Illithid Blast?

So I have heard about Complete Psionic's notoriety for being so poorly edited, particularly in the case of Illithid Blast. What do you suppose it is actually meant to do? Here's the feat:

ILLITHID BLAST
You can convert your psionic energy into a mind blast.
Prerequisites: Illithid Heritage*, two other illithid feats,
manifester level 5th.
Benefit: Once per day as a standard action that requires
the expenditure of your psionic focus, you can channel
power points into a mind blast, which is a psi-like attack in a
15-foot cone. Anyone caught in the cone must succeed on a
Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 your HD + your Cha modifier) or be
stunned for 1d4 rounds.

Specifically, how do you think power points should effect the power?

It seems you get the choice:
1) expend focus
2) Spend 5 (well, I'd put it as 5) PP instead of focus.

Either way limited to 1/day.

I was looking over this a while back trying to figure it out, but just gave up. Really poorly done.

Illithid Blast is a feat, power points probably shouldn't enter into the equation at all. I think it should just read 1/day expend your psionic focus to use the blast. If it actually cost power points then it shouldn't be limited to 1/day.

Otherwise you'd be better off just learning the power psionic blast.

All things considered, you are anyway.

Even 1/day, just expending your focus, it's still filled with serious suck.

The feat is 1d4 (that makes usually better).

It also requires you to expend your psionic focus, is 1/day, an dis only 15ft cone instead of 30. And you can augment the power.

One could take psionic talent twice for 5 more power points and just use that to fuel an augmentation of psionic blast.

What if you are a Wilder (they only get 12 powers after all), Ardent, Psiwarrior who can't normally learn Psionic Blast? Then you'd need the feat to do so.

It's still a better bang for your buck than the heritage feats.

Oh my god, don't get me started on how bad Flayerspawn Psychic is. It would be pretty good if it had more ML progression, but HALF?!? And even the PrC doesn't explain the pp channeling line.

EDIT: it appears it actually gives 6/10. Not much of a difference though...
