Default Evolution of the Character landscape

We talk about optimization but after a conversation with my friends I noticed something... D&D is a living breathing world and with that, some character options will reign dominant over others while some others may become either endangered or extinct...

Before we hit the world of 4.0 What would the "heroes of 3.5" look like...

Melee has been dominated by TOB...
    Archers are extinct or endangered...
Casters are the dominant force on the planet...

I sense this thread has much potential

A Fighter/Paladin will just hack you to bits

A Wizard/Sorcerer will just blow you up with a spell

A Rogue/Ranger/Monk will just kill you in your sleep

A Cleric/Druid will just squash you after buffing himself

A Bard will slowly twist your ethics, corrupt your morals, and make you do vile acts just for the chance to face him. When you fight him, he will have your family and friends fighting for him. For he wields the deadliest weapon against you and that is, his word against yours.

I've been thinking about that actually.
How about make the arcane archer into something compatible with the ranger (advances animal companion and spell casting) and give rangers access to the druids spell list?
