of what looks to be blocks of white chocolate. Stamped upon both sides, inlaid with flakes of edible gold is what appears to be a stylised depiction of a shield. This candy when eaten gifts the recipient with the mage armor spell. Eating an entire block, of at least 6 pieces, imparts the benefit of a double strength mage armor effect.

    Cursed Confectionery
Occasionally, candy can be cursed, and these are aptly titled adventurers' bane.

    Earwax, Thousand Flavored Candy
This cursed candy looks a delicious lemon-yellow and apparently looks just as tasty. Be warned, fellow adventurers! All is not what it seems. Not only does it taste awful, the consumer's earwax multiplies to such an extent that it imposes a -2 penalty to Listen checks.

    Stinkbomb
This unflatteringly repugnant, odious vomit green candy smells of worn-too-long socks and other disagreeable-with-stomach things. When eaten, if one is brave enough, it evokes the cloudkill spell.

    Mind Shatter
This crumbly violet-hued candy is astonishingly delicious and melts sensuously in the mouth. It is also supremely addictive. However, caution is ever advised where this confectionery is concerned. It's taste and addictive nature hides an ugly secret. When ingested, this cursed item causes the target to be feebleminded.

    Feats
    Gobble It Up [General]
    Benefit
Your jaws of steel (this feat) greatly expedites the mastication process. Consuming the candy becomes an immediate action and makes the benefits given instantaneous effects; where the spell has a longer effect time, this is not changed.

    Wolf It Down [General]
    Benefit

This feat ensures less time spent on the unwrapping and eating process and more on the sugary goodness inside the candy.
This feat changes the move action for depositing a candy into the mouth to a swift action.

Notes: having two or more in one's mouth may allow the masticator to benefit far more than what a standard WBL item may impart. Having a call lightning effect active at the same time as the fiery cone at the same time as the double strength bless may resolve a combat strongly in the favor of the one with candy.

Possibly add some kind of sickening effect to the Stink candy? Otherwise, I like the fluff.
Imagine if, when those stormtroopers stopped ol' Obi Wan, and asked about his droids, he bellowed "YES, THESE ARE THE DROIDS YOU ARE LOOKING FOR!! PREPARE TO ENGAGE IN HONORABLE COMBAT!!" and whipped out his lightsabre.

Thanks! More should be on the way
Will adding the sickened effect to Stinkbomb possibly make it too powerful? It already forces a save or die effect; even success is a semi-failure.

    Here are more candy

    More Cursed Candy

    Vacuous Blackberry
This extremely satisfying candy takes the form of strands of licorice; each length bearing the pleasing scent of blackberry. It, like Mind Shatter, melts sensuously in the mouth, generating ever greater desire for its consumption. Unfortunately and perhaps alarmingly, it too, is hideously cursed. Consumers of its goodness are targeted with a focused touch of idiocy.

    Inimical Gift
Bastards and followers of inimical supernals have been known to give these candy to strangers; perhaps forcing Creation to introduce the "never take candy from strangers" axiom. Both the giving and eating of this candy is disturbingly addictive; saves must be attempted at a Will DC = 1/2 + HD + spell level to disabuse themselves of that notion. This candy kills the recipient and draws their soul into a soul bind.

    Circular Distortion
These flakes are the mutated offspring of pastry and confectionery; while appearing for all intents and purposes as a candy, it has all the consistency and taste of a doughnut. Eating it conjures forth a gate; the results of which are randomly determined.

Confectionery, Candy, Lollies may be created with the Craft Wondrous Items feat; the appropriate XP and material component must also be supplied.

Wait, it's addictive but kills people with no save, who are then deader than dead? And the save to resist eating it is a number that doesn't even make sense; candy doesn't have a HD stat (presumably), nor does it have a spell level (the spell it is based on would be spell level 9, though), and how do you figure out a half save?

    0. It is cursed; there should be no beneficial effects; the word inimical should also provide an obvious clue.
    1. The addictive effect comes into play whenever victims refrain from or otherwise stop eating the candy; a nibble here and there isn't going to terminate as anything severe, persisting in consumption will. The Will save to avoid and associated spell are designed to reflect that. Also, remember that soul bind itself allows a Will save to resist.
    2. Being addictive does not preclude something from being life-threateningly hazardous; smoking, alcohol et al.
    3. The Save DC should read as the following; 1/2 HD + spell level; in this case, 9. The HD refers to the character's HD; as noted above, it is half of the HD of the character.

I feel horrible after reading the fruits. What sick bastard would eat a sentient being like that? "Hey, look at that cute girl, I bet she tastes delicious! Her description tells me it's healthy to eat her too!" I mean, come on! That's horrible!
I'm currently writing a story, titled "Zenith: Another World Saga."

    It's a fantasy/adventure story. Here's the summary:

When I opened my eyes, I was in a fantasy world. I quickly discovered that it functioned off of game-like rules (levels, EXP, skills, and so on). Taking the name Zenith, I decided to make the best of my new world and live as an adventurer aiming for the top together with my new best friend Rozenskye. And I might be functionally immortal? An Isekai-style story.

Tasty. A fruit is naturally tasty if eaten.
But only to humans. Only to humans.

What if a hobgoblin had tongue receptors that made fruit taste like dung?

It's why they're said to be technically omnivores but prefer meat, as if they were carnivores. In some settings, anyway.

Most probably wouldn't know that they can be eaten; unless of course they were already carnivourous, or were present when the Fruit decided to sacrifice itself for the betterment of all.
A Fruit is also probably not going to willingly submit to such an end; unless it personally felt that doing so would inspire more joy and victory than not. As the adage goes, no victory without sacrifice.
That the Fruit is Tasty probably amends the humanoid to such an act and soothes its conscience.

A walking, talking Fruit is probably not normal in itself

It may resolve itself as an aversion or even phobia, even though the hobgoblin may benefit from the restorative effect. If the hobgoblin finds the taste too disagreeable, it may spit it out and not benefit at all. The hobgoblin may also deign to kill Fruits any time they interact.
Although all this assumes that the Fruit would consent to sacrifice itself for the hobgoblin.

Confectionery That Renders The Self Unto Animal

    Pork Floss
This savory delectable is much sought after, to the point that even physical violence is threatened or enacted whenever their quantity runs low. Those who eat this candy do so as slobbering pigs, chomping mouthfuls at a time. Appearing as a hard lolly with pink and white stripes running horizontally down its body and surrounded by fuzzy reddish-pink floss, this confectionery forces a baleful polymorph effect upon the eater. Failure causes the victim to turn into a pig; that may supply bacon and pork to the community.

    Yellow Snow
This candy appears as crushed yellow ice within a buoyant liquid centre surrounded by a hard clear yellow shell. It presents with an extremely strong pleasing fragrance, but also smells faintly of vinegar and piss. Eating it causes all thoughts on this matter to dissolve in bursts of delicious awesome. Unfortunately, it bears with it a hideous, not to mention odorous, curse. Consuming it causes the victim to be targeted with a baleful polymorph effect; the result of which is a skunk.

Would this mean that the monster could spontaneously explode at any and every conceivable time; with the highly volatile eruptions becoming less and less extreme.
I'll take a stab at that, it could get interesting. Would it be golem or some other type of monster?

Please, please, please when using non-core material, cite to the books. There are too many books to wade through to find the one with the feat, special ability or spell you use.

That's a good question, Debby. I originally intended them to be the spiritual, as well as physical, incarnation of candy fruits. The whole thing snowballed into them being not only the embodiment of candy fruits but the actual fruits as well (as much as they are in this context).

Thoughts on changing them to Plant (Extraplanar)?

Thank you kindly, Octopus Jack, glad you liked them!

everything is tasty to dragons (in every sense of the word).
Well anything that tastes bad can be counteracted by overwhelming their taste receptors with short spurts of breath weapon and here and there. And then it becomes smoky flavored.

"Hey, look at that cute girl, I bet she tastes delicious! Her description tells me it's healthy to eat her too!"
I think you just wrote a new Robot Chicken sketch for Seth Green right there.

    "Hehehe!"
"Oh no, I've got a disease! You know what has to be done, adorable berry girl."
    "Uh oh spaghetti ohs!"
    *later*
"Was that really necessary? The cleric doesn't even have resurrection yet."
"The GM told me this was dark fantasy, Mike. Cute things have to die."
"But he was going to take restoration next level..."
    "I HAVE SPOKEN!"
